Book Review: 5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson

This 320 page book is more like a course in life management than any we have seen.

If you take Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover, stir in a little of Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking, add a pinch of The Autobiography of Ben Franklin, and then top it with The Millionaire Next Door, you have the recipe for 5 Day Weekend.

5 Day Weekend: Freedom to Make Your Life and Work Rich with Purpose by Nik Halik and Garrett B. Gunderson takes your typical book on money management and stands it on its ear.

In these pages one will find tons of ideas about how to make more money through active methods so that one can then make more money passively. This is one of those books you wish you had read when you were younger.

Nik Halik has an engaging writing style that makes the book very readable and enjoyable and, if you aren’t careful, you just might learn something. We give it all five stars.

You may be thinking that 5 Day Weekend is just another book on finance; you would be wrong. Instead, it is about living the life you want to lead. Readers learn about goal setting, planning, budgeting, and more.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Press Release: How One Man Went from Homeless to Successful Entrepreneur

How One Man Went from Homeless to Successful Entrepreneur

Joe Pippins, founder of The Fishing Caddy, went from homeless to successful entrepreneur and won the competition on the Steve Harvey’s FUNDERDOME show

OLATHE, KANSAS – (July 17, 2017) –The National Alliance to End Homelessness reports that there are over 564,000 homeless people living on the streets of America. The last place that most people would assume they would end up is competing on a national television show as one of two entrepreneurs trying to sell their invention to the audience in order to win seed money. Yet that’s exactly what happened when Joe Pippins, founder of The Fishing Caddy, squared off against another entrepreneur on the Steve Harvey’s FUNDERDOME, and walked away with the grand prize of $20,000.

“I’ve been homeless, so I know what it’s like to hit rock bottom,” explains Joseph Pippins, creator and founder of The Fishing Caddy. “But I also know the kind of attitude that it takes to go from being homeless to creating something that you can sell to the public. I know what it takes to become an entrepreneur, especially when you don’t have all the tools handed to you on a silver platter.”

Pippins, who has a love of fishing and spending quality family time outdoors, saw a problem in today’s modern high-tech world. Too many families were not spending time together, engaging in things like camping and fishing, and he had an idea that led to his creation. He wanted to make it easy for families to head out fishing again, so he created an all-in-one fishing caddy. The Fishing Caddy makes it easy for people to grab it and be ready to go fishing, without having to lug lots of gear down to the water. It features two built-in fishing rod holders, a padded seat or tackle box, a live well for keeping the fish that are caught, a cup holder, and more.

After having the product idea, he took it to Kickstarter, where he was able to raise over $15,000 to turn his idea into a reality. No stranger to the entrepreneurial spirit, Pippins grew up in the inner city, where many around him turned to selling drugs in order to make some cash. He took a different route, making his first sale when he sold toys out his window so that he could raise money. He also bartered, and by middle school he began selling candy to other students when the school lunch program was taken away, leaving him to eat scraps and leftovers from other kids. He also built a team around him, to help with the candy sales, and even took to selling Mortal Combat codes to his peers to earn money.

So what does it take to go from growing up poor and at one time being homeless to creating a product people will flock to? Here are the top six principles that helped Pippins get there:

  • Hard work. Nothing can take the place of good old-fashioned hard work. When you are willing to work hard, good things are going to happen. Roll up your sleeves, realize there is no easy way, and dig in to start working hard toward your goals.

  • Passion. Having an idea can only take you so far. You have to be passionate about it, and be determined. That determination will keep you pushing past the barriers so that you can move closer and closer to your goals.

  • Fill a gap. Take a look around and see what’s missing in your community or country. What is needed or what can you improve upon? If you can find a way to fill a gap, you will have a built-in audience that will be interested in your product or service.

  • Self-sufficiency. Learn from the start that the world owes you nothing. If you want to get ahead or be successful in life, you will have to be the one to make it happen. Don’t wait for others to do it for you, because it won’t happen. Pave your own path toward success.

  • Push past fear. Millions of people have good business ideas, but they are stifled by fear. Don’t let fear hold you back from trying out your idea. You can never become successful from your idea if you are not willing to push past fear to give it a try.

  • Forget excuses. It’s easy to come up with excuses for why you shouldn’t or can’t get things done. But if it matters to you and you want to succeed at it, you will find a way, rather than an excuse. Excuses are nothing more than us holding ourselves back before the public has even seen what we have to offer.

“I’m happy to have made it this far with The Fishing Caddy and I can’t wait to introduce it to more people,” added Pippins. “With the right mindset and a drive to succeed, you can overcome and get noticed. Winning on the Steve Harvey’s FUNDERDOME was amazing and is going to take my dreams to the next step.”

Competing on Steve Harvey’s FUNDERDOME, Pippins went toe-to-toe against another entrepreneur with the audience in the judges seat. The show, hosted by Steve Harvey, has two entrepreneurs square off in front of a live audience. They try to convince the audience, who are the final judges of who wins the money, that their invention is the one that should be picked. Pippins competed on the July 16, 2017 show and was voted the winner, where he was awarded the grand prize of $20,000 seed money to help further launch his product.

The Fishing Caddy is all made in America, comes with a 60-day money back guarantee, and a two-year warranty. The all-in-one caddy makes it easy for anglers to go fishing. The caddy comes in camo or blue ice designs with the option to have a padded seat top or a tackle box lid. Prices range from $69.95 to $129, depending on the desired features. Billed as the world’s first all-in-one fishing system, it has been designed to help make fishing more enjoyable and give people more time to fish, rather than track down and organize their tackle and supplies. The Fishing Caddy is available online at Amazon, Etsy, and at the company website: https://thefishingcaddy.com.

Guest Post: 3 Ways to Find Your Entrepreneurial Passion

3 Ways to Find Your Entrepreneurial Passion

So you’ve decided you want to become an entrepreneur, and you couldn’t be more excited. The promise of working for yourself, making a difference in the world, and connecting with a tribe of people you really, really love…the entrepreneurial life tons of benefits, so it’s no wonder you want to try it on. After all, a recent study by the Kauffman Foundation found that 40% of new businesses are started by women—and a lot of those are happening among the millennial age group.

But where to start? Taking first steps into entrepreneurship can also seem daunting. To succeed, it’s important to invest time upfront to find a business idea that really works for you.

The ideal business will be one that joins your passion and skills with a need that people have (ideally people you like and relate to), and produces a product or service that those people will pay you for.

It’s probably safe to say that most small businesses grow out of someone’s passion. But a lot of them fail because people begin with an idea that’s too general and don’t take time to focus it. They don’t know exactly who they’re trying to reach, what they’re trying to do, or what problem they’re trying to solve. Because of lack of focus, they don’t differentiate from all the other people out there starting businesses in similar fields.

Focus is important in all parts of your business, but if you identify your passion first, the rest of the puzzle pieces will be easier. That’s because the more you love what you’re doing, the better prepared you’ll be to weather the storms and challenges that are an inevitable part of being an entrepreneur.

Now, the irony is that focus begins by casting a wide net and brainstorming a list of lots of passion ideas. Why? Because the first idea you come up with might not meet other criteria for business success. Maybe your passion lies with making a product for which there’s no real demand. Or it’s in a market that’s already saturated, or you can’t realistically manufacture it at a price people will pay, etc.

Another reason it’s smart to examine your own passions is that it can be easy to feel attracted to someone else’s business idea. We see a friend raking in money with a coaching business or online shop and think, “I could do that.” And maybe we could do it—but does that business fit our true passions?

These are all common pitfalls of exploring a business idea. The point is to really get to know yourself and what excites and motivates you.

So let’s get started on making a passion list for your entrepreneurial adventure.

Focus on What You Love

Write down a list of twenty things or activities you love or that you’re passionate about. Don’t overthink this. Just write. It might be hard to get to twenty. Maybe your list starts with “I’m passionate about helping single mothers find good housing,” and by the time you get to twenty, the only thing you can think of is “I’m passionate about pizza.”

This is a brainstorming exercise and there’s no right or wrong. Being passionate about pizza could someday blossom into a business. Try not to judge what you love.

Next, think back to your childhood. What activities, places, people, subjects did you always look forward to? What were your hobbies? What excited you? Summer camp…climbing trees…your collection of My Little Ponies? What about each thing made you happy? Was it the people you were around? The location? The creative energy? Be specific.

Now, mentally go back through your working life job by job and try to remember if there were times when you were so caught up in what you were doing that you lost track of time.

Again, pick out specific elements of that experience that made it so absorbing—get at the who, what, when, where, and why. Maybe you were working at a clothing store in a mall during college, and every shift, the time just flew by. What was it about that experience that you loved…working with the clothes and the colors? People interaction? Dealing with money? Write it all down.

What Are You Good At?

At this point you should have a list of ideas of activities, skills, or other pursuits from your own life that you’re passionate about.

The next step is to look realistically at how prepared you are to pursue these. To succeed in a business built around any of these areas, you’ll need to either have expertise or be able to acquire it.

Make a list of skills you have right now. What do you excel at? What formal training do you have, and informal or on-the-job skills have you gained? How do these cross over with the passions you’ve identified? What would it take to get proficient at a passion you’ve identified, but lack expertise in?

Look for Creative Synergies

By now you’ve done a lot of self-examination and learned a lot about what you love, and what you know. This is important work in helping you find a business niche that’s uniquely you and that you can sustain.

You can now explore creative ways your passions and skills could intersect or overlap to create a totally fresh business idea. Look at your list of passions and imagine putting any two (or more) of them together. How could you pair a love of running with a law degree? What would happen if you combined an interest in herbal medicine with a passion for writing? See what you come up with!

Keep all your ideas together, because you’re probably going to want to refer to them again in the future. You might also want to make a vision board where you can collect photos and images that help you pull your dream out of your mind and into something tangible that gives you direction.

Starting a business can be scary but you don’t have to do it alone.  Make sure you have the right mindset and schedule a free consult today.

Book Review: All In: 101 Real-Life Business Lessons for Emerging Entrepreneurs By Bill Green

All In: 101 Real-Life Business Lessons for Emerging Entrepreneurs
By Bill Green

We were sent a free review copy of All In: 101 Real-Life Business Lessons For Emerging Entrepreneurs written by Bill Green by his publicist.

This book is right down our alley.  This is a subject we love to discuss on our Redneck MBA blog.  Mr. Green brings some real-world perspective to the lessons we try to teach via that blog.

It is interesting that Mr. Green has used the slogan “Whatever It Takes” with his businesses.  The reason that is interesting is it is the motto of he city of Wharton, Texas, volunteer fire department and is written on the side of their biggest trucks.  Victims of disaster know that the fire department will do Whatever It Takes to keep them safe.

Mr. Green tells us that we need to keep pushing and go that extra mile. He speaks of providing outstanding customer service to differentiate us from all the competitors.

It seems that Mr. Green’s father taught him a great lesson. This is the same lesson that I learned by watching many great salesmen at work.  This lesson is the secret sauce that separates the good salesmen from the really great salesmen.

We think All In is an outstanding book and far better than most we have read on the subject, and there have been hundreds. We give All In all five stars and two snaps up in a circle.

We would love to see a reality show starring Mr. Green, sort of in the same format of a Gordon Ramsey show meets The Apprentice meets Shark Tank.

This would be a show where Bill would take people who have submitted business plans and mentor them through the startup of their company.  Show sponsors would provide the start up capital.

We believe that All In is a great book for anyone in business, especially  those who have little business experience.  We would love to see Mr. Green write a book on raising startup capital.  This would make a great gift for those you know who have that entrepreneurial itch and need to scratch it.

BOOK EXCERPT

Boss Truth #20
USE YOUR TALENTS
OR LOSE THEM

“For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” (Matthew 25:29)

The Parable of the Talents is a story about the use and underuse of gifts and talents. The parable tells us the talents were distributed “to each according to his own ability.” We all don’t have the same abilities, but each one of us has our own, and each one of us has responsibility to use the abilities we have been given. The story begins with a man who was given five talents – he worked with what he had, used them all, and gained five more. Likewise, the man with only two talents, worked with the little he had and gained two more talents. Lastly there was the man given one talent, who did absolutely nothing with it. The servant’s master was upset with the one-talent man, not because he didn’t develop as many talents as the others, but because he had done nothing with what he was given.

I believe you have amazing gifts inside you, but some are afraid to explore and add to them because of the fear of failure. Some people compare themselves to others who are multi-talented, and are convinced they can never be like them. The truth is, the Lord will never expect you to do more than what you are able–only to do the best with what He has given you. Don’t worry about others around you–focus on yourself. If you have that one thing going for you, work it like nobody’s business.
