Press Release: New Atlas Traces Chickasaw History Through Maps

New Atlas Traces Chickasaw History Through Maps
Chickasaw ATLAS Cover

A new atlas from Chickasaw Press brings together a collection of more than 150 maps and images that trace the trajectory of the Chickasaw Nation from contact to the present day.

A Chickasaw Historical Atlas by Stanley Nelson, begins with a 1723 deerskin map presented to early American colonists by Chickasaw leader Fani' Minko', providing fascinating insight into the intricate geopolitical concepts of eighteenth-century Chickasaws. Throughout the text Nelson’s insightful commentary gives context to the maps, which range from the earliest non-native explorations of the North American continent to modern-day maps produced by the Chickasaw Nation’s GeoSpatial Information Department. A Chickasaw Historical Atlas clearly demonstrates a Chickasaw awareness of place and their sense of relationship with the land throughout their history.

“Maps, and even ones not crafted by Chickasaws, have been an important part of our people's history. ... Maps have revealed much about us in our lands, just as often as they have denied our presence or influence, undeniable as it was,” Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby writes in the atlas’s foreword.

Author:
Stanley Nelson is senior staff writer for Chickasaw Press and a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. He joined the Chickasaw Press staff in 2010, after spending thirty years as a manager, editor, and columnist for newspapers and other media-related enterprises in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arkansas. He is the author of Toli: Chickasaw Stickball Then and Now, which was released by Chickasaw Press in 2016. His work has appeared in The Journal of Chickasaw History and Culture and Chokma: Chickasaw Magazine, and he has contributed text for a number of other Chickasaw Press titles. He studied journalism at Rose State College in Midwest City, Oklahoma, and the University of Oklahoma in Norman. Nelson lives in Ada, Oklahoma.

"A Walk with Grace accomplished everything we set out to do. My goal was to make a faith friendly film with crossover appeal to mainstream audiences seeking good, quality, filmed family entertainment. Grace is a beautifully shot film with excellent production values which shows the majestic beauty that is the Heartland. We are lucky to have such an accomplished cast of experienced stars with huge audience appeal, along with the young new talent, to bring Nick's story to life. I look forward to sharing Grace with audiences," said Lance Paul.

"I'm blessed to make my debut as a feature film director on a family with faith film about the town where I grew up. It was supercharged with a strong cast of experienced actors like Stephen Baldwin, Jason London, David Lee Smith, Cindy Pickett and Joe Estevez, alongside rising talent that included Ashley Bratcher, Lance Paul, Yorke Fryer, Austin St John, Mishka Calderon and Ian Grey," said Kellis. "It was a true artistic collaboration in the heartland. Press Release: GFA Launches Disaster Relief Effort to Aid Victims of ‘Grave’ Kerala Flooding

GFA Launches Disaster Relief Effort to Aid Victims of ‘Grave’ Kerala Flooding

Helpers make ‘please pray’ appeal as emergency supplies are rushed to Indian state hit by worst flooding in almost a century

WILLS POINT, Texas  —  GFA (Gospel for Asia, www.gfa.org) has issued an urgent appeal for help in responding to some of the worst flooding in almost a century that has claimed several hundred lives and displaced nearly a quarter of a million people in southern India.

GFA-supported workers have already begun distributing emergency supplies to some of the victims of the torrential rain in Kerala state, which has disrupted transportation and communication. Official rescue and relief efforts are also getting underway in many places with government help.

Some people have had to be rescued from rooftops by helicopter and by boat, while buildings and bridges have been swept away. Thirteen of Kerala’s 14 districts have been affected in what chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has called an “extremely grave” crisis.

While GFA-supported workers are gathering dry ration kits containing food, clean water and other essentials like clothes, tarps and toiletries, they are still waiting to learn the full extent of their own losses from the flooding in the region, where they have been involved in a wide range of caring ministries for decades. So far, at least one church led by a GFA-supported pastor and several Bridge of Hope centers are known to have been damaged.

“I have never seen rain like this in my life,” said GFA founder, Dr. K.P. Yohannan. “No matter which way I look, it is like I am surrounded by an ocean of water. Many have escaped with only the clothes on their backs. To rebuild and restore what has been lost will take time. We are doing all we can to help those in immediate need, and we are asking people everywhere to stand with us through prayers and giving so that we can do more to bring comfort and care in the name of Jesus.”

In a special emergency appeal report posted at GFA’s website, video footage from GFA-supported workers in the area shows water surging up the side of buildings, and people lining up to be taken away by boat.

Standing in water that covers the main local highway, Dr. Daniel Johnson, leader of GFA-supported medical ministry, says, “We are helping. We are trying to do what we can, but do pray. There is a lot more help we need.”

Donations to support GFA’s disaster relief work in Kerala can be made at gfa.org/flood.

Press Release: MARK SCHULTZ RELEASES FOLLOW, AVAILABLE TODAY

MARK SCHULTZ RELEASES FOLLOW,
AVAILABLE TODAY

NASHVILLE, Tenn (August 17, 2018) – Follow, the latest release from beloved singer/songwriter Mark Schultz is available today. This is the first full project from the beloved artist in six years and it's evident that music fans have been waiting for this music. The release rapidly climbed the iTunes Christian & Gospel albums chart, spending the day in the Top 10 of releases.
Early praise of the project has begun, with Hallels.com saying "Mark Schultz is to contemporary Christian music (CCM) what Elton John and Billy Joel are to pop music.  Schultz has an effortless way of incorporating the piano into his pop-centric songs that the piano becomes a dueting "voice." As a result, you can always count on Schultz's brilliant arpeggios to bring out emotions and nuances often not communicated by the human voice. Over time, Schultz's songs have enjoyed an added layer of emotional richness not often present among his peers. In this regard, Schultz's music is indispensable within CCM."
The album features Schultz's brand new songs "Hope is Rising," "Time Goes So Fast," "Psalm 91" and others, as well as his timeless fan-favorites such as the worship anthems "God of Glory" and "I Am."
The powerful title track - “Follow” - parallels how Schultz navigates his life, not by his own will, but God’s. Originally inspired by a story Schultz heard about a girl with a rough upbringing and no father-figure, Schultz discovered “Follow” was farther reaching than he knew: “As I lived with the song, I thought, ‘This isn’t just for her; this is for me. What do I follow?’”
Follow is available at www.markschultzmusic.com, iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify and everywhere music is sold.

ABOUT MARK SCHULTZ:
Many artists talk about chasing their dreams, but for Christian recording artist Mark Schultz, it’s never been about the chase. Instead, he would rather follow, follow God’s call. Incidentally, this has led to what looks like any artist’s dream: two million records sold to date, ten No. 1 singles, a Dove Award as well as multiple nominations. If you’ve encountered Christian music in the last 18 years, when you hear the name Mark Schultz, you will probably begin humming your favorite Schultz hit. Mark and his wife Kate live just outside Nashville, TN with their three children - Ryan, Gus and Maia Mae.

Press Release: U.S. Army Soldier on Mission to Bring Dog Back with Him from Middle East

A Soldier and Dog. Image Source: Pixabay
U.S. Army Soldier on Mission to Bring Dog Back with Him from Middle East
One U.S. Army soldier is on a mission to save his dog and bring him home to Florida
New York, NY – (July 31, 2018) – While U.S. Army missions may be the stuff of top secret details, there is no hiding what is going on with the mission that one solder is on. Protecting his identity so that his security is not compromised, David is a U.S. Army soldier stationed in the Middle East who is on a mission to save a dog he befriended while being deployed. Not wanting to leave the dog behind after he leaves the Middle East, he reached out to Paws of War to see if they can help bring Rukban back to Florida with him. It’s a mission that Paws of War has helped numerous other soldiers with and that they have agreed to take on once again.
“Bringing a dog back from another part of the world like this is a true mission,” says Robert Misseri, co-founder of Paws of War. “There is a lot that is involved in doing it, including the paperwork, travel and medical expenses, and more. It’s a mission that we cannot succeed at without the assistance of people in the community who want to help support those who help defend the country.”
While it may seem like a true mission impossible to bring a dog back from the Middle East, Paws of War is well experienced at helping soldiers successfully pull it off. Being left in the Middle East when David’s unit is sent home would most likely be a death sentence. It’s an area of the world that sees dogs as pests and doesn’t treat them kindly as a result. When David found the dog he named Rukban, he was hungry, thirsty, and injured. He had a fresh neck wound and someone had previously cut his ears off, a common abuse toward dogs in that area.
Immediately going into action, David gave the dog food, water, and got it medical attention. He created a strong bond with Rukban as he nursed him back to health. Military protocol does not allow for soldiers to bring dogs back home with them, so David reached out to Paws of War for assistance.
“Rukban has been such a blessing to me while being in the Middle East,” says David. “I can’t imagine leaving him behind and what would become of him. Being able to bring him home to Florida with me would be amazing. I’m grateful that an organization like Paws of War exists to help with this mission, and I’m humbled that so many citizens give them the support they need to make it happen.”
Those who would like to a donation to help keep David and Rukban together, and help keep Rukban from being further abused, can log online to make a donation: https://pawsofwar.networkforgood.com/projects/56176-rukban.
Paws of War is an organization that focuses on serving veterans, law enforcement, and first responders. They are an all-volunteer organization that provides assistance to military members and their pets, and provides service and service dogs to veterans suffering from PTSD. To learn more about Paws of War or make a donation to support their efforts, visit their site at: www.pawsofwar.org.

Press Release: America’s Run for the Fallen Has Nearly Completed its Coast-to-Coast Run to Arlington

America’s Run for the Fallen Has Nearly Completed its Coast-to-Coast Run to Arlington
Runners Crossing North Carolina and Virginia on Way to Arlington

July 23, 2018

On July 23, runners honoring fallen American service members crossed the South Carolina-North Carolina border, marking the beginning of the last two states on their cross-country run to Arlington National Cemetery. America’s Run for the Fallen is organized by Honor and Remember, a veteran and Gold Star Family organization that seeks to individually recognize nearly 20,000 Fallen Service Members since the USS Cole (October 2000). Each mile along the 6,000-mile route from Fort Irwin, California to Arlington National Cemetery, runners pause for a short ceremony to remember by calling each name out loud of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guard and marines killed on a different day since the War on Terror began.

This year, “America’s Run for the Fallen” marks the ten-year-anniversary of the first Run for the Fallen. Never has there been a Fallen Military Tribute on this scale or magnitude. The event has grown both in the number of participants and, sadly, the number of service members honored. By the time the race finishes in August, Gold Star families, veterans, and other supporters from the community will have run 6,000 miles through 19 states on their journey from Fort Irwin, California to Arlington National Cemetery.

The 2018 “America’s Run for the Fallen” began on April 7th in Fort Irwin and has since covered over 4,800 miles. Runners will take nine days to cross North Carolina, entering the state on July 23 near the coast. They will be in North Carolina from July 23 through July 31, passing through Wilmington, Fayetteville, and Jacksonville with a day of rest near Washington, NC. You can view their full schedule here.

On August 1, runners will cross the North Carolina-Virginia border near Norfolk, VA, entering the final stretch of their 6,000-mile run. They will spend five days crossing Virginia on their way north through Norfolk and Newport News before arriving in Arlington on August 5. You can view the full route through Virginia here or the last day of their run here.

Press Release: Save the Persecuted Christians Coalition Disheartened at Continued Imprisonment of Pastor Andrew Brunson

Save the Persecuted Christians Coalition Disheartened at Continued Imprisonment of Pastor Andrew Brunson
Brunson Has Been Imprisoned Since October 2016; Trial Continues

WASHINGTON—Along with Christians and other faith-based groups, the Save the Persecuted Christians (STPC) Coalition is expressing dismay today at the continued imprisonment of North Carolina pastor Andrew Brunson, who has been detained since the fall of 2016 on accusations of spying or aiding terror groups.

At his hearing in Turkey today, a court ruled that Brunson will be detained at least until his next hearing Oct. 12. Many have been working tow ard Brunson’s release, such as individual believers, groups like STPC Coalition, the Trump administration and the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ). More than 584,000 signed an ACLJ petition on Brunson’s behalf.

“With the news of his continued imprisonment breaking today, Save The Persecuted Christians calls on President Trump, the administration and our legislators to step it up and do everything in their power to bring home American pastor Andrew Brunson jailed in Turkey as a political pawn on false charges of conspiracy,” said Dede Laugesen, member of the STPC Coalition.

Earlier this month, a Turkish newspaper reported that Brunson may be released at today’s hearing because of the national and international attention Brunson’s case had received, according to CBN News. But Brunson’s trial now continues, HotAir.com reported, urging the White House to mobilize further for his release. Brunson was arrested by the Turkish government in October 2017 and faced up to 35 years in jail on charges of espionage and terrorism.

The Washington Post also reported today: “Brunson’s supporters and independent analysts have called the accusations baseless and say he is being used as a bargaining chip by Turkey to win concessions from the United States.”

The STPC Coalition, which advocates on behalf of 215 million Christians facing heavy persecution worldwide, was also part of a protest organized last month in Washington, D.C. The Coalition continues to work diligently to disseminate actionable information about ways in which the American people can help those like Pastor Brunson who are being persecuted for their faith. Americans can lend support by encouraging their pastors and faith leaders to visit www.SaveThePersecutedChristians.org and order a free banner to display in front of their houses of worship.

These simple banners feature the Arabic “nun” character, which has become an international symbol for the oppression of Christians ever since the Islamic State used this first letter of the Arabic word for “Nazarene” to designate homes of followers of Christ targeted for persecution.

Raising awareness is an important first step, especially as Christian persecution occurs so routinely it rarely makes headlines. For example, according to Open Doors, 255 Christians are killed worldwide every month. 104 Christians are abducted. 180 Christian women are raped, sexually assaulted or forced into marriage. 160 Christians are detained or imprisoned without trial. And 66 churches are attacked. Every month.

The STPC Coalition is a building movement, similar to one in the 1970s that helped free another population suffering from heavy persecution—Soviet Jews—so as to impel policy changes that will hold the persecutors accountable and increase the costs for their crimes against humanity. Building such a movement is necessary to provide American policymakers the leverage needed to influence change worldwide and to alleviate the suffering of those—like Pastor Brunson—who are being persecuted merely because of their faith in Jesus Christ.

Press Release: From Destruction to Creation

3lech lecha (2)

From Destruction to Creation

After tragic fire, renowned Israeli painter Yoram Raanan’s art book brings Torah to life

Art of Revelation, the forthcoming book by Israeli contemporary artist Yoram Raanan, brings the entire annual cycle of Judaism’s weekly Torah portions to life through an unprecedented array of paintings—emerging from the artist’s personal story of redemption and uncompromising faith.

Less than 15 months after his art studio and about 2,000 of his pieces were destroyed in a fire as Israel was hit by a nationwide wave of blazes, Raanan’s new book showcases his 160 exquisite original paintings on the 54 Torah portions, accompanied by explanations that help readers see layers in the art that may not initially meet the eye.

The weekly Torah portion—a section of the Bible that is chanted by a designated reader in synagogues around the world on the Sabbath, as well as studied privately or in public lectures—is the de facto drumbeat of the Jewish faith. Ranging from the stories of the biblical patriarchs and matriarchs, to the Exodus from Egypt, to the 613 commandments, any given week’s portion (also known as a parshah) reminds Jews—and by extension, all of Western civilization—of both their millennia-old roots and their practical daily concerns.

Art of Revelation engages the mind while being a digestible book that will capture the hearts and imaginations of experts and novices who appreciate fine art. Raanan’s paintings reflect the inner dimension of the events, people, laws, and stories of the Torah, speaking in metaphors that slip into viewers’ minds and touch them in a visceral way.

“In the biblical account of creation, we hear repeatedly the words, ‘God said, Let there be...and there was...and God saw that it was good’…God saw and wanted us to see the goodness and beauty of the world,” writes Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, former chief rabbi of the U.K., in a letter of support for Yoram Raanan. “[Yoram] helps us ‘see that it is good,’ showing us the light of holiness and the beauty of being.”

Raanan was commissioned to provide, over a three-year span, a new painting on the subject of each week’s Torah portion. But disaster struck in November 2016, when the fire at his studio in the Judean hills destroyed 40 years of his work.

“My first words to my wife and a few others still trapped inside the village were, ‘well, there goes the studio,’” the artists recalls. “As we were able to evacuate and drive through the still spreading fire in the smoky night air, I realized that this was surely the work of God, and that only good would come from this—even though included in this disaster were all the 160 parshah paintings of the previous three years.”

The result of his strikingly optimistic attitude is the new book, which Raanan calls “the actualization of my desire to share this collection with the world.” This sharing would not have been possible without the foresight of the painter, who before the fire had scanned digital copies of all of his pieces on the Torah portions.

The artist praises the work of his wife and co-author Meira Raanan, who spent “years researching and writing about the biblical understanding and artistic nuances that these visual representations convey. In the year since the fire she has put her results into final form, and now they are here to share with you.” Meira, a teacher of religion and meditation, is working on another book, The Lights of Fire, on the subject of the blessings that have emerged from the fire that destroyed Yoram’s studio and artworks.

“Few artists in the Jewish world today better capture the beauty of holiness, of service of God, and of Judaism as a faith than Yoram Raanan,” writes Rabbi Sacks. “His paintings have inspired me for many years, and I have been moved by the way he has rebuilt after the tragedy of losing his life’s work in the arson attacks that engulfed the Judean Hills outside Jerusalem in November 2016. I am delighted to see Yoram’s work showcased in this way.”

About the author-artist

Yoram Raanan  is one of Israel’s most well-known contemporary artists. After graduating in 1975 from Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, he traveled and studied throughout Europe and the Near East. He moved to Israel in 1977 and opened his first studio in Jerusalem. Inspired by Israel’s beauty, heritage, and people, Raanan’s art has brought him international acclaim. His paintings are on display in museums, galleries, and collections worldwide. His work often reflects the Bible, nature, and the land of Israel.

Meira Raanan has been teaching and writing about meditation, religion and art for many years. Her interest in the Biblical narrative began with a degree in Jewish studies at McGill University (Montreal) and developed into the study of Chassidut and Kabbala. She is currently working on a new book, The Lights of Fire about the fire that burned down her husband’s studio and a lifetime of art work, and the blessings that have emerged from that disaster.

Press Release: One Company Gives Back to Injured Veterans, Helping them Every Step of the Way

One Company Gives Back to Injured Veterans, Helping them Every Step of the Way

With the iWALK2.0, injured veterans are able to have better mobility

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – (June 18, 2018) – According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are 18.5 million veterans in the country. Like the rest of the population, they experience lower leg injuries, resulting from any number of issues. One company has created a way to help them every step of the way, making it more comfortable for them to have better mobility as they recover. The iWALKFree company gives back to veterans, by giving those with lower leg injuries the iWALK2.0.

“We are extremely grateful for everything veterans have done for our country,” explains Brad Hunter, the innovator of iWALK2.0 and the chief executive officer of the company, iWALKFree, Inc.  “Being able to give back and help them even a little is the least that we can do. We are happy to know that our device helps make their injury recovery a lot more tolerable.”

The iWALK2.0 has been designed to help with all types of common lower leg injuries, as well as those with amputations. To provide veterans with the iWALK2.0, the company has teamed up with the Travis Mills Foundation. The foundation was created by Retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills, who is a wounded warrior, having lost of his arms and legs during combat. He became an advocate for veterans and amputees, starting the foundation to help with those efforts. During 2017, they helped 84 veteran families with being able to attend a healing retreat that included such as activities as yoga, archery, boating, fishing, hiking, painting, culinary arts, and much more.

One of the wounded veterans helped by the iWALK2.0 is Leslie Smith, a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in Bosnia in 2001-2002. Her rigorous training required her to wear combat boots that lead to a blood clot. The condition led to an amputation of her left leg. Though she was fitted for a prosthetic leg, what many people don’t realize is that wearing them for any length of time can lead to severe skin irritation and extreme pain at the knee and upper thigh. Typically amputees give up their prosthetics from time to time so that these side effects can heal.  And many military vets who have lost their legs have given up on prosthetics altogether due to these side effects. The iWALK2.0 helps her through those healing periods.

"The iWalk allows me to be and feel like a whole person,” explains Leslie Smith. ““The iWalk gives me freedom, confidence, and independence. I do not have to rely on a wheelchair or crutches. Having the ability to use my hands freely is of great importance especially being legally blind and having a service dog. The iWalk has removed any and all stress or worry that I will not be able to continue daily activities, work, travel, and anything fun, like shopping. I have no fear of missing out on what I need to do!”

With the iWALK2.0, Smith no longer has to hop, crawl, use a wheelchair or crutches, in order to get around when she was taking a break from her prosthetic to heal. This helps to avoid injuries, bruising, falls, and soreness.  Plus, it’s empowered her life because she can get around with ease and feel safe doing so.

The program that iWALKFree has in place to give back to those in need provides people with the opportunity to donate their used iWALK2.0 to a variety of charities. Along with the Travis Mills Foundation, they provide devices to the Adaptive Training Foundation, Canada Africa Community Health Alliance, Serving Us Veterans in Need, Globus Relief, Hands of Hope, Physicians for Peace, Limbs for Life, World Rehabilitation Fund, Marshall-Legacy Institute, and Volunteers for Inter-American Development Assistance.

In addition to giving back to veterans to help with their injury recovery, the company also provides help to other charities where they provide free iWALK2.0 units to those in need who do not have the means to otherwise pay for them. The device retails for $149, but their mission with that charity is to help those in need have access to a more comfortable way to recover from injury that will also help them be more mobile.

The product does provide benefits to those veterans who used it, because the iWALK2.0 offered them easier mobility while they were recovering from an injury. Rather than them spending their time recovering from a lower leg injury using crutches, which can be painful and limit mobility, they were able to get around easier and with less pain.

The iWALK2.0 is hands-free, pain-free alternative to using crutches and leg scooters.  It’s easy to learn to use, intuitive, and safe. From the knee up, the leg is doing the same walking motion that comes naturally to it. The device is essentially a temporary lower leg, which gives people their independence and mobility back as they recover from an injury. The device is pain-free, and makes it possible for people to engage in many of their normal routine activities, such as walking the dog, grocery shopping, and walking up or down stairs.

Clinical research, the results of which are on the company website, shows that patients using the iWALK2.0 heal faster, and have a higher sense of satisfaction and a higher rate of compliance. The iWALK2.0 sells for $149 and is available online and through select retailers. Some insurance companies may cover the cost of the device. The device can be used with a cast or boot, and comes with a limited warranty. For more information on the iWALK2.0, visit the site at: http://iwalk-free.com.
