Press Release: New Atlas Traces Chickasaw History Through Maps

New Atlas Traces Chickasaw History Through Maps
Chickasaw ATLAS Cover

A new atlas from Chickasaw Press brings together a collection of more than 150 maps and images that trace the trajectory of the Chickasaw Nation from contact to the present day.

A Chickasaw Historical Atlas by Stanley Nelson, begins with a 1723 deerskin map presented to early American colonists by Chickasaw leader Fani' Minko', providing fascinating insight into the intricate geopolitical concepts of eighteenth-century Chickasaws. Throughout the text Nelson’s insightful commentary gives context to the maps, which range from the earliest non-native explorations of the North American continent to modern-day maps produced by the Chickasaw Nation’s GeoSpatial Information Department. A Chickasaw Historical Atlas clearly demonstrates a Chickasaw awareness of place and their sense of relationship with the land throughout their history.

“Maps, and even ones not crafted by Chickasaws, have been an important part of our people's history. ... Maps have revealed much about us in our lands, just as often as they have denied our presence or influence, undeniable as it was,” Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby writes in the atlas’s foreword.

Author:
Stanley Nelson is senior staff writer for Chickasaw Press and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. He joined the Chickasaw Press staff in 2010, after spending thirty years as a manager, editor, and columnist for newspapers and other media-related enterprises in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arkansas. He is the author of Toli: Chickasaw Stickball Then and Now, which was released by Chickasaw Press in 2016. His work has appeared in The Journal of Chickasaw History and Culture and Chokma: Chickasaw Magazine, and he has contributed text for a number of other Chickasaw Press titles. He studied journalism at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Nelson lives in Ada, Oklahoma.

Book Review: Eat This Mr. President: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in 4 Years by Marcos Jacober

Eat This Mr. President: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in 4 Years by Marcos Jacober

What would you be willing to pay to learn how to make millions of dollars? Would it be worth it to you to spend less than $20 to learn many of the secrets one man used to make millions? In his book Eat This Mr. President: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in 4 Years, Marcos Jacober reveals many of the strategies he used to make millions in real estate tax liens.

This book is a relaunch of his previous book The Secret to 24% Returns Guaranteed By Law!: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in Four Years.

Some may see this book as a glorified sales brochure that you pay for. It isn’t. Readers are provided with most of the information they need to get started investing in tax liens. There is also a free website which provides the reader with most of the rest that is needed to get started.

Any information this book does not provide must come from the individual county or tax district. The potential investor must do a little leg work that Mr. Jacober simply could not provide because it is determined on a county by county basis.

We give Eat This Mr. President: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in 4 Years by Marcos Jacober and the previous version, The Secret to 24% Returns Guaranteed By Law!: How a Brazilian Immigrant Went From Truck Driver to Millionaire in Four Years all five stars. It is entertaining and informative.

Book Review: Opening: Lotus Hawk's Prayers & Meditations: Guiding Prayers for Any Day by Harriette "Lotus Hawk" Mandeville

Opening: Lotus Hawk's Prayers & Meditations: Guiding Prayers for Any Day by Harriette "Lotus Hawk" Mandeville

One really could not consider Opening: Lotus Hawk's Prayers & Meditations: Guiding Prayers for Any Day by Harriette "Lotus Hawk" Mandeville Christian.

It really isn’t anti-Christian, either. I doubt that one could pin any label on this collection of prayers and meditations.

This very short book is meant to help one reflect on their thoughts and feelings.

We are Fundamental/Charismatic Christians. We judge any book that claims to be spiritual in nature using that as our starting point. But, we also judge books by the value received for the price paid.

All things considered, we really cannot give Openings a rating higher than three stars. Many of the 68 pages of this book are blank (10 pages or 14%) with the understanding the reader will make notes on those pages. Several of the other pages are mostly blank.

We really cannot recommend Openings at all. The theology is all over the place. It is very polytheistic in nature.

Book Review: Unveiling the Mystery of the Bride of Christ: The Restoration Truth of Who & What Is the Bride of Christ by Duke Levy

Unveiling the Mystery of the Bride of Christ: The Restoration Truth of Who & What Is the Bride of Christ by Duke Levy

Any time one has an alternative interpretation of the scriptures from what we were taught in Sunday School, we question the validity of that interpretation.

In Sunday School, we are taught that God changed Saul’s name to Paul. This never happened. Saul was his Hebrew name and Paul was the translation of Saul into the Gentile tongue.

This is why we read Unveiling the Mystery of the Bride of Christ: The Restoration Truth of Who & What Is the Bride of Christ by Duke Levy with an open mind.

We may not see eye-to-eye with Mr. Levy on the interpretation of the scriptures, but we can understand why he believes what he believes.

One instance of this difference would be Mr. Levy thinks we should continue to eat only foods that are clean according to the Old Testament. He may be right. However, our interpretation of Acts 11 leads us to believe that all foods are now clean. Would we be better to err on the side of caution?

Mr. Levy makes some very good points. We cannot judge whether he is right or wrong, theologically speaking. We know what we believe and can see why he believes what he believes.

Unveiling the Mystery of the Bride of Christ is very well-written and well-researched. Mr. Levy has spent years analyzing the scriptures to learn the truth, as he interprets it. We give this book all five stars.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Here are my responses:

A day without rain will be a good day for outdoor video making. But, that’s not happening here anytime soon, apparently.

The best time of day is the middle of the night. We are night owls here at McClendon Villa.

Public speaking is not my strong suit. As a matter of fact, even dressed as Xena Warrior Princess (and she was pretty strong!), I couldn’t do it!

It’s all fun and games until the litter box calls!

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!

Book Review: Competing With Giants: How One Family-Owned Company Took on the Multinationals and Won by Phương Uyên Trần and Jackie Horne

Competing With Giants: How One Family-Owned Company Took on the Multinationals and Won by Phương Uyên Trần and Jackie Horne

It is unusual to find a book like Competing With Giants: How One Family-Owned Company Took on the Multinationals and Won by Phương Uyên Trần and Jackie Horne. It works well as a casual reading experience about business. It also works well as a source of historical information.

In this book, readers learn a little about the history of Vietnam and the surrounding areas. Readers learn about the perceptions the Vietnamese people have of the United States of America and the rest of the world.

By now, you may be thinking that this book only works as a business book and a history book. It also gives readers an insight into how families can, and perhaps should, relate to one another.

This book works as a book to inspire small business owners as they seek to compete with larger companies. This book works also as a biography of the founder and founding family of one of the largest companies in Vietnam, as well as a biography of the author.

If you are in business and want to compete on a global level, you should read this book. It should help you understand a little better about how to think like the culture you are trying to market to.

We give Competing With Giants all five stars. We think it is written well and provides a wealth of information from the perspective of someone other than a Western business person. It would make a great textbook.

Book Review: Ninja Foodi: The Pressure Cooker that Crisps: Complete Cookbook for Beginners: Your Expert Guide to Pressure Cook, Air Fry, Dehydrate, and More by Kenzie Swanhart

Ninja Foodi: The Pressure Cooker that Crisps: Complete Cookbook for Beginners: Your Expert Guide to Pressure Cook, Air Fry, Dehydrate, and More by Kenzie Swanhart

Available September 25, 2018

We do not have a Ninja Foodi at McClendon Villa. When we were sent a review copy of Ninja Foodi: The Pressure Cooker that Crisps: Complete Cookbook for Beginners: Your Expert Guide to Pressure Cook, Air Fry, Dehydrate, and More by Kenzie Swanhart, we had to evaluate it based on the question, “Are these instructions easy enough for David, who has very limited skills in the kitchen, to follow?”

The answer to that question is a resounding, yes. These recipes are clear and easy to follow. They have enough detail to tell first-time users of the Ninja Foodi how to use it and what attachments to use to make each dish.

These easy to understand recipes list all the ingredients needed, prep time, different cook times and temperatures, detailed instructions along with serving information regarding serving size, calories, etc.

If we had a Ninja Foodi, we would take it into the kitchen of McClendon Villa and demonstrate. Perhaps we will get one soon.

We were sent a complimentary review copy of Ninja Foodi: The Pressure Cooker that Crisps from the publisher. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Review: The Siren Chronicles - Book 1 By Douglas J. Sloan

The Siren Chronicles - Book 1 By Douglas J. Sloan

Imagine being ordered away as you see someone devouring your parents. Or, walking along the beach and finding someone practically on death’s door, covered in seaweed. Or, waking up in a frat house with people staring at and pawing on you. Or, crying in a cave.

Imagine a whole lot more than that! The Siren Chronicles by Douglas J. Sloan offers a great deal of excitement as three mermaids embark on their earth quest. Each one faces challenges as they learn to maneuver themselves on land and deal with humans.

One of them gets the answer to something that has haunted her since childhood.

All three get a taste of evil that will take every ounce of their strength to defeat. Can they do it? They have to. Their underwater world depends on it.

I enjoyed The Siren Chronicles immensely. I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait to read Book 2!

The last time I went outside was yesterday (I’m writing this Thursday morning). It smelled like fall in South Carolina. It made me so happy, yet even more homesick. It was a wonderful smell memory moment.

Money isn’t everything. Not even close.

I am sure being short is a blessing in disguise. I can’t wait to meet the Costume Designer.

My favorite word is Thanksgiving! It is also my favorite food. And, one of my favorite memories.

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!

Book Review: Prancie’s Prayer by Ellen J. Pilch Illustrated by Nicolas Peruzzo

Prancie's Prayer by Ellen J. Pilch Illustrated by Nicolas Peruzzo

By now all of our readers know that we here at McClendon Villa are animal lovers. That is why we love Prancie's Prayer by Ellen J. Pilch, which was illustrated by Nicolas Peruzzo. It is such a wonderful story. It shows that animals are part of the Kingdom, too.

This story is Christian-based. It takes place around Christmas, so it would make a wonderful Christmas present, or early Christmas present, for your kids.

This very heartwarming story is extremely well-written and the illustrations are magnificent. We give it all five stars and a can of tuna. You are looking for a great gift for your young child. You could not do better than Prancie's Prayer.

Book Review: The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD

The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD

You would think a book written by a brain doctor that taught much about brain science would be terribly complex and hard to understand. You might also think it would be boring. Nothing could be further from the truth.

In the book The Aging Brain: Proven Steps to Prevent Dementia and Sharpen Your Mind by Timothy R. Jennings MD, we find an easy to understand book that explains in great detail what we can do to avoid brain problems in our young ones and also in us as we age.

Most often when you read a book that deals in health issues, you find that the author either takes the side of science only or of a natural cure and Christian stance. Jennings explains why and how both are right and gives scripture references to back himself up.

If you want to know what foods to avoid to protect your brain, it is in there. If you want to know what to eat, it is in there, too.

If your church has small group Bible study classes, it would do well to create a course around this book.

The Aging Brain is very well-written, easy to understand, and very educational. We give it all five stars and know that, once you read your copy, you will want rate it that high as well.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Review: Crude Blessings by T. M. "Roe" Patterson

Crude Blessings by T.M. "Roe" Patterson

In the book Crude Blessings by T.M. "Roe" Patterson, readers are treated to a fascinating look into the life of two true Texans. We challenge you to read it without shedding a single tear.

This book makes for great entertainment, but it also provides a look at some truly great business minds.

It can be exhilarating to be on the front lines of a startup business. There is a special excitement when failure is not an option. This book puts readers on the front line to see how honesty and integrity can overcome a world of obstacles.

This makes an absolutely wonderful book with tons of life lessons.

The sad part in all of this is that, according to several of the other books we have reviewed recently, such as The Aging Brain and Unsafe at Any Meal , Alzheimer’s disease, Autism, ADD/ADHD and other brain related problems can be avoided. It appears that there is anecdotal evidence to support the notion that high fructose corn syrup and mercury in our diets cause these brain conditions.

We give Crude Blessings all five stars. We simply cannot believe that this is this author’s first book. Very few could write this well and tell a story this fascinating the first time out of the chute.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

A Morning of Pondering

This is something that has been on my mind for quite some time now.  Many of us struggle with fear of failure, lack of self-confidence, and lack of self-worth due to being rejected or emotionally abused during our childhoods or even as adults. The old saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" is just that, a saying, because it is not true.

Words can and do hurt and they lock people in a box.

But we do not have to stay locked in that box. We can find a way out.

Person A has spent your entire life degrading and belittling you, telling you that you are worthless and will never amount to anything.

Person B sincerely loves you, tells you how wonderful you are, how you can do anything you set your heart and mind to. He or she believes in you, not just in words but in deed, deep down in his or her heart and soul, and does not shy away from telling and showing you so.

But, it is Person A whose words you take to heart. Their words have you locked in a cage, afraid to believe that anyone could possibly love you, holding you back from chasing the life you dream of. They keep you from going all in with your relationships, goals, and dreams.

Why do you listen to those that never cared about you, yet discard the love freely and fully offered to you by one who does?

You cannot and do not trust Person A, so why listen to them? If you cannot trust them, should their opinions matter to you and be controlling your life? That is all it is anyway, their opinion. Their negative thoughts of you are not based in fact or reality. The true root of their negative opinion of you is their own guilt, shame, insecurity, and jealousy. It is, in effect, their opinion of themselves being cast on you.

They are trying to force you to carry their baggage.  Why let their emotional baggage weigh you down and become yours?

It is not yours to carry.

Your worth was determined by Someone Who knew you even before you were conceived.  He loved you then and He loves you now.  Don't put the heartless words of a man or woman above the love of your Heavenly Father.

Whenever those old - or not so old - negative tapes start playing in your head, making you afraid to do what your heart craves for you to do, don't listen to them.  Remember Who gave you the passions, talents, and gifts that you have and go for it.

You CAN do this. You ARE of value. You ARE loved.

Shake off the dust of those that want to keep you down and grab the hand of the One - and the one - Who loves you and believes in you.

Don't look back.  Keep moving forward to the life you're dreaming of!

Creative Economy Entrepreneurs: From Startup to Success: How Startups in the Creative Industries are Transforming the Global Economy by Alice Loy and Tom Aageson

Usually I, David, zone out when I hear the word creative. It has been said that I don’t have an artistic bone in my body and that I have never had an original idea.

However, if I had zoned out when I was reading Creative Economy Entrepreneurs: From Startup to Success: How Startups in the Creative Industries are Transforming the Global Economy by Alice Loy and Tom Aageson, I would have missed a lot.

This book works well for creatives as well as for budding entrepreneurs of any genre. The book would be interesting to those into business history as well.

This book should be read by government officials around the world, no matter what level of government they are in.

We give Creative Economy Entrepreneurs all five stars. It surprised me that it was so interesting and so well-researched.

Book Review: Affiliate Marketing Passive Income: 2018 Business Model for First Time Internet Marketers.Amazon Associates Program & YouTube Affiliate Marketing. by Drew Ansel

Affiliate Marketing Passive Income: 2018 Business Model for First Time Internet Marketers.Amazon Associates Program & YouTube Affiliate Marketing. by Drew Ansel

Most of our readers have bought Kindle books and been very disappointed by what they received. The reason they are disappointed is the author wrote the book, not to be helpful to his readers, but to put money in his pocket.

Affiliate Marketing Passive Income: 2018 Business Model for First Time Internet Marketers. Amazon Associates Program & YouTube Affiliate Marketing. by Drew Ansel appears to be one of them.

The author tells his readers how to “cheat” when writing reviews and how to spam the SEO protocols on YouTube.

The author actually suggests that you can write reviews for products for your own blog without ever owning the product. He suggests you can copy the reviews of others and reword it and add a few words of your own.

Ansel suggests one lists the main keyword five times in the description box on YouTube. This practice is frowned upon by YouTube.

We rate Affiliate Marketing Passive Income two stars. The writing and editing is poor. However, there are actually a few tips that one can use to improve their blog reviews and YouTube review rankings.

Here are the fill-ins:
  1. Being _______________ is _____________________.
  2. If ___________________ were worth money, then I would be rich.
  3. I am proud of _________.
  4. If I could time travel, I would visit the year _________.

Here are my responses:

Being short is sometimes very frustrating. I feel like such a toddler having to ask people to reach things for me at the store. I haven't yet learned to whistle my way through it like the guys pictured above.

If sneezes were worth money, then I would be rich. If potty trips were, then I would be even richer!

I am proud of our children and their ability to overcome adversity. I am proud of David and how he fought his way back from three strokes. He refused to let the strokes win. We’ve gone two years now stroke-free!

If I could time travel, I would visit the years that my ancestors first crossed the ocean to get to this land that wasn’t yet America. I would ask them what made them choose to leave their home countries to journey to this Great Unknown.

Guess what, folks! Ellen's new book, Prancie's Prayer, is available now on Amazon. Check it out!

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!
