Press Release: Rescue + Freedom Project

Rescue + Freedom Project

August 26 is National Dog Day. Please visit the Rescue + Freedom Project to read about the great things these folks are doing to help dogs! The following dogs are currently available for adoption.

Cali, Orange County, CA

Cali

Cali is a 2 year old female Shepherd mix we rescued from the meat trade in China. She was literally rescued from the slaughterhouse, hours perhaps moments before she would have been killed for someone’s next meal. Cali is extremely shy and it takes her a lot of time to warm up to someone new. She has not learnt to trust humans yet, but she is making slow steady progress in learning to trust people again. Cali would thrive in a home with another dog that likes to play, but also cuddle. She loves other dogs and loves playing with them. Her story is heartbreaking, but we have hope she will one day be confident enough to approach people re-assured they won’t hurt her ever again.

Tater, San Diego, CA

Tater_2

Tater is a 5 LB, 11/2 year old male chihuahua we rescued from a very high kill shelter. Because the shelter staff and doctors believed he had something terrible medically wrong with him, they felt he could not be treated and were going to put him down. When we rescued Tater, we took him to many vet appointments and learnt that what he had wasn’t life treating at all! Tater has a thyroid condition and takes medication daily to regulate his thyroid, but he is expected to live a normal, healthy life! Tater is so tiny that he can fit into your purse, your boot, or just in your arms…right where he likes to be! Tater loves other dogs and helps his foster mom out at her doggie grooming salon! You might even see him dashing around with a brush in his mouth; Tater wants to help! …sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in our hearts!

Irish, New Mexico

Irish_2

Irish is an approximately 9 year old male beagle we rescued from an animal shelter in New Mexico. He was dumped at the shelter by a laboratory in Albuquerque after they had finished using him in testing. Sadly, he was returned to the shelter once for not being immediately housebroken and left outside for 6 months before he was surrendered back. Irish is loving freedom — he loves people and gets along well with other dogs! He is very lovable and super cuddly! Just look at that smile!

Lulu, Murrieta, CA

Lulu

Sweet Lulu is a 10 year old female beagle we rescued from a laboratory in China. We brought her to the U.S. to find her forever home! This special little girl is blind, but it doesn’t stop her from getting around and being your shadow! Lulu loves people and she loves other dogs. She is very docile and gentle. Lulu would thrive in a home with someone who has a flexible schedule, works from home, or is retired. She loves spending time outdoors!

Petunia, Los Angeles, CA

Petunia

Petunia is a 4 year old female Staffordshire Terrier we rescued as a stray. She was tied up in direct sun to a pole with no name tag and no collar. Petunia is extremely friendly to people, but she prefers to be the only Queen in her kingdom. Petunia would thrive in a home with an adult couple or in a single family home. Petunia loves playing with toys. She has a lot of energy and wants to run around outside. This love bug wants all your attention to herself! She shows her love for you by licking you and nestling in your arms!

Book Review: Momentus: Small Acts, Big Change by Hannah Alper

Momentus: Small Acts, Big Change by Hannah Alper

Momentus: Small Acts, Big Change by Hannah Alper is a book meant to let young people know that they can make a difference in this world. Age does not define you nor does it restrict one’s ability to make a difference in someone’s life. Kindness always makes a difference!

This book, written by a young teenager, is full of the stories of young people out there doing what they can to make this world a better place overall and to bring a smile to someone’s heart. The young people all face different challenges - there are people out there that think kids can’t do anything of importance - but they tough their way through the challenges before them to bring about the changes they are seeking.

In the Bible, John 15:12, we are commanded by Jesus to love one another: “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.” The young people represented in Momentus are doing their part to “love one another” and making the world a better place. They are making a difference.

If you need inspiration, can’t think of what you can do to make a difference to even just one person, pick up a copy of Momentus. You will find plenty of ideas. Sometimes all it takes is a smile to make someone’s day. No matter your age, you can do this!

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

National Cat Day

National Cat Day

To celebrate National Cat Day (August 8) Evite is lending a paw to one of LA's most notable homeless kitten nonprofit charities, Kitty Bungalow.

To raise awareness and funds for animal shelters and animal adoption, Evite has created an original video series called The Meowllennials. This comedic and heartwarming video series imagines a world of millennial kittens who dine on acai bowls while drinking rosé and doing yoga. The series travels through some of the most popular Millennial get-togethers while featuring some downright adorable kittens who are all available for adoption.

The first episode of the series is going live TODAY. Check out the series teaser here.

This is a fun, timely and heartwarming story that highlights an important local charity. Kitty Bungalow is the only 100% feral cat socialization facility in Southern California. They’ve also had a pretty rough year (a local contractor stole thousands from them and their charity mascot passed away during a routine procedure).

Kitty Bungalow is one of the many local and national charities Evite users can contribute to using the Evite Donations feature powered by Pledgeling. The Evite Donations tool has garnered over $3 million in charitable contributions since its launch in September 2015.

While Evite’s mission is to bring people together, they also recognize the special bond that a person has when they adopt an animal.  Pets of any kind really allow us to share incredible memories and experiences from one another.

Guest Post: Saving Mila

Hi, folks!  The following is a guest post from Mila's mom, Julia, from Mila's Miracle Foundation.  Please share and reblog this very important cause to all of your friends and followers. Thank you!

Saving Mila

There’s no other way to put it—my 6-year-old daughter, Mila, is dying. I lie by her side every night when she sleeps and my heart bleeds. My face burns from the tears. There are no words to describe being told that you will lose your child to a horrible genetic condition - Batten Disease. How could my daughter, the one who was running around, singing songs and laughing with her friends until just a year or so ago, be losing her abilities and soon her life? Mila has now lost her vision, needs help walking and can barely communicate what she's thinking. But her light is still bright and her laughter and smiles remind us every day that she's still strong - our little fighter.

We didn't accept what the doctor's told us - that there was no hope. We worked day and night to put together a team of scientists, raise $800,000 to start funding them and get a gene therapy trial on the calendar for next year. Others trials like ours have stopped and even reversed symptoms in children with similar diseases. We want to give this second chance at life to Mila and kids facing her devastating diagnosis!

There is a path to a cure for Mila and we're funding it! However, if we don't raise an additional $1M by the end of September for the trial, everything stops. Please consider GIVING whatever you can and SHARING our GoFundMe campaign with your network - www.gofundme.com/savingmila.

YOU can help save Mila and the other children like her!

With gratitude + determination,
Julia - Mila's Mom
President + Founder - Mila's Miracle Foundation

Congress vs Unicorns

Congress vs Unicorns

Today, the House will vote on a bipartisan provision included in the 2018 Interior budget which will seek to change historic language forbidding the slaughter of healthy and adoptable mustangs' and authorizing their slaughter. This is the biggest threat America's wild horses have faced in 20+ years, and if passed, private oil and meat companies will profit by utilizing the land and selling American horse meat in China and Russia.

Save America's Unicorns, is helping bring awareness to this issue through creative means, breaking through the noise by re-imagining these wild horses as unicorns -- because, if this bill passes, America's wild horses will be slaughtered to extinction levels, making them about as mythical as unicorns.

How you can help protect the wild horses:

  1. Visit www.saveamericasunicorns.com and watch the 90-second video.

  1. Call the Capitol Hill switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your legislators. Then say: "Hi, I am ___________ and I will not accept the killing of our nation's wild horses. Please continue to support the ban on horse slaughter and oppose any provisions that allow the bureau of land management to kill wild horses or sell them to someone who will.

  1. Share the GIF attached here on social media with a link to the site and the hashtag #SaveAmericasUnicorns

Pet Food Bank - Cause4pawsaz.org - Phoenix, Az: Many seniors and veterans share their only meal of the day with their pets. If not for Cause4Paws Pet Food Bank many would be surrendered to 'kill' shelters or go hungry.
