Book Review: Eat Cake. Be Brave. By Melissa Radke

Eat Cake. Be Brave. By Melissa Radke

Eat Cake. Be Brave. by Melissa Radke is totally hilarious. The author has a sense of humor that just won’t quit. She made me laugh, REALLY laugh.

It is also incredibly sad. I don’t mean just a little sad, but deep down in your soul sad. The kind that brings up tears that have been buried for so long you thought they’d gone. But, you know they haven’t because they are now soaking everything in sight.

I can relate to the life Melissa has lived in so many ways. Like, questioning Heavenly Father on why He’d give us a talent or desire, but put obstacles in our way that prevent us from fully realizing that talent or desire. Or, answering our prayers, and then taking our heart’s desire from us. I’ve been there, on both counts. It hurts.

People don’t make this life any easier, with their judgements of us. They judge us on something so shallow as our looks, not seeing that true beauty is what lies within us. They think we are unworthy to use our God-given talents because we aren’t one of the “beautiful people”.

Melissa is done playing that game. She tries to instill in us that it doesn’t matter what people say about us or how they judge us. Their thoughts about us don’t matter. What matters is what Heavenly Father thinks. He made us in His image and loves us, regardless of our physical attributes or lack thereof.

In the midst of all the laughter and the tears, Melissa’s message is clear: He doesn’t make junk. Don’t let other people control how you feel about yourself. He can use you in His kingdom. Live the life He gave you to live loud and proud, giving glory to Him.

And, most definitely, eat the cake! Don’t be afraid to be YOU!

Book Review: A License to Heal: Random Memories of an ER Doctor by Steven Bentley M. D.

A License to Heal: Random Memories of an ER Doctor
By Steven Bentley M. D.

Granny Clampett said the the M. D. after her name stood for “Mountain Doctor”. This could apply to Dr. Steven Bentley as well in his book A License to Heal: Random Memories of an ER Doctor where he tells of his experiences in various ERs, some of which were located in the very rural mountains of North Carolina.

People around you might begin to believe you have become half a bubble off center when they observe you reading A License to Heal.

You will laugh so hard your sides will ache.  Then, just a few paragraphs later, you will want to cry.  As you read further, you will become outraged. This roller coaster of emotions goes on throughout the book.

We give A License to Heal all five stars.  It is very informative and very entertaining. If you didn’t already know that health care isn’t about treating patients these days - it’s all about the money, you will learn that in this book.

There is no money in making people well.  The money is in treating them.  Gone are the days when the kindly, old doctor made house calls.  Now, doctors get disciplined if they take too much time with a patient.

This is a wonderful book and makes great reading.  It is well-written and entertaining.

Book Review: Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot By Mary Beth Temple

Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot
By Mary Beth Temple

Review written by David.

I am not a crocheter. I make a few things via loom knitting, so I could empathize a little with Mary Beth Temple’s plight in her book Hooked for Life: Adventures of a Crochet Zealot.

But you know what, even if you don’t know the difference between a crochet hook and a fishing hook you will enjoy this book.  I know too well about going to the yarn store and spending more money than anticipated.

Temple talks about the odd questions that she get in public when she is crocheting.  As of yet, this 6’3” 275 pound redneck has not been asked a single question when he sits his 5 gallon paint bucket down at the doctor’s office and takes out a loom and starts working with it. I suppose they figure if they don’t make any sudden moves they will be safe.

It really doesn’t matter if you know anything about yarn or yarn products at all.  You will get a belly laugh out of Hooked for Life.

We give it all five stars.  It is the kind of book you will tell your friends to buy, but you won’t loan them your copy.
