Here are the fill-ins:
  1. My favorite font is___________________.
  2. October is perfect for _______________.
  3. Where I live, _________.
  4. I feel very _________ this time of year.

Here are my responses:

There are many fonts that I like. My favorite depends on the use I have for it. I typically compose my blog posts using Courier New at 14pt. I don’t know what Blogger and WordPress do to it after I hand it over to them.

October is perfect for all things orange and black, pumpkins, bats, kitties, and all sorts of spooky stuff.

Where I live, being safe is apparently a luxury, not a right.

I feel very sneezy this time of year. About twice a year I have major seasonal allergy attacks. This is one of those times. I have been sneezing almost non-stop for at least a week now.

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!

Here are my responses:

A day without rain will be a good day for outdoor video making. But, that’s not happening here anytime soon, apparently.

The best time of day is the middle of the night. We are night owls here at McClendon Villa.

Public speaking is not my strong suit. As a matter of fact, even dressed as Xena Warrior Princess (and she was pretty strong!), I couldn’t do it!

It’s all fun and games until the litter box calls!

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!

Here are my responses:

The last time I went outside was yesterday (I’m writing this Thursday morning). It smelled like fall in South Carolina. It made me so happy, yet even more homesick. It was a wonderful smell memory moment.

Money isn’t everything. Not even close.

I am sure being short is a blessing in disguise. I can’t wait to meet the Costume Designer.

My favorite word is Thanksgiving! It is also my favorite food. And, one of my favorite memories.

  3. I am proud of _________.
  4. If I could time travel, I would visit the year _________.

snow-white-913740_640

Here are my responses:

Being short is sometimes very frustrating. I feel like such a toddler having to ask people to reach things for me at the store. I haven't yet learned to whistle my way through it like the guys pictured above.

If sneezes were worth money, then I would be rich. If potty trips were, then I would be even richer!

I am proud of our children and their ability to overcome adversity. I am proud of David and how he fought his way back from three strokes. He refused to let the strokes win. We’ve gone two years now stroke-free!

If I could time travel, I would visit the years that my ancestors first crossed the ocean to get to this land that wasn’t yet America. I would ask them what made them choose to leave their home countries to journey to this Great Unknown.

Guess what, folks! Ellen's new book, Prancie's Prayer, is available now on Amazon. Check it out!

  2. This month, I am looking forward to _______________.
  3. My morning routine always includes _________.
  4. I have a love-hate relationship with _________.
bench-560435_640

Here are my responses:

September is the perfect month for dreaming of the leaf color changes back home.

This month, I am looking forward to finding new recipes to try for our cooking channel, From the Kitchen of McClendon Villa. I hope that it someday becomes a channel that many folks enjoy visiting.

My morning routine always includes a mad dash to the bathroom. Nothing else is going to happen before that happens.

I have a love-hate relationship with the aging process. I love the fact that my hair is turning the shade of my foremothers’ hair. I have looked forward to that for years, especially while brushing my Grand-Aunt Mae’s long, beautiful hair. I do not love the fact that my body is fighting me every step of the way, every way that it can otherwise. There are too many challenges to overcome. Doing the things to overcome one are made impossible because of another. It is frustrating, but hey, I’ll have great hair in the process. :)

The Final Wednesday Hodgepodge

The Questions and the Answers

  1. What has been the highlight of your summer so far? (It's still summer people!)
I cannot think of a specific, singular highlight. There are several, such as putting the awfulness that was Corpus Christi behind us and moving forward, and Tiglet and the Soot Sprites coming to live with us.

TIglet-and-the-Soot-Sprites_7185_web
  1. What do you wish you'd done more of this summer? Less of?
I wish I’d been able to stay home more and live on my own body’s schedule more. I wish I’d been pulled in forty different directions less.
  1. Something you're looking forward to on your September calendar?
I look forward to making more videos for our new YouTube channel - From the Kitchen of McClendon Villa, and seeing where that takes us.
  1. Best/favorite book you've read this summer?

My favorite book this summer was a book on a not-favorite subject: Grief. It’s OK That You’re Not OK by Megan Divine was a really good book for me to read, in that it showed me my feelings were not wrong, that it is perfectly normal to not be on the same timetable as other folks expect me to be. You can read my review here.

  1. Share something positive, encouraging, or uplifting here.
We can endure anything for a moment. And then the next one. And then the next one. We are not alone. He is here.
  1. Insert your own random thought here.
I sure hate to see the Hodgepodge end. I haven’t been able to be as regular with it as I would like to have been, but I always enjoyed it. Best wishes to you, Joyce, as you go further with your writing and loving on that beautiful grandson of yours. :)

New Friday_Fill-In_Badge
Here are the fill-ins:
  1. The best teacher I ever had was ___________________.
  2. The worst teacher I ever had was __________________.
  3. I recently learned how to _________.
  4. I think everyone should know how to _________.
ship-1366926_640

Here are my responses:

Oh wow, there have been too many for me to be able to choose an absolute best. But, since I have to choose one, I will choose Mrs. Anna Dean Pennington. She was my 11th grade US History teacher. She put something on the board the first day of class and told us to remember it, that it would be on the exam. I did, and it was, and I still remember it to this day. What she wrote on the board was 1588. Its significance was the defeat of the Spanish Armada. She said if we’re ever confused and wondering who won that situation, to think about what language we were speaking. We were speaking English (well, okay, a Southern version of it!) and so that meant England won. I’m beginning to think that this is the one thing that I will remember for life.

The worst teacher I ever had...again, there have been so many. Ordinarily, I would say my first grade teacher Miss Cromer. You can read about her here. However, I will go to my high school years and choose Mr. Gosnell. He was a creep. He would humiliate me in front of classmates in a way far worse than Miss Cromer did. She was just trying to maintain control of her classroom. He, however, was bent on being a pervert. He would pull a chair up to my desk and sit there staring at me, blowing kissy faces at me, and totally killing me inside. This got to me on so many levels. I was painfully shy and introverted. The attention his actions brought to me was unbearable. Then, there’s the matter of a grown man making advances toward a 16 year old girl. I felt violated. Had I told my daddy, he would have killed him. I often think that I should have told my daddy. But, Mama always said never to do anything that would get my hot-tempered daddy in trouble, so I kept it to myself. I don’t think I ever even told her.

I recently learned how to build a stand for top down/from above photography and videography. It is how we record our cooking videos because I’m too bashful and self-conscious to show my face on camera.

I think everyone should know how to read and write. Being able to read opens up so many opportunities. If one can read, they can go anywhere. Books can help us to (mentally) travel to places we have no reason to ever expect to be able to go AND teach us how to do what we need to do to make it a possibility and not just a dream. The ability to read gives us the world!

2. _______________________makes me grumpier than Grumpy Cat.

3. If money grew on trees, I would _________.

4. I have a fear of _________.

fall-1072821_640

Here are my responses:

Reading my Bible and learning what I am meant to do, how I am meant to live, brings out the best in me.

People hurting or otherwise bothering my children makes me grumpier than Grumpy Cat. Someone getting between me and my children, literally or figuratively, makes me even grumpier than that.

If money grew on trees, I would happily live in a forest. Of course, I would happily live in a forest anyway. I grew up in the woods and that is the setting that makes me happiest...Well, the woods and old cemeteries. But I wouldn’t want to live in a cemetery. :)

I have a fear of being abandoned and unloved. This has a basis in my childhood and has been a battle my entire life.

Here are my responses:

I have faith in Heavenly Father. I may not understand what’s going on, but I know He has it covered. Everything will be okay in the end.

Yesterday, I forgot stuff, much the same as every other day.

My favorite place to be is somewhere that doesn’t involve a lot of people. I love being out in nature, a quiet trail through the woods, and I love being in cemeteries, imagining the stories of the people that reside there.

If I was granted one wish, it would be for whatever is holding this family back to break loose and let us be on our way.

microphone-1185958_640

Here are my responses:

I can’t think of anything that I would like tickets to.

Please don’t ever, ever, EVER ask me to be a public speaker. Even if you have the top-notch cardiologist in the country on stand-by, please don’t ask me to talk in front of a group of people, even if that group is only 5 people.

I’d rather give birth than speak in front of an audience. That said, I did give birth to our first child in front of an audience. There were 30 or so student nurses in there when I gave birth to that boy.

By this time next year, I hope to be well on my way to pottery making. I don’t know how I will get there, but I fully intend to get there.

  1. Right now, I am loving _____________.
  1. The best advice I’ve ever been given is _________.
  1. If I had to choose a new first name, it would be _________.
JaredSuz_1986web2

Here are my responses:

I don’t know what I deserve a gold star for today. Maybe for not running away? haha

Right now, I am loving my Jesus and my family and thoughts of pottery making.

The best advice I’ve ever been given is a really more a bit of encouragement than advice. It came from my maternal grandma while I was expecting our first child. She said having a baby wasn’t a day at the beach, but it wasn’t anything to get all worked up over either. I was able to hold onto that thought as I birthed that 8 pound 8 ounce boy into this world. After hearing her birth experience with my mother, though, I don’t know how Grandma held onto that thought! Trust me, you don’t even want to imagine what happened.

If I had to choose a new first name, it would be...well, it wouldn’t exactly be new, but it would be exactly what my daddy wanted me to be named: Suzie Annie. My mama smooshed it together to make it Suzanne. Annie was my daddy’s great-grandma, who played a big part in raising him, and Suzie was her sister. For years, I was glad that my mama intervened, but now, I rather like the name as my daddy wanted it. If I ever do change my name, that is what I will change it to, in honor and memory of my daddy and his foremothers.

Am I the only one who is not addicted to television? Just about every place in town has at least one screen and many have way more than that, all on different channels. Even the local mental health center refuses to turn them off. It is ridiculous.

Jesus is my hero. He gave everything for me, even His life, so that I could live. He is sinless, spotless, perfect and always ready to rescue me.

If I could eat only one food for the rest of my life, it would be SHRIMP!

Friday the 13th is a fun day because of all the people that are superstitious about it.

melting-155936_640

Here are my responses:

When it is hot, I feel like I am melting. But, thanks to menopause, I also have really cold cold flashes. So, I get to be cool for a few minutes each day.

I am looking forward to something really big this month. I have waited for years for this. Drum roll, please!

My little sister, the youngest of my parents’ children, will turn 50! Being the good big sister that I am, I am going to make sure she doesn’t forget this one. Haha

The theme song of my life...Hmm, I am going to have to ponder this one a bit. One thing’s for sure, it wouldn’t be My Way. This version of Elvis singing brings tears to my eyes. It was recorded the year that he died.

Our kids turned us on to the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series. I think one of the songs performed by Twilight Sparkle says a lot about how I've felt over the course of my life. Well, except for the whole princess bit. I've never felt like a princess.

There is no such thing as a life without sorrow and grief. It touches all of our lives, to some degree, at some point.

We need to get over this whole “be over it in two weeks” mindset. It takes longer than two weeks for a broken leg to heal, so why shouldn’t a broken heart take longer? If you have lost someone you love, and you truly loved them, you will be living with this loss for the rest of your life. Being expected to be over it in two weeks is a bunch of hooey.

Here are my responses:

Fireworks are beautiful and fun, but very loud! I don’t like the loudness, but love the colors and trying to photograph them.

Well, we don’t go on 4th of July picnics, but I imagine one of my favorite picnic foods would be fried chicken.

I begin every day with a run to the bathroom and, most of a time, a prayer. That first prayer is often, “Please let me make it in time!”

David and our kids are the best thing since sliced bread. I couldn’t imagine life without them.

Here are the fill-ins:
  1. My favorite Disney character is __________________.
    2. If I could stay any age for life, I would choose to be age ___________________.
    3. _________ is my secret talent.
    4. Life is like a _________.

Here are my responses:

My favorite Disney character is Grandma Tala from Moana. She is such an expressive, loving, and supportive grandma. She knew what was inside Moana to do, her destiny, and helped her to it. She is the one that speaks one of my most favorite lines in that movie: “There's nowhere you could go that I won't be with you.” It gets to me every time I hear it.

Part of me says that I would choose to stay 17, but, although David and I were together then, we weren’t yet married and I was still under parental authority. So, I will choose 19. At 19, I was a young married girl with my whole life ahead of me and no clue of the many things that were ahead for me or would be removed from me. It was a time of hope and excitement. AND, a much better body!

I think any talent I have must be a secret because I haven’t found an actual talent yet. Maybe that will change once I get more into the pottery making. I sure hope so. I don’t want to disappoint my ancestors, too.

Life is like a big puzzle without a picture on the box front. Maybe you can find the edge pieces with no problem, but the rest you’re on your own trying to get all figured out. Each piece is a surprise.

Wednesday Hodgepodge

The Questions and the Answers

First things first, Happy Birthday to my wonderful, funny, beautiful husband. :)

1.Describe your 30's in one sentence. If you're not yet 30 tell us one thing you hope to accomplish once you hit that particular decade.

My 30s were full of babies, children, and the biggest move of my life.
  1. Is it harder for you to exercise or eat healthy?
Exercise is harder for me. Not because I don’t want to do it, necessarily, but because of breathing difficulties.
  1. June 7th is National VCR Day. Huh? Anyway this reminded me of something I saw on Facebook listing household items we no longer have and the VCR was on it. I couldn't put my hands on that list, but found another list here of 21 items we all had ten years ago, but which are now obsolete-
bookshelves (WHAT!!???), drip coffee makers, alarm clocks, file cabinets, desktop computers, printers, printed phone books, answering machines, fax machines, paper shredders, a Rolodex, CD racks, CD burners, china cabinets, home phones, entertainment consoles, DVD players, calculators, takeout menus, incandescent light bulbs, and cable TV

Your thoughts? How many on the list do you still have? Still use?

We still have and use a VCR as well as a DVD player. Our house is loaded with books, therefore, well-used bookshelves. There are at least 3 desktop computers here still in use, as well as a paper shredder, a Rolodex, CD racks, and CD burners. We have a couple of printers, one still in use and that one includes fax capabilities. “They” still deliver printed phone books about every year to the end of our driveway. We also have an old 500 phone, though we no longer have a landline. There are several calculators around here that are used. I think there is an incandescent light bulb still in one of the closets.
  1. What's something you see disappearing in the next ten years?
At the rate I’m going, ME!
  1. How did you celebrate your birthday this past year? Is that typical?
I have no clue what we did for my birthday last year and, yes, that is typical - the forgetting, that is.
  1. Insert your own random thought here.
I love the Moana movie! It is so inspirational. It awakened my heart to the call of my potter ancestors.

Have a blessed day, y’all!

1. It is _____________________.

2. The best part of last week was ___________________.

3. Every summer, I ___________.

4. Once upon a time, _________.

Here are my responses:

It is nearly midnight as I type this. I am sleepy, but don’t want to go to sleep. The days are so busy that, if I want to do anything on my want-to list, I just have to get used to doing it while fighting sleep. Sleep usually wins, though.

The best part of last week was that it ended. It contained the death of my Aunt Judy as well as the one year anniversary of “Ma”, also named Judy. She was the mother of my best friend in high school. She was a great Ma to me. I could talk to her about anything. She didn’t judge. She let us all live our own lives and was there to listen whenever we needed to talk. She was great. I sure do miss her.

Every summer, I melt. This is Gulf Coast Texas and it gets HOT. It gets hot long before it is officially summer.

Once upon a time, I had a cute little frog named Vivaldi. But, she grew up and followed the call of her Prince Ludwig, and they lived happily ever after out in the wilderness of our backyard.
