Book Review: Breanna & Amber Help Each Other Achieve Their Dreams by Sabrina Depina Graham

Breanna & Amber Help Each Other Achieve Their Dreams by Sabrina Depina Graham

Parents usually want what they think is best for their children. Many adults see the world in purely financial terms. In this story two young girls have dreams that are different than what their parents have for them. As the story unfolds, different magical things happen to help with the pursuit of those dreams.

Breanna & Amber Help Each Other Achieve Their Dreams by Sabrina Depina Graham is a good inspirational story. It is well-written and could be a great inspiration for those kids who have heard adults tell them why their dreams won’t work.

We give Breanna & Amber all five stars. It is a good, uplifting story. Like the saying goes, “Those people who keep saying it can’t be done should get out of the way of the people who are actually doing it.

Guest Post: Do's & Don't of Online Safety: Are You Unintentionally Putting Your Child at Risk?

Do’s & Don’ts of Online Safety: Are You Unintentionally Putting Your Child At Risk?

We all want our kids to stay safe online but with new technology emerging daily, it can be a bit difficult to know when you may unintentionally be putting your child in harm’s way. The dangers of online predators are growing; according to the FBI, “online predators are everywhere online” (Kempf, 2012).
I’m going to let you in on a secret.  Here are some of the most common mistakes parents make online that put their kids at risk — and tips for how to avoid them.
Take a moment to learn from these mistakes, and discover some new tips about how you can proactively play a role in your kid’s internet safety.

Mistake #1: Posting Pictures of Your Child Online

This is one of the top mistakes parents make (and can be even more harmful if made in combination with other mistakes on the list). “Posting photos of your kids creates a digital footprint—a kind of electronic paper trail—that forms their identities in a world they haven’t chosen to enter” (Common Sense Media, n.d.). Even if your child is older and has already established an online identity, it could still pose a threat.

Mistake #2: Disclosing Identifying Information

Posting information about your child and yourself online can leave you vulnerable to identity theft. Ensure that you are careful what personal information you choose to disclose; “A thief could piece together what might appear to be random bits of disparate information and use it to impersonate your child” (Hardy, n.d.). Even using your child’s real name could create vulnerability, so it may be wise to think about choosing a nickname for your child to use online.

Mistake #3: Not Adjusting Privacy Settings

Many social media sites offer privacy settings for the primary reason of keeping their users safe. Check out your accounts to ensure that only people you know and trust can see the information you post to the web. Some platforms, such as Facebook, even allow you to create specific groups within your privacy settings. This expands your options on who can see what your posting.

Mistake #4: Leaving Location Settings On

Did you know that on some social media sites such as Instagram may be sharing your location with strangers as well when you share a post? “If you leave your location settings on, there’s a location tag and you can hit it and the majority of people add their photos at home so you can pretty much guess where they live” (Carty, 2015). Before making any more posts on social media, you may want to make sure you turn off your location first, which can usually be found under the account settings option of any platform you’re using.

Mistake #5: Expressing Feelings of Vulnerability Online

Experts agree online behaviors that give, “an appearance of vulnerability-sadness, loneliness or anger-could invite unwanted contact from strangers” (Hardy, n.d.). You may want to refrain from revealing too much personal information about your child and family’s emotional state online. Avoid the risk of your child being contacted by online predators by using personal family information.

Mistake #6: Choosing a Simple Password

To avoid hackers, try to keep your passwords as complex as possible by avoiding including personal information and complete words. “One of the most basic hacker tactics is known as a ‘dictionary attack,’ where an automated program will attempt the words of the dictionary” (Hardy, n.d.). Get creative with your password by combining multiple words as well as adding numbers and special characters. Keeping your passwords secure will keep your kids safe and keep strangers away from your account, which may contain photos and other personal information about your child that you have only chosen to share with a limited number of people.
With the right privacy settings and knowledge of online safety, it is possible to share photos and experiences of your children with family and friends. If you’re ever unsure about whether an online action may be unsafe, always err on the side of caution and don’t follow through.

Book Review: Unplowed Ground: Cultivating the soil of your challenging child’s heart by Lee Anne Cooper

Unplowed Ground: Cultivating the soil of your challenging child’s heart by Lee Anne Cooper

Unplowed Ground is meant to be a workbook to accompany a series of video lessons aimed to help foster and newly adoptive parents help challenged children.

The workbook is helpful in reinforcing the message from each video.

It is what it is. If you like the idea of having blanks to fill in to assist you in remembering the message, then this is a great tool.

However, if you hate the idea of simple fill-in-the-blanks and would rather have a fork driven through your hand than to have to deal with them, then this workbook isn’t for you.

Unplowed Ground is designed to be a tool to help the viewer remember the key takeaways from the video. It accomplishes that goal. If this is what you need, then buy the workbook.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this workbook. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Guest Post: 5 Reasons Why Seniors Should Volunteer at a Church Nursery

5 Reasons Why Seniors Should Volunteer at a Church Nursery

boy-20233_640

The sound of a child’s laugh delights many people, but did you know that it may also be good for your mental health? The average adult laughs just 15 times a day, while children laugh as many as 500 times in a 24-hour time frame. Science shows that laughter is contagious and can improve your physical and mental health, so spending time with happy children may benefit you. Aside from making each other chuckle, there are numerous other perks associated with volunteering in your church’s nursery. Here are five of our favorites.

Enjoy Time With Little Ones When Grandchildren Live Far Away

If your grandchildren don’t live in the area or a hectic schedule prevents you from seeing them as often as you’d like, you can bond with other children in the nursery. Obviously these children aren’t a replacement for your grandkids, but they can help you forget about the ache in your heart that you feel when your family isn’t around.

Get to Know Other Senior Citizens

Make new friends by volunteering in your church’s nursery. In addition to meeting young men and women, you may have the chance to connect with fellow seniors. Increase your chances of meeting older adults by volunteering during times when seniors frequent the church, such as early-morning yoga classes or midday Bible studies. If your church doesn’t offer childcare during these times, talk to the youth group leader or pastor. The church might be willing to open the nursery during the day if enough parents and volunteers are interested.

Remain Mobile

It’s no secret that aches and pains often plague the elderly, but that’s not an excuse to eliminate physical activity. Volunteering in a nursery helps you remain mobile, especially since you’ll probably end up chasing after energetic kiddos as they play.

It’s important to remain active as a senior. Seniors who are rarely mobile spend more time visiting medical professionals than active seniors, and they’re also more likely to need prescription drugs.

Just be careful not to overdo it while you’re playing with the kids. If you have a bad back, don’t offer to give piggyback rides. If your knees ache, be careful not to kneel on the floor for extended periods of time. Talk to your doctor about your volunteer work for specific recommendations.

Brighten the Lives of Children

Although many parents do the best they can to raise their kids, there are still children who feel unwanted or do not receive much attention from adults. Volunteering in a nursery with babies and toddlers can bring joy to your life, but it can also benefit the kids you work with.

You can strengthen or improve kids’ self-esteem by spending quality time with them at church. You can also act as a role model by showcasing appropriate behavior for little ones. If kids do not receive much attention at home, you can let them know they are loved by engaging in fun activities with them at church.

Improve Your Well-Being

Volunteering with children gives you a sense of purpose, which may help you feel healthier and happier (and less apt to turn to bad habits). Research shows a connection between volunteer work and a decreased rate of mortality. Simply put, you might live longer if you volunteer in your church’s nursery.

Spending time with children may require you to memorize songs and dances, and you might have to learn the rules for kid-friendly board games. It also requires creativity, as little ones may expect you to cook fake food in their play kitchen or pretend you’re a superhero. All of this can help keep you mentally active as you age.

Volunteering in a nursery is beneficial for children, but it can also have a positive impact on your life. Talk to a leader at your religious center to learn how you can make a difference in the lives of local children by committing to volunteer work.

Press Release: North Texas Minister Publishes Coloring Book for Grieving Children

North Texas Minister Publishes Coloring Book for Grieving Children

Rev. Penny Stemley presents gentle approach to understanding, overcoming traumatic life events

FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 18, 2017) – A North Texas-based Christian minister has created and published an inspirational coloring book for children that can help them to understand and overcome grief and loss. In “Butterfly Wings,” author Rev. Penny Stemley provides parents and professionals who work with kids with a gentle method for teaching young people about emotionally challenging concepts, such as death and traumatic life events.

Stemley published her book after being inspired by a young girl in her church congregation who was grieving the loss of a close family member. Based on a dream Stemley had several years prior, the book chronicles a queen’s doubt and despair after the death of her king and her ultimate healing through the power of faith and love.

“In our world, there is much destruction and devastation,” Stemley said. “As adults, it’s difficult enough to deal with grief and loss. But how do we even begin to explain the subsequent emotions to a child? My prayer is that this book will offer a sense of hope and joy to anyone who reads it and that, even in the midst of sorrow, it will bring children to a place of peace and comfort.”

With simple illustrations and easy-to-understand messaging, “Butterfly Wings” reaches out to all young people experiencing heartbreak or going through a traumatic life experience. The book presents readers with a creative and compassionate approach to processing hardships and progressively moving forward to a place of peace.

Book Review: Raising Children: Surprising Insights from Other Cultures by David F. Lancy

Raising Children: Surprising Insights from Other Cultures By David F. Lancy

The title is a little misleading.  One would think this is a book on how to raise your child.  The fact is, it is and it isn’t.

Raising Children: Surprising Insights from Other Cultures by David F. Lancy could be a good supplemental read for an anthropology class.

It could also be a helpful read for expectant parents or new parents.

Lancy compares and contrasts different cultures and their approach to child care. He does not give specific “how to” advice.  He merely tells us how things work in different cultures and allows his readers to draw their own conclusions.

We give it all five stars. We think that Raising Children is an excellent read.  The book is not overly simple and yet it is not a dry, academic read either.

Raising Children: Surprising Insights from Other Cultures by David F. Lancy would make an excellent gift for that budding anthropologist on your list AND intelligent new or expectant parents.

This would make an excellent companion read with A World of Babies: Imagined Childcare Guides for Eight Societies by Alma Gottlieb and Judy DeLoache.

Book Review: Mackenzie Goes Adventuring By J. L. Baumann

Mackenzie Goes Adventuring
By J. L. Baumann

This is a very delightful book about two young snookies who seek an adventure together.  Mackenzie Goes Adventuring by J. L. Baumann is a cute story that reminds children they should listen and do what they are told.

The book is very colorful and beautifully illustrated. The patter of the rhyme reminds one of Dr. Suess.  It has  the kind of feel to it of The Night Before Christmas.

We give Mackenzie Goes Adventuring all five stars.  We think kids will love the book and want you to read it to them again and again.

You will want to buy a copy of this for every child on your Christmas list.  It just may inspire a love of reading and adventure in your young charges.

Book Review: Growing Friendships: A Kids’ Guide to Making and Keeping Friends. by Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore and Christine McLaughlin

Growing Friendships: A Kids’ Guide to Making and Keeping Friends.
by Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore and Christine McLaughlin

If your child is having problems making friends, Growing Friendships: A Kids’ Guide to Making and Keeping Friends by Dr. Eileen Kennedy-Moore and Christine McLaughlin just might help.

It is a guide for helping kids learn some ways that just might help them make friends, when they are dealing with that awkward situation of being the odd man out.

The concept of the book is very creative.  The authors present different scenarios and guide the reader towards what they feel are the appropriate ways to handle the situation.  The book uses regular text along with cartoons to help hold the reader's interest as well as to underscore their points.

There is a cartoon dog and cat who make light-hearted commentaries throughout the book to make the book more interesting to kids.

We give Growing Friendships all five stars.  Whereas it might not work in every situation, the approach presented is probably the best way to attempt to make and keep friendships for older children and young teens.

We think this book would make an excellent gift for any older child/young teen.  Parents will find it helpful, too.  The book could be used to open a dialogue.

Although Growing Friendships does not have any scripture references, it may still be a good tool for churches to use in small group classes for their youth group.

This may very well be the best way for church youth groups to empower their kids out on the mission field, also known as school.

Purchase a copy for your youth pastor and one for your church library as well.

Guest Post: 3 Tips To Keep Your Child Safe From Those Pesky Mosquitoes

3 Tips To Keep Your Child Safe
From Those Pesky Mosquitoes

It’s likely that itchy bump on your child’s arm is nothing much to worry about. Most mosquito bites are harmless, and the symptoms will subside in a few days.

Still, if you’re a parent who pays attention to news about mosquito-borne illnesses, it’s hard not to be concerned. A year ago, the Zika virus dominated U.S. headlines. In 2014, it was Chikungunya Fever, and West Nile Fever before that.

“Nothing spreads faster across most of the world than a mosquito-borne virus,” says Dr. Brent W. Laartz, a board-certified infectious diseases specialist and author of How to Avoid Contagious Diseases (www.drlaartz.com).  “It seems we just become accustomed to diagnosing one virus when the next one is discovered.”

And though fears die down in the fall and winter, when mosquitoes disappear in most of the U.S., the threat never really goes away.

Predictions of a massive Zika outbreak in the U.S. were especially alarming because it is associated with a birth defect called microcephaly. There’s also concern because the virus can be transmitted through sex.

“All it takes is one person to return from the Caribbean or Asia with Zika virus in their bloodstream to infect a mosquito, which then will carry it to many others, especially in Southern states,” Laartz says.

The symptoms of Zika, Chikungunya, Dengue and a few other mosquito-borne viruses are similar, and can include muscle and joint pain, fever, headache, red eyes and a rash.  Zika symptoms usually clear up in less than a week, are mild, and rarely require hospitalization, according to www.healthychildren.org. And only 1 in 5 of those infected will have symptoms. But what parent wants to play the odds?

Here are Laartz’s tips for protecting children against mosquito bites and mosquito-borne illness:

  • Cover as much of your skin as possible. “All it takes is a small amount of skin exposure for a mosquito to land and start feeding,” Laartz says. If it’s too hot to cover up with long sleeves and long pants, apply an EPA-rated repellant to skin and clothes. The repellant should have DEET with a 25 percent concentration, he says.

  • Use sunscreen first, then repellant. If you can’t find a product with both sun and insect protection, use sunscreen first, let it dry and then apply the repellant, Laartz advises. (Sunscreens can inactivate repellants.) Keep the product away from your eyes and mouth, and take special care with small children. Do not use insect repellent on babies younger than 2 months old; cover your crib, stroller and baby carrier with mosquito netting.

  • Don’t count on treated wristbands and stickers for complete control. They should be coupled with repellant, Laartz says. And wear protection all day. “The mosquito that carries the Zika and Chikungunya viruses bites during the day and lives closer to human dwellings,” Laartz says. “It also bites multiple times and bites multiple people, so it can spread these viruses more rapidly.”

In March, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases entered the second phase of clinical trial  for a Zika vaccine. But it could take years before it’s declared effective and safe enough to be used in the U.S.

For now, Laartz says, mosquito avoidance is the mainstay of prevention.

Product Review: DVD Teletubbies: Bubbles

Teletubbies: Bubbles

We received a review copy of Teletubbies: Bubbles free of charge for the purpose of writing this review.

Teletubbies: Bubbles is a DVD which contains six all-new episodes of the Teletubbies.  This series appears to be targeted towards very young children like 2-5 years old or so.

Teletubbies: Bubbles is very cute and sweet.  In one of the episodes, there is a very funny part where a periscope speaker sounded to wake up the Teletubbies.  It was an imitation of a rooster.  This rooster had a British accent.

Teletubbies: Bubbles is the kind of DVD a parent or other caretaker can pop in to play while they take care of other things.  Every part of the DVD is kid-friendly.

Adults will probably not enjoy the DVD themselves because they are very repetitive and predictable. However, parents will want to play the Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes feature with their kids. It could be a very fun part of the DVD.

This is the first DVD in the series.  Parents, grandparents, and others will want to give their favorite child a copy of the Teletubbies: Bubbles DVD and let them have fun.

Just make sure you have some round bread and squeeze margarine in the house so you can make Tele-Toast. I am sure your young‘uns will request it.

We give it all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars.  Young children probably will, too.
