Book Review: The Biggest Win: Pro Football Players Tackle Faith by Joshua Cooley

The Biggest Win: Pro Football Players Tackle Faith by Joshua Cooley

We live in a world where being a Christian is becoming harder and harder. We read about celebrities all the time who live a life of total sin.

The Biggest Win: Pro Football Players Tackle Faith by Joshua Cooley gives a very different story of a group of professional football players who have dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ.

This is a truly inspiring story of a group of highly paid men, who are sitting on top of the celebrity world, who could have everything this sinful world has to offer.

Instead, these men have dedicated their lives to Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God, their wives, and their families.

The Biggest Win tells the back story. The pain, the hurt, the heartache, the many losses, the disappointment of not making it in the draft. It also tells of ministry to children who have been a part of trafficking. They have also dedicated a part of their lives to making a difference in the lives of terminally ill children.

The Biggest Win is very well-written and tells an awesome story. You will laugh and cry. This would make a great text for a small group, youth Bible study. We give it all five stars.

We were sent a complimentary Advance Reading copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor

Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor

From time to time, we get a book that is just screaming, “Me next, me next.” Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt by Kisha Taylor was one of those books. There are over 53,000 books in our to be read file, each with the hope that it will receive a review.

It is difficult to believe that this book is the first book out of the chute for this author. Taylor is a master storyteller who tells the story very well.

It does not matter that there are times this old Southern white male needed a hood-to-redneck dictionary. We speak the same language, Christian.

The author writes in such a way that you can feel the pain. You can feel the betrayal. Readers follow as one person after another in the main character’s life hurts her in one way or another.

Then, we read in this true story of how the main character overcame all odds. How she pulled herself up by the bootstraps she did not have and overcame.

We think Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt would make a good book for a small group Bible Study. The author makes no excuses for her character and she admits to mistakes along the way.

We give this book all five stars. It is one of those books you won’t want to put down. One that you want to think everything is rosey in the end, but it is about real life. You will want to buy a copy for all those independent black women in your life and maybe a copy for that redneck man, too.

We were sent a complimentary copy of Overcoming the Hand You Were Dealt. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: Stranger No More: A Muslim Refugee’s Story of Harrowing Escape, Miraculous Rescue, and the Quiet Call of Jesus by Annahita Parsan and Craig Borlase

Stranger No More: A Muslim Refugee’s Story of Harrowing Escape, Miraculous Rescue, and the Quiet Call of Jesus by Annahita Parsan and Craig Borlase

If your heart needs a faith lift, Stranger No More may just well be what the doctor ordered.

This book takes us from a journey when the author was very young all the way past the loss of a loving husband, through a terrible second husband who was evil incarnate, and then on to becoming a Christian and later a pastor.

You need to hold onto your box of tissues while you read this book. You will hear of strangers who show wonderful kindness and those close to her show unspeakable horrors.

We follow her through life in prison, and so much more. You will see God shine through it all and perform many miracles. This is one of those books you will tell others, “You’ve got to read this!”

We give Stranger No More all five stars. It is well-written and exciting, in both a good and a bad way. You will hang on the edge of your seat and you will not want to put the book down.

Book Review: Called to Stand: How a Small Christian Ministry Courageously Stood Up to Government Tyranny By Patricia Feijo

Called to Stand: How a Small Christian Ministry Courageously Stood Up to Government Tyranny
By Patricia Feijo

From time to time we read a book that makes us slow down to take in all the details.  Called to Stand: How a Small Christian Ministry Courageously Stood Up to Government Tyranny by Patricia Feijo is one of those books.

The author takes us on a journey with her and her husband as they seek God. They lived the kind of life many would like to, but are afraid to step out in faith.

From traveling to foreign countries at the drop of a hat to taking in total strangers they felt needed God’s help, this family has done it all.

Then, the couple felt led to start a health food business.  This business became the subject of a federal witch hunt.  It appears the federal government thinks we, the American people, are too stupid to think for ourselves.

Most of Called to Stand is spent chronicling the story of that ongoing federal witch hunt.

We give Called to Stand all five stars. This book is extremely well-written. It is the kind of story that draws the reader into it.  The reader can actually feel the desperation of the family as they go through not only governmental persecution, but at times persecution and abandonment by fellow Christians.

If you are a Christian, you simply must read this book.

If you believe in the freedom to choose your own health plan, you must read this book.

If you believe in the free enterprise system, you must read Called to Stand.

You should add Called to Stand to the list of gifts you give out this Christmas.  This is the one gift that will work for anyone on your Christmas list that can read.

When you buy your copy, make sure to buy a second copy to give to your church.  You may even want to make this the text for a small group prayer study in your church.

We were sent a complimentary copy of Called to Stand in the PDF version.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Press Release: Captive Faith – Prison as a Parish - Christian History Announces its Latest Issue

Captive Faith – Prison as a Parish - Christian History Announces its Latest Issue

Christian History Magazine & Website -  A Continuing Study Resource Offered to the Home, Church Libraries, Homeschoolers, High Schools, Colleges & Universities

Worcester, PA, September 5, 2017 – Christian History Institute (CHI), publisher of Christian History magazine (CH), announces its latest issue, titled: Captive Faith – Prison as a Parish. The entire issue focuses on the long history of Christians in prison, visiting prisoners, redeeming captives, and attempting to improve prison conditions.

This issue, #123, contains eight in-depth articles that explore both major imprisonment thought & ministry movements, across the two thousand years since Christ walked on earth. Articles also include stories of the lives and times of individuals whose work documented and changed the lives of prisoners and reformers who sought to improve living conditions of prisons as well as the spiritual well-being of inmates.

“This issue gives examples of a wide spectrum of prison experiences from biblical accounts of imprisonment to the twentieth century,” said Ken Curtis, founder of Christina History magazine and producer of the documentary, Blessedness out of Brokenness, filmed at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, often called Angola. “Some of the most famous writings of Western civilization took form within prison walls. We believe that the excerpts and accounts that follow will be of interest to all readers and an inspiration to all…”

A special feature of this issue, the Ken Curtis Editor’s note, which was taken from a planned but never published book, commemorates CHI’s long-standing relationship with prisoners and prison administrators. Curtis, in scripting and producing the documentary, Blessedness out of Brokenness, identified a link between individuals of faith who face a death sentence and individuals of faith who face a terminal cancer diagnosis. After facing such a diagnosis, he died cancer in 2011. Due to his free distribution of the former CHI publication, Glimpses, to US prisons and jails, many came to faith in Jesus Christ and some contributed to setting remarkable standards for prison reform, as evidenced in film. Now, the film is freely offered to readers, by way of a complimentary Web link in conjunction with the release of this issue at: www.christianhistorymagazine.org.

CH issue #123, contains 8 feature articles; a chronology time-line; an archive of rare and beautiful art-work & photos; a ‘letters to the editor’ section and an extensive, associated reading list compiled by the CH editorial staff. The magazine is available on-line and can be conveniently read, on screen at: www.christianhistorymagazine.org.

The entire CH archive collection of 123 issues can be searched, along with books and study-guides, using the website’s robust search engine feature. The website, combined with a magazine subscription is offered at no-cost as a study resource for the home & homeschoolers, church libraries, middle/high schools, as well as to colleges & universities. It is the mission of CHI donors and staff to make this resource as widely and freely available as possible (donations gratefully accepted).

The following articles can be read and examined in detail on-line at: What’s Inside?

Why Christian History?
“Christian history has been largely removed from the American public education system that Christian leaders began in the early years of this nation,” said Michael Austin, a Christian commentator. “After years of decline, our public schools no longer teach the Bible’s founding contribution to Western Civilization. Christians have influenced our culture’s values regarding faith, freedom and mercy. Yet, today, faith in God is being openly questioned and attacked.”

George Barna, speaking of data gathered in a recent survey, said, “Young people couldn’t think of anything positive that the church stood for.” In a video interview, Barna Further reported, “We’re essentially in the Dark Ages, in America today.” (View YouTube, Titled: ‘Young Americans see nothing positive in church - says George Barna.’)

Book Review: Jesus in the Courtroom: How Believers Can Engage the Legal System for the Good of His World by John W. Mauck

Jesus in the Courtroom: How Believers Can Engage the Legal System for the Good of His World
by John W. Mauck

There is no question by anyone who has paid attention to the news lately that Christians are under attack. Jesus in the Courtroom: How Believers Can Engage the Legal System for the Good of His World by John W. Mauck discusses these attacks in detail.

The author, John W. Mauck, gives examples of how municipalities have tried to use zoning laws to prevent churches from servicing an area.  He also speaks of how the government muzzles Christians, preventing them from saying what is Biblical.

Jesus in the Courtroom is well-written.  Readers hear stories of how Christians have used the legal system to spread the word of God. We give it all five stars.

Mauck challenges Christians to pick up the standard and fight for God however we can.  Pray, send cards, encourage, vote, and speak out.

We think all Christians should make Jesus in the Courtroom a part of their library.

Book Review: Who Told You That You Were Naked? By William E. Combs

Who Told You That You Were Naked?
By William E. Combs

We were sent a review copy of Who Told You That You Were Naked? free of charge for the purpose of writing this review.

Who Told You That You Were Naked? is a very well-written discussion of God’s grace and His plan for saving us from our sinful nature.

There are dramatizations used as illustrations of what might have happened that are not necessarily what did happen. The only fault we see with the book is that it isn’t always disclosed at the beginning of the dramatizations that it is only an illustration.

We feel that Who Told You That You Were Naked? is a great read for those who have a good grasp of their faith and are craving a little more understanding.  It may be a bit confusing for those new to Christ.

Who Told You That You Were Naked? is very well-written and very well-researched.  The author has a very keen grasp of theology and is very good with using other parts of the Bible to help readers understand what they are reading about in the Garden of Eden.

William E. Combs gives his readers great stories of how God spoke to him and others in his life in ways that made a great impact on him. Readers will see the Hand of God in these stories and His awesome power.

We give Who Told You That You Were Naked? all five stars. We think this is an important read and may well make a good text for a Bible study group in your church.

Grab two of your favorite translations of the Holy Bible, pour yourself a cup of coffee, and relax while you read and study Who Told You That You Were Naked?

Book Review: Hilly Pilly & the Little White Lie

Hilly Pilly & the Little White Lie
By Wayne Lobdell

We were sent a review copy of Hilly Pilly & the Little White Lie so that we might write this review.

Hilly Pilly & the Little White Lie is a cute little story full of jokes and lots of fun.  It is absolutely fun and the illustrations are great.

There is a biography of the author at the end of the book and it is even better than the story.  We think Hilly Pilly & the Little White Lie deserves all five stars and two snaps up in a circle.  This is a fun story that you will want to buy for your kids and read to your kids.  Who knows, maybe Hilly Pilly will visit your house, too.

Five Minute Friday - Want

Five Minute Friday

I learned about Five Minute Friday years ago when it was under the leadership of Lisa-Jo Baker. Now, it is captained by Kate Motaung over at Heading Home. Be sure to click the button below and join in this freeing experience of writing on a topic for five minutes, unedited, just writing, not worrying, spilling out of your heart what the prompt inspires. Come on, you can do it! Let your heart fly through your fingers freely for five minutes, link up, and then visit the person that linked up before you.

This week's word is: Want.

Want…I want to be free, free of the fear that has been instilled in me since I was a little girl. Not good enough. She does this better than you. Your bumble bee craft isn't the best. She sings better than you. She's younger.  I choose her.

I want to be free to know that I am loved and to love fully in return, to have no doubts. To be able to go out in public without how inadequate and imperfect I am being rubbed in my face and ripping out my heart.

I want to have value to those that say they love me. Heavenly Father showed my value to Him when He sent His son to die for my sins. Yes, *my* sins, just as he did for yours. I am not some incurable plague. I do have value. I got a God-said on that one and that God-said came in the form of a man nailed to a tree. If I am worth that much to Him, who are you to determine my value? And why is it so important to me to be valued by you, a mortal human, when that God-said is for eternity?

I want an answer to the questions and an end to the fear and heartache and uncertainty. I want and need a place of heart safety here on this earth. I want to be free of the fear of desertion.

I have His love. I want His peace.

*****

Now, it's your turn. Respond in a blog post of your own and join the linky over at Kate's page or answer in the comments. The choice is yours.

Have a blessed day!
