Book Review: 150 Best Recipes for Cooking in Foil: Ovens, BBQ, Camping by Marilyn Haugen

150 Best Recipes for Cooking in Foil: Ovens, BBQ, Camping by Marilyn Haugen

When I was a young boy, I was a boy scout and a girl scout. You see, my mother was the troop leader and I went to all the meetings. I was about the same age as most of the girls, so I got to participate in the meetings.

The boy scouts taught some about outdoor cooking and outdoor living, but the girls learned much more. They learned how to make life outside a lot like it was indoors.

One thing they taught was cooking in the coals of a campfire using foil. Well, 150 Best Recipes for Cooking in Foil: Ovens, BBQ, Camping by Marilyn Haugen would be an excellent resource for those who want to make camping a lot more fun and a lot less like eating a brontosaurus burger cooked until it is burnt.

Once, we boy scouts had to cook on the fire for ourselves and our fathers. The fathers could not help. I made what we called Steak in Aluminum Foil. While the others were eating those burnt brontosaurus burgers and severely overdone hot dogs, Dad and I were chowing down on a delicious steak, potatoes, onions, and carrots. I can only imagine what I could have done had I had this outstanding resource. Even the eleven year old boy that I was could have made great food by following this book.

I have to give 150 Best Recipes for Cooking in Foil all five stars. It is very well-written and has many outstanding recipes.

Book Review: 300 Best Potato Recipes: A Complete Cook's Guide by Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh

300 Best Potato Recipes: A Complete Cook's Guide by Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh

Our family is mostly Irish. Therefore, we love anything to do with a potato. This is why 300 Best Potato Recipes: A Complete Cook's Guide by Kathleen Sloan-McIntosh was such a great book for us.

Not only are there all kinds of easy to follow recipes in this book, there are also a lot of “fun facts” about the potato. There is sort or a Ripley’s Believe It Or Else” section in the front of the book where readers are treated to some little known facts about the potato.

These recipes are easy to follow with a good bit of detail for each recipe. It makes following the steps so easy even a husband could follow them.

We think you will love 300 Best Potato Recipes like we do. We give it all five stars and a slab of bacon.

Book Review: You Can Have It! More Than 125 Decadent Diabetes-Friendly Recipes by Devin Alexander

You Can Have It! More Than 125 Decadent Diabetes-Friendly Recipes by Devin Alexander

I have been a diabetic for over 42 years. If one sticks strictly to their diet, they feel like they get their choice of flavored cardboard.

Not so with You Can Have It!. This book has many recipes for some very tasty things. The instructions are so detailed that even I could make them, but I won’t because Suzanne is so good at it.

If you are tired of the same-o same-0 recipes, try this book and see if you don’t enjoy your food a little more.

Book Review: The Gluten-Free Baking Book: 250 Small-Batch Recipes for Everything from Brownies to Cheesecake by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt

The Gluten-Free Baking Book: 250 Small-Batch Recipes for Everything from Brownies to Cheesecake by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt

The people at Robert Rose continue to bat them out of the park with their great recipe books. The Gluten-Free Baking Book: 250 Small-Batch Recipes for Everything from Brownies to Cheesecake by Donna Washburn and Heather Butt is another grand slam home run for them.

This baking book has many great color photos and is really not just a recipe book, but is more of a mini course in baking and, in this case, gluten-free baking.

The recipes are amazing and easy to follow. There are step-by-step instructions for making small batches of gluten free recipes, including many desserts.

We do think that this book should be read along with Eat Wheat by John Douillard. The combination would be awesome and very instructive for those with celiac disease, and those who love them.

The Gluten-Free Baking Book is very well-written and beautifully illustrated. We give it all five stars and a batch of brownies, too. This would make an excellent Mothers’ Day gift.

Book Review: Beautiful Bundts: 100 Recipes for Delicious Cakes and More By Julie Ann Hession

Beautiful Bundts: 100 Recipes for Delicious Cakes and More
By Julie Ann Hession

Review written by David.

A big redneck like me has had no end of fun picking on the ladies who brought bundt cakes to the church dinners. “Hey, Ida Mae, there’s a hole in your cake!” However, Ida Mae will get the last laugh when she brings one of these Beautiful Bundt cakes to the church dinner.

What is not to enjoy when Ida Mae brings a sausage stuffed bundt cake? And, who is not gonna like a turkey meatloaf bundt cake?

There are step-by-step instructions for each recipe and, just to make sure that “Even a Redneck can do it”, there are step-by-step pictures for many of the techniques involved in making these eye-opening, mouth-watering delights.

From classic pound cakes, s’mores cakes, all the way up to red velvet bundts, you will love these cakes.  There is even a two potato bundt cake in here. Since this fat redneck is allergic to sweet potatoes, we will have to substitute some other potato.  But it sounds and looks delicious. A mac and cheese bundt?  Really?

Ida Mae will be the one laughing while Jimmy Joe asks for seconds or even thirds of these wonderful, easy to make, bundt cakes.

Book Review: 175 Best Small-Batch Baking Recipes: Treats for 1 or 2 By Jill Snider

175 Best Small-Batch Baking Recipes: Treats for 1 or 2
By Jill Snider

We were sent a review copy of 175 Best Small-Batch Baking Recipes Treats for 1 or 2 free of charge for the purpose of writing this review.

We are empty-nesters.  We went from a household that once had as many as 6 people, all the way down to 2. Talk about an adjustment.

There was a time when we would have to make multiple batches of cookies just so everyone could have one or two.  We did not have to send out invitations to the kids’ birthday parties because we already had a house full.

Now that all the kids have gone on to do their things, we have had to adapt.  175 Best Small-Batch Baking Recipes: Treats for 1 or 2 is a good tool for us to have in the toolbox because there is such a difference.

Empty-nesters like us need books like this to help us reduce the servings of the treats we make.  The book is well-written and easy to follow.

If you love shortbread cookies like we do, you simply have to try this book.

We give 175 Best Small-Batch Baking Recipes: Treats for 1 or 2 all five stars.  We think you will, too.

Book Review: Aquafabulous: 100+ Egg-Free Vegan Recipes Using Aquafaba By Rebecca Coleman

Aquafabulous: 100+ Egg-Free Vegan Recipes Using Aquafaba
By Rebecca Coleman

Who would have thought it, you can make a substitute for eggs in many recipes with bean water?

We were sent a review copy of Aquafabulous 100+ Egg-Free Vegan Recipes Using Aquafaba for the purpose of writing this review.

We have been trying to live healthy for a while now.  We have reduced our intake of animal products as much as possible. But some things are hard to give up, like cake and omelettes.

Aquafaba, which is really just water drained off of beans, can be used in place of eggs in many recipes.  Who knew?

The author, Rebecca Coleman, teaches readers the basics in the first part of the book and then she gets into actually making many tasty treats.  She even helps us with recipes for the beans that are left over after making the aquafaba.

If you are trying to eat healthier, Aquafabulous 100+ Egg-Free Vegan Recipes Using Aquafaba would make a great addition to your kitchen library.
