Here are my responses:

Oh wow, there have been too many for me to be able to choose an absolute best. But, since I have to choose one, I will choose Mrs. Anna Dean Pennington. She was my 11th grade US History teacher. She put something on the board the first day of class and told us to remember it, that it would be on the exam. I did, and it was, and I still remember it to this day. What she wrote on the board was 1588. Its significance was the defeat of the Spanish Armada. She said if we’re ever confused and wondering who won that situation, to think about what language we were speaking. We were speaking English (well, okay, a Southern version of it!) and so that meant England won. I’m beginning to think that this is the one thing that I will remember for life.

The worst teacher I ever had...again, there have been so many. Ordinarily, I would say my first grade teacher Miss Cromer. You can read about her here. However, I will go to my high school years and choose Mr. Gosnell. He was a creep. He would humiliate me in front of classmates in a way far worse than Miss Cromer did. She was just trying to maintain control of her classroom. He, however, was bent on being a pervert. He would pull a chair up to my desk and sit there staring at me, blowing kissy faces at me, and totally killing me inside. This got to me on so many levels. I was painfully shy and introverted. The attention his actions brought to me was unbearable. Then, there’s the matter of a grown man making advances toward a 16 year old girl. I felt violated. Had I told my daddy, he would have killed him. I often think that I should have told my daddy. But, Mama always said never to do anything that would get my hot-tempered daddy in trouble, so I kept it to myself. I don’t think I ever even told her.

I recently learned how to build a stand for top down/from above photography and videography. It is how we record our cooking videos because I’m too bashful and self-conscious to show my face on camera.

I think everyone should know how to read and write. Being able to read opens up so many opportunities. If one can read, they can go anywhere. Books can help us to (mentally) travel to places we have no reason to ever expect to be able to go AND teach us how to do what we need to do to make it a possibility and not just a dream. The ability to read gives us the world!

Trapped in My Mind: Rescue Me by L.P. MD.


The very short book Trapped in My Mind: Rescue Me by L.P. MD. tells a very sad story about someone who is obviously having a rough time in their life, who from the story she tells, has been dealing with mental illness for a long time.

She describes a part of her mind as being on a carousel. It really appears that this is an accurate description based upon the story she tells and about how she self-reported neglecting to eat or drink for days and not getting much sleep.

Reading Trapped In My Mind might very well help others to see the red flags that are displayed by someone they love. It is clear in reading the book that the author is still fighting this battle. We pray she is better soon.

Unsafe at Any Meal: What the FDA Does Not Want You to Know About the Foods You Eat by Dr. Renee Joy Dufault

Back in 1965, a very good year by the way, Ralph Nadar published his book, Unsafe At Any Speed. Nadar was attempting to warn the American public about the dangers of the automobile and particularly the Chevrolet Corvair.

In the book Unsafe at Any Meal: What the FDA Does Not Want You to Know About the Foods You Eat by Dr. Renee Joy Dufault, the author is seeking to inform her readers about the dangers lurking in our food.

The author makes a very compelling case regarding the Standard American Diet (SAD) and how it can lead to autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD), and Alzheimer's disease. It even appears that it may be possible to reverse some of the effects of those conditions by changing our diet.

One would think that a book like this would be a very dry read, but it isn’t. This book is well-written and not too academic for most readers. When she does speak in scientific terms, she explains those terms in a simple form that even a redneck could understand and get the point.

Dr. Dufault tells her readers what they can do to live a healthier life. She explains how even a person on a very limited budget may be able to eat healthier. Wouldn’t it be great if she and her associates were to write a cookbook that provides healthy recipes on an extremely low budget?

We give Unsafe at Any Meal all five stars on our scale of zero to five stars. We think it is an important book. This book is well-written and easy to understand, even though it does take on a fairly complex subject.

This book should be made required reading for all high school students. A few hundred congressmen should also read this book.

Here are my responses:

Reading my Bible and learning what I am meant to do, how I am meant to live, brings out the best in me.

People hurting or otherwise bothering my children makes me grumpier than Grumpy Cat. Someone getting between me and my children, literally or figuratively, makes me even grumpier than that.

If money grew on trees, I would happily live in a forest. Of course, I would happily live in a forest anyway. I grew up in the woods and that is the setting that makes me happiest...Well, the woods and old cemeteries. But I wouldn’t want to live in a cemetery. :)

I have a fear of being abandoned and unloved. This has a basis in my childhood and has been a battle my entire life.

Announcement: September Challenge 2018

3 Juicing Recipes To Shake Off Pounds And Boost Your Energy

Getting motivated to lose weight isn’t a problem for some people.  

Staying motivated is often another story. When a diet doesn’t produce results right away, studies show people usually don’t stick with it. Setting the bar too high, too soon can lead to frustration and a fast exit of a regimen that might have in the long run reached the person’s goals.

“The best way to stick to a diet is to start with reasonable goals,” says Cherie Calbom, author of The Juice Lady’s Sipping Skinny (www.juiceladycherie.com) and a leading authority on juicing for health and detoxification. “And the best diets are those that don’t just lead to success in losing weight but also gain you health with the nutrients they provide.

“Good diets are as much about committing to change your internal landscape as they are about changing your outward appearance.”

Juicing, Calbom says, should replace one or two meals a day, not all of them. And one way to ensure someone sticks with a juicing diet, she adds, is to research a variety of recipes “to avoid getting stuck in a recipe rut, as people do when bouncing from diet to diet.”

With that in mind, Calbom offers three juicing recipes to add variety to the diet:  

Apple Cider Vinegar Fat Blaster
1 qt. purified water
2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar (raw)
2 tbsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
Dash of cayenne pepper
Several drops of stevia to taste

Mix all ingredients together. Drink a glass 20 minutes before a meal.  

Cinnamon Swirl
2 cups full-fat coconut milk
1 cup chopped apple
½ cup packed baby spinach
1 tsp. Ground cinnamon, or ½ tsp. Liquid cinnamon
Several drops of stevia
4-6 ice cubes
Add protein powder

Put all the ingredients in a blender and process until creamy.  

Rockin’ Green Smoothie
1 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk
1 cup frozen berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)
1 cup baby spinach
1 cup chopped kale or chard
½ tsp. pure vanilla extract
4-6 ice cubes

Combine all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth and creamy.

Cali, Orange County, CA

 

Cali is a 2 year old female Shepherd mix we rescued from the meat trade in China. She was literally rescued from the slaughterhouse, hours perhaps moments before she would have been killed for someone’s next meal. Cali is extremely shy and it takes her a lot of time to warm up to someone new. She has not learnt to trust humans yet, but she is making slow steady progress in learning to trust people again. Cali would thrive in a home with another dog that likes to play, but also cuddle. She loves other dogs and loves playing with them. Her story is heartbreaking, but we have hope she will one day be confident enough to approach people re-assured they won’t hurt her ever again.

Tater, San Diego, CA

 

Tater is a 5 LB, 11/2 year old male chihuahua we rescued from a very high kill shelter. Because the shelter staff and doctors believed he had something terrible medically wrong with him, they felt he could not be treated and were going to put him down. When we rescued Tater, we took him to many vet appointments and learnt that what he had wasn’t life treating at all! Tater has a thyroid condition and takes medication daily to regulate his thyroid, but he is expected to live a normal, healthy life! Tater is so tiny that he can fit into your purse, your boot, or just in your arms…right where he likes to be! Tater loves other dogs and helps his foster mom out at her doggie grooming salon! You might even see him dashing around with a brush in his mouth; Tater wants to help! …sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts!

Irish, New Mexico

 

Irish is an approximately 9 year old male beagle we rescued from an animal shelter in New Mexico. He was dumped at the shelter by a laboratory in Albuquerque after they had finished using him in testing. Sadly, he was returned to the shelter once for not being immediately housebroken and left outside for 6 months before he was surrendered back. Irish is loving freedom — he loves people and gets along well with other dogs! He is very lovable and super cuddly! Just look at that smile!

Lulu, Murrieta, CA

 

Sweet Lulu is a 10 year old female beagle we rescued from a laboratory in China. We brought her to the U.S. to find her forever home! This special little girl is blind, but it doesn’t stop her from getting around and being your shadow! Lulu loves people and she loves other dogs. She is very docile and gentle. Lulu would thrive in a home with someone who has a flexible schedule, works from home, or is retired. She loves spending time outdoors!

Petunia, Los Angeles, CA

 

Petunia is a 4 year old female Staffordshire Terrier we rescued as a stray. She was tied up in direct sun to a pole with no name tag and no collar. Petunia is extremely friendly to people, but she prefers to be the only Queen in her kingdom. Petunia would thrive in a home with an adult couple or in a single family home. Petunia loves playing with toys. She has a lot of energy and wants to run around outside. This love bug wants all your attention to herself! She shows her love for you by licking you and nestling in your arms!

The Future is Smart: How Your Company Can Capitalize on the Internet of Things--and Win in a Connected Economy by W. David Stephenson

This is one of those cases that we did not know what we did not know. In the book The Future is Smart: How Your Company Can Capitalize on the Internet of Things--and Win in a Connected Economy by W. David Stephenson, the author tells his readers some pretty amazing things.

Who knew that we needed wireless dumpsters? We would have to say that this book has truly been an eye-opener.

Stephenson does a great job at explaining this new technology so that even a big ol’ redneck can comprehend it.

The Future is Smart is very well-written and engaging. We give it all five stars. This book is something that anyone in business should read for new ideas. It is also of interest to the average person. Many of the examples listed are products we use every day and readers will recognize them.

Learn from Failure: The Key to Successful Decision Making by Robert V. Sicina

The book title Learn from Failure: The Key to Successful Decision Making by Robert V. Sicina promises a lot, but doesn’t really deliver on that promise.

I, David, believe that Sicina lost me on page 56 when he suggested that Henry Ford’s statement that customers could have any color they wanted, as long as it was black caused the birth of General Motors. Alfred P. Sloan discusses, in great detail, this occurrence in his book My Years With General Motors.

Ford’s statement was in response to what General Motors was doing in regards to making their vehicles available in a variety of colors. It was NOT the reason General Motors was born; they had been around a long time at that point.

If the author could not be accurate with something I know, how could I be sure he was correct in his analysis of the other companies?

In my opinion this book could have been better with a few more examples of businesses that failed and why, and less on the academic mumbo jumbo.

We give Learn from Failure three stars and that is being generous. It simply is not the kind of book that draws the reader into it. We devour business books ravenously, but this one was a sleeper.

 GFA Launches Disaster Relief Effort to Aid Victims of ‘Grave’ Kerala Flooding 

Helpers make ‘please pray’ appeal as emergency supplies are rushed to Indian state hit by worst flooding in almost a century

 

WILLS POINT, Texas  —  GFA (Gospel for Asia, www.gfa.org) has issued an urgent appeal for help in responding to some of the worst flooding in almost a century that has claimed several hundred lives and displaced nearly a quarter of a million people in southern India.

GFA-supported workers have already begun distributing emergency supplies to some of the victims of the torrential rain in Kerala state, which has disrupted transportation and communication. Official rescue and relief efforts are also getting underway in many places with government help.

Some people have had to be rescued from rooftops by helicopter and by boat, while buildings and bridges have been swept away. Thirteen of Kerala’s 14 districts have been affected in what chief minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has called an “extremely grave” crisis.

While GFA-supported workers are gathering dry ration kits containing food, clean water and other essentials like clothes, tarps and toiletries, they are still waiting to learn the full extent of their own losses from the flooding in the region, where they have been involved in a wide range of caring ministries for decades. So far, at least one church led by a GFA-supported pastor and several Bridge of Hope centers are known to have been damaged.

“I have never seen rain like this in my life,” said GFA founder, Dr. K.P. Yohannan. “No matter which way I look, it is like I am surrounded by an ocean of water. Many have escaped with only the clothes on their backs. To rebuild and restore what has been lost will take time. We are doing all we can to help those in immediate need, and we are asking people everywhere to stand with us through prayers and giving so that we can do more to bring comfort and care in the name of Jesus.”

In a special emergency appeal report posted at GFA’s website, video footage from GFA-supported workers in the area shows water surging up the side of buildings, and people lining up to be taken away by boat.

Standing in water that covers the main local highway, Dr. Daniel Johnson, leader of GFA-supported medical ministry, says, “We are helping. We are trying to do what we can, but do pray. There is a lot more help we need.”

Many artists talk about chasing their dreams, but for Christian recording artist Mark Schultz, it’s never been about the chase. Instead, he would rather follow, follow God’s call. Incidentally, this has led to what looks like any artist’s dream: two million records sold to date, ten No. 1 singles, a Dove Award as well as multiple nominations. If you’ve encountered Christian music in the last 18 years, when you hear the name Mark Schultz, you will probably begin humming your favorite Schultz hit. Mark and his wife Kate live just outside Nashville, TN with their three children - Ryan, Gus and Maia Mae.

The Journey to WOW: The Path to Outstanding Customer Experience and Loyalty by Shaun Belding

By now, most of our blog followers know we read a lot of business related books. Out of the many, many books on customer service, I (David) would have to say that The Journey to WOW: The Path to Outstanding Customer Experience and Loyalty by Shaun Belding is by far the best.

One of the strongest points Belding makes is that outstanding customer service is a moving target. Back in the 1960s, a store would be considered to be outstanding if they had convenient parking and a clean restroom. Those things are now expectations and not an example of outstanding customer service.

Belding takes his readers on a delightful journey (imagine an old redneck using terms like “Delightful”) with a young man who is tasked with improving his company’s customer experience.

This book reads a little like Who Moved My Cheese. By this we mean that there is a story that, at first glance, is just a cute little story but, after a while, the reader learns that they actually learned something.

We give The Journey to WOW: The Path to Outstanding Customer Experience and Loyalty all five stars. We wish some online booksellers would read the part where the team discusses how their customers contact them.
