Book Review: There's No Right Way to Do the Wrong Thing by Dr. Christopher Gilbert

There's No Right Way to Do the Wrong Thing by Dr. Christopher Gilbert

We’ve all heard that there is never a right time to do the wrong thing and there is never a wrong time to do the right thing. There's No Right Way to Do the Wrong Thing by Dr. Christopher Gilbert takes this idea and expounds on it.

While reading this book, my mind got stuck on the problem he introduced about his company that was basically put out of business by an unethical competitor. What kept going through my head was, why?

The original company was already entrenched in its market and the competitor entered another market. Cravings had the experience that money can’t buy. This company would have grown organically rather than with an infusion of cash. But, coulda shoulda woulda.

Other than that ethical situation, my mind was able to wrap itself around the different concepts of ethics as introduced by the book.

This reminds me of a finance company that I once worked for. They kept repeating in most of the company literature, “Not just the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law”. I think that told us that they intended to do what was right, no matter what.

In the world of ethics, Jerry Clower said it well, “If you can’t get down on your knees and thank God for being able to do whatever it is you are intending to do,, you ought not be doing it."

There's No Right Way to Do the Wrong Thing is very well-written and very well-researched. We give it all five stars. Your company may wish to add this to the required reading for management.

We think you will enjoy this book.

Book Review: Eat Cake. Be Brave. By Melissa Radke

Eat Cake. Be Brave. By Melissa Radke

Eat Cake. Be Brave. by Melissa Radke is totally hilarious. The author has a sense of humor that just won’t quit. She made me laugh, REALLY laugh.

It is also incredibly sad. I don’t mean just a little sad, but deep down in your soul sad. The kind that brings up tears that have been buried for so long you thought they’d gone. But, you know they haven’t because they are now soaking everything in sight.

I can relate to the life Melissa has lived in so many ways. Like, questioning Heavenly Father on why He’d give us a talent or desire, but put obstacles in our way that prevent us from fully realizing that talent or desire. Or, answering our prayers, and then taking our heart’s desire from us. I’ve been there, on both counts. It hurts.

People don’t make this life any easier, with their judgements of us. They judge us on something so shallow as our looks, not seeing that true beauty is what lies within us. They think we are unworthy to use our God-given talents because we aren’t one of the “beautiful people”.

Melissa is done playing that game. She tries to instill in us that it doesn’t matter what people say about us or how they judge us. Their thoughts about us don’t matter. What matters is what Heavenly Father thinks. He made us in His image and loves us, regardless of our physical attributes or lack thereof.

In the midst of all the laughter and the tears, Melissa’s message is clear: He doesn’t make junk. Don’t let other people control how you feel about yourself. He can use you in His kingdom. Live the life He gave you to live loud and proud, giving glory to Him.

And, most definitely, eat the cake! Don’t be afraid to be YOU!

Book Review: Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor

Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor

From time to time, we get a book that is just screaming, “Me next, me next.” Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor was one of those books. There are over 53,000 books in our to be read file, each with the hope that it will receive a review.

It is difficult to believe that this book is the first book out of the chute for this author. Taylor is a master storyteller who tells the story very well.

It does not matter that there are times this old Southern white male needed a hood-to-redneck dictionary. We speak the same language, Christian.

The author writes in such a way that you can feel the pain. You can feel the betrayal. Readers follow as one person after another in the main character’s life hurts her in one way or another.

Then, we read in this true story of how the main character overcame all odds. How she pulled herself up by the bootstraps she did not have and overcame.

We think Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt would make a good book for a small group Bible Study. The author makes no excuses for her character and she admits to mistakes along the way.

We give this book all five stars. It is one of those books you won’t want to put down. One that you want to think everything is rosey in the end, but it is about real life. You will want to buy a copy for all those independent black women in your life and maybe a copy for that redneck man, too.

We were sent a complimentary copy of Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: God Inside the Fire: Revised & Expanded Edition by Greg Stelley

God Inside the Fire: Revised & Expanded Edition by Greg Stelley

We read and reviewed the original version of God Inside the Fire and we were blown away. Usually when there is a revised edition, it really does not improve the story that much. However, God Inside the Fire: Revised & Expanded Edition by Greg Stelley takes a truly awesome story and kicks it up several notches.

The miracles in the first edition were great. Stelley hit it out of the park with this revised edition as he added some dialogue that really makes the true life characters come to life for the reader. He also adds some back story to help us get the true impact of what was going on in the story.

We feel that this book is very well-written and deserves all five stars. It is a factual account of a real life event told as close to the facts as can be told.

Our Kindle ereader tells us it takes about six hours to read the book. This being the case, you might want to potty first, put on a cup of coffee, and grab a comfy place to sit because you won’t want to put down God Inside the Fire.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: How To Be A GREAT Salesperson...By Monday Morning!: If You Want to Increase Your Sales Read This Book. It is That Simple by David R Cook

How To Be A GREAT Salesperson...By Monday Morning!: If You Want to Increase Your Sales Read This Book. It is That Simple by David R Cook

We have read countless books on selling. Some of these books were by salespeople recognized the world over as the top salesperson in their field. We have never heard of David R. Cook, until now.

In How To Be A GREAT Salesperson...By Monday Morning! Cook provides several of the key ingredients to becoming a top salesperson. The book is easy to read and a very fast read.

We are concerned that it does not contain “The Secret Sauce” of selling. Obviously, Cook knows what he is doing. According to Cook, he has been the number one salesperson in every sales organization he has been in.

There are two things that a salesperson must do in order to have more sales. The first one, Mr. Cook alludes to when he says practice, practice, practice. That key ingredient is get out and see the people.

We have been privileged to observe three of the most successful salespeople in their particular organizations and the one thing that all of them do, and we are sure Mr. Cook does as well, is build rapport.

The three greatest salespeople we have seen, one from NCR, one from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and the third from a Fortune 500 company that is in the death industry, is that they never mentioned their product or that they were selling until the potential customer did.

Up to that point, the salesperson was talking about the customer and HIS business or HIS family. Never once was the product even mentioned. We are sure if Mr. Cook analyzed his selling style, he would see that he spends most of his time talking about everything but the product.

We give How To Be A GREAT Salesperson...By Monday Morning! all five stars. We think it is very well-written and would be an excellent tool in any salesperson’s toolbox. Grab two copies today. One copy to keep at home on your nightstand and one to keep with you at all other times. Read it and re-read it until the pages fall out. Then, buy more copies. Your sales WILL increase if you use the tools Mr. Cook has given you. But, you must actually use them.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Review: Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life's Greatest Challenges 2nd Edition by Steven Southwick and Dennis Charney

Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life's Greatest Challenges 2nd Edition by Steven Southwick and Dennis Charney

By now most of our readers are well aware that we have read and reviewed many books on psychology. Perhaps one could say we are amateur psychologists.

We were sent an advanced reading copy of Resilience: The Science of Mastering Life's Greatest Challenges 2nd Edition by Steven Southwick and Dennis Charney (Available 3 May 2018) to review and we have to say we found it to be very interesting.

This book is a fairly easy read like many pop psych books, but it is loaded with information like a psychology textbook. It is kind of the best of both worlds.

Resilience is very well-referenced. The book references scores of peer-reviewed articles, as well as books and interviews. We give it all five stars.

If you are interested in why some people break during or after a traumatic event and others don’t, you may find Resilience to be insightful. We think this would make a great resource for psychology classes that deal in PTSD and other conditions.

We were sent a complimentary Advanced Reading Copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Review: Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal

Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal

We read and review many books on business on our blogs. We also read and review books on genealogy and family history. Without even trying, Give to Get: A Senior Leader's Guide to Navigating Corporate Life by Vishal Agarwal brings the two together, in a roundabout way. With family history and genealogy, most people want to know about the dashes in a family. You probably know that the dash is how people lived their lives between their birth and death dates, the how and why they lived their lives the way they did.

Give to Get talks about something Zig Ziglar talked about many times over the years: How you can get anything you want in life IF you just help enough other people get what they want.

This book is a quick read, but it takes on several issues that are important to anyone in the C-suite, as well as that new branch manager of the local company.

Without coming out and saying it, Agarwal reminds us that it isn’t the people at the top who run the company. Most of the time, it is the people on the front line who run the company. Tapping into their strengths and getting to know what makes them tick is the key to a successful company.

Give to Get is very well-written and easy to read. We give it all five stars. We think this will make an excellent addition to any leader’s library.

Book Review: The Mayflower: The Families, the Voyage, and the Founding of America by Rebecca Fraser

The Mayflower: The Families, the Voyage, and the Founding of America by Rebecca Fraser

We love history. We love to study genealogy. The Mayflower: The Families, the Voyage, and the Founding of America by Rebecca Fraser is chock full of both.

We learned so much about history that we never even knew existed from this book. Not only did we learn about early America, we also learned about England, the Netherlands, and a little about Scotland as well.

The Mayflower is very well-written and extremely well-researched. We give it all five stars. This is one of those history books you just don’t want to put down because, not only is it interesting history, it is very readable. We learned more at every turn of the page.

Book Review: The Race of Your Life: How To Reach Retirement With Cash In The Bank And Fuel In The Tank by Darryl Rosen

The Race of Your Life: How To Reach Retirement With Cash In The Bank And Fuel In The Tank by Darryl Rosen

If you are looking for a detailed manual of how to invest in the stock market, this ain’t it. However, if you are looking for some good, down home advice about how to plan your retirement, The Race of Your Life: How To Reach Retirement With Cash In The Bank And Fuel In The Tank by Darryl Rosen is the right book for you.

We have reviewed investment books that compared investing to baseball, golf, basketball, and other sports but, this is the first to compare planning for retirement to running a marathon. This analogy works very well.

The Race Of Your Life is very well-written and easy to understand. Heck, even this ol’ redneck understood it and I get out of breath walking from my recliner to the supper table. We give it all five stars.

If you have no idea about how to invest, you may want to start with some more instructive books such as Master Your Cash Flow by Al Zdeneck, Jr. or The Financial Briefing by Eric Hutchinson. However, if you need a good common-sense guide to planning for retirement, The Race Of Your Life works very nicely.

Book Review: The Iron Fist: The Immigrant Journey of J. B. Leonis to Riches and Power in Southern California by Richard Nordin

The Iron Fist: The Immigrant Journey of J. B. Leonis to Riches and Power in Southern California by Richard Nordin

If you are interested in uncommon history, you won’t be disappointed with The Iron Fist: The Immigrant Journey of J. B. Leonis to Riches and Power in Southern California.

As you may know by now, we here at McClendon Villa are very much into genealogy and family history. We were not disappointed by The Iron Fist even though, to the best of our knowledge, we are not related to anyone in the book.

The book takes us through the life of one man and how it changed due to a request from his uncle, whom he barely knew. It is the story of sort of a wild west and progress.

The Iron Fist is very interesting and entertaining. It is well-written and well-researched. We give it all five stars. If you want to learn a little about the early days of the city of Los Angeles, silent film stars, the longest bar in the world, or a city that did not want anyone to live there, you’ve got to read The Iron Fist.

Book Review: Confessions of a Bone Woman: Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World By Lucinda Bakken White

Confessions of a Bone Woman: Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World By Lucinda Bakken White

Confessions of a Bone Woman: Realizing Authentic Wildness in a Civilized World was an interesting book as well as inspiring. At first, it struck me as a bit weird, but the more I read, the more I could relate to Mrs. White.

We all have a person that we are meant to be. Sometimes we are allowed to fully grow into that person. Other times, we are forced to swallow who we are in order to please those around us. This has been the case for Mrs. White, for myself, and for countless others.

Confessions of a Bone Woman is the memoir of Lucinda Bakken White’s journey back to who she was meant to be. Some parts may seem a bit weird or “out there”, but some parts I understand completely. She thrives on nature and connects with it on a deeply spiritual level.

If you enjoy reading about others’ journeys to find themselves, you will not be disappointed with Confessions of a Bone Woman. We give it 5 stars.

Blog reader warning: There are mentions of things not in keeping with Christianity in this book. Some parts feel somewhat pagan in nature.

Book Review: Mentalligence: A New Psychology of Thinking--Learn What It Takes to be More Agile, Mindful, and Connected in Today's World by Kristen Lee

Mentalligence: A New Psychology of Thinking--Learn What It Takes to be More Agile, Mindful, and Connected in Today's World by Kristen Lee

If Mentalligence had stopped at page 150, it would have rated all five stars. Up to that point, we were thinking that the book expressed all that is wrong with the world of psychology and all the other sciences that deal with how we act and interact with others around us.

However, when the author takes us into Part 3, we are hit with a completely different feeling. It is almost as if there were two different authors writing the book.

In part 3, the author begins to speak with a different tone and seems to have a very liberal agenda. We understand that the author questions the religion she was brought up on, most academics do. However, she seems bent to speak out on all religions and most philosophies that don’t fit into the mold she has set in her studies of Mentalligence.

After a while, she does seem to climb down off her anti-religion soap box and get back to science. However, she does revisit this from time-to-time, just in case we readers missed it.

Overall, we give Mentalligence three stars. The book would have done great without the philosophical attack on just about every belief system out there. The author is entitled to her opinion. However, like many college professors out there, she doesn’t seem to be satisfied with simply stating her disregard of religion. The feel is that the author speaks tolerance of every mindset out there provided it doesn’t involve religion, straight, or pro-life thought. The reader is left to ask, “Is there really something wrong with me because I believe in a supernatural Being, am attracted to the opposite sex, and/or am pro-life?

The world we live in now seems to preach tolerance for everything and everyone provided they think as we do and act as we do. The author has a problem with that when it was preached to her as a youth, but does not seem to realize she is doing the same thing, only in the opposite direction.

Book Review: My Cells Made Me Do It by Robin R. Hayes

My Cells Made Me Do It by Robin R. Hayes

This is not the type of book we normally read. If we were looking on Amazon, we would smirk and think, “cute title” but that is as far as that would go. However, we were sent a copy of My Cells Made Me Do It to review and it fell within our normal guidelines, so we read it. We have to say this is one of the most interesting and fascinating books we have reviewed in a while.

This isn’t the kind of book one just plows through. One must stop and think about what the author means and the implications of what he is saying. It is a different world.

The book is extremely entertaining, if one could ever call a book on cellular biology entertaining. It touches on just about every field in the sciences one could imagine. It does so in a very intriguing way.

My Cells Made Me Do It is not some long-haired book that only academics can enjoy. It is a book for us poor, dumb, rednecks who are still fascinated by trying to figure out if the light really does go off in the refrigerator when we close the door.

If you are a science major, this book may very well help you to understand better what you are studying. If you are the kind of person whose only interaction with a science book recently was to use one to squish a spider, you will love it, too. By the way, it does work well for squishing spiders, too. We tried that out.

We give My Cells Made Me Do It all five stars. We enjoyed it immensely. You will, too.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

Book Review: Fighting for Our Lives: My Battle With Cancer to Save My Baby and Myself By Heather Choate

Fighting for Our Lives: My Battle With Cancer to Save My Baby and Myself
By Heather Choate

Fighting for Our Lives: My Battle With Cancer to Save My Baby and Myself by Heather Choate is probably the most emotional book that I have read all year. It is an awesome testimony of the determination of a mother and the power of faith.

Life throws some very upsetting punches in Heather’s direction. Imagine being told that you have breast cancer at age 29...while you’re 10 weeks pregnant, with your 6th child. Any one of these things can be overwhelming, but to have them all on you at one time - and thrive - takes one strong, determined woman, a devoted husband and family, and faith in a loving Heavenly Father. Heather is, and has, all of those.

Fighting for Our Lives brought me to tears on more than one occasion. There are smiles and even a giggle or two along the way. Though I have not been diagnosed with breast cancer, I could relate to Heather’s feelings on many occasions. It is an emotional story, but she has a positive attitude and her faith is evident throughout the book.

This book is written like one would write in a diary or journal. Some days are skipped along the way. Some days just have a line or two. Other days, Heather pours out her heart in words that engage your heart, leaving you wanting to reach through the pages and give her a hug, as you both bawl your eyes out.

Fighting for Our Lives is an inspiring story of faith and hope.  It is a story of being scared, but doing it anyway, because not doing it would mean the end of the story.

This book earns all 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone going through a tremendous test of faith, even if it isn’t cancer. You may cry an awful lot as you read it, but you won’t be sorry that you did. You may just find a revival of your own faith within the pages of Heather’s story.

Book Review: Superconsumers: A Simple, Speedy, and Sustainable Path to Superior Growth By Eddie Yoon

Superconsumers: A Simple, Speedy, and Sustainable Path to Superior Growth
By Eddie Yoon

If you are interested in a different approach to growing your brand, Superconsumers: A Simple, Speedy, and Sustainable Path to Superior Growth by Eddie Yoon may just be the tool you need.

Yoon gives his readers some real world examples of how trends can be leveraged to optimize sales.

We have had different experiences in the adult beverage industry that lead us to doubt some of the data Yoon cites in Superconsumers. While working at two different convenience stores in Texas, we discovered that the average beer consumer in those stores spent on average of $20 per day on beer every day of the year.  Maybe some Texan out there isn’t drinking his fair share.

Other than that observation, it appears that Superconsumers is spot on. It is well-written and well-researched.  If one is in leadership in a business and is looking to grow that business then, Superconsumers would be a helpful resource for them.

We give it all five stars.  We enjoyed the book and think it could be a valuable tool for someone trying to grow a business.

Book Review: Thrive By Design: The Neuroscience That Drives High-Performance Cultures By Don Rheem

Thrive By Design: The Neuroscience That Drives High-Performance Cultures
By Don Rheem

There are many “so called” management books out there that speak to the idea of management as a science.  Many fall short of that and instead reveal another “management du jour” plan.

Thrive By Design: The Neuroscience That Drives High-Performance Cultures by Don Rheem is not like that. Instead, Rheem discusses why different approaches to management work and why others don’t.

Rheem gives examples of how management should work and why it will work that way.

I promise you there is none of that pass out pins, put up posters, hold hands, ropes course kind of management in Thrive By Design.  This is a well-written book about how things work in the real world of management.

Book Review: Acts of Kindness: 101 Ways to Make Our World a Better Place By Rhonda Sciortino

Acts of Kindness: 101 Ways to Make Our World a Better Place
By Rhonda Sciortino

Acts of Kindness: 101 Ways to Make Our World a Better Place is a little book with big ideas that anyone can do to share a bit of kindness with others.

Most of the ideas are easily implemented. Some ideas, though, I think may not have the result that is expected. It really depends on the mindset of the person on the other side of the intended act of kindness.

Some older people struggling to load or unload their groceries do NOT want a young whippersnapper offering to help them. It makes the older person feel like people think they can’t do anything for themselves. This is one that can go either way. Some folks would dearly love an offer of assistance and so often do not get one.

Another suggestion in Acts of Kindness would be a very bad idea if you’re dealing with a very shy person. Some people do nice things and don’t want to make a big show of it. This author suggests publicly praising them for what they did. In my opinion, this is one of the worst things you can do to those of us that would not like being put on display.  You have to know the personality of the person you’re dealing with on something like this or it may be counterproductive.

There are many great suggestions and several that I had never even thought about, but hope to put into practice very soon.

Acts of Kindness: 101 Ways to Make Our World a Better Place earns all five stars. It is a short book with great ideas for the long run. I think that you will enjoy it, too.

Book Review: A Bridge Named Susan by Sharon Chase Hoseley

A Bridge Named Susan
By Sharon Chase Hoseley

Wow! I really don’t know what to say about such a wonderful book! A Bridge Named Susan is about the life of the author’s mother, who was named Susan.

Susan started out life with things against her, namely her own mother. She was a girl. They had a farm and farms needed boys, not girls, at least in Minnie’s opinion. Susan’s daddy, John, loved his little girl very much.

This book takes us from Susan’s early childhood through adulthood. Along the way, she faced many challenges and much heartache. There were some extremely tense and terrifying moments that got my heart racing as I read them.

Susan found strength in faith in our Heavenly Father and daily turned the struggles of her life over to Him. Things happened along the way to make her question her faith and if He had forsaken her, but in the end, her faith was rewarded.

A Bridge Named Susan earns all five stars. It was a book that was hard to put down. I had to see how it ended!

Warning: Parts of this book may be a trigger for those who have suffered emotional or sexual abuse.
