2017 September Challenge: Back Where I Come From – Day 29

For more information on this challenge, click here.

29. Does your hometown have a newspaper?  Does it come out daily, bi-weekly, weekly, or some other frequency? Does your hometown have its own radio station?

Yes, my hometown newspaper is called Independent Mail. It has been a daily paper for many, many years.  Unfortunately, it is now a part of the USA Today Network and I don’t like that one bit! There are crappy ads all over the place, often with scantily clad people. There’s just so much crammed onto the online pages of the paper that it is too distracting. I have the online subscription because they won’t mail the print edition out here to Texas and I want to be able to keep up with the obituaries and some of the other news.  Folks shouldn’t have to endure naked chics in order to find out who has died recently. The ads should be relevant to the page.  On the obit pages, have flower, cemetery, or funeral home ads, not “Hey, check out the pool at our hotel” or whatever ads.

There were radio stations in town when I was a kid, but I don’t know if they are still operating or not.

28. Was your hometown like one big family or just a group of strangers?

The mill hill was mostly like one big family in a lot of ways.  Once we moved to Starr, it was more like a group of strangers. I never did feel like I fit in with the other folks.

27. If there were no restrictions such as money or employment, where would you most like to live?

I ponder this question often, but I just don’t know the answer.  I know I want to live out in a very rural area, not in town like we do.  Where that rural area is isn’t really so important at this point in my life.  South Carolina would be nice, but here in Texas would be okay, too. I just want to be out in the boonies somewhere!

26. Does your hometown experience all four seasons? If not, which ones does it skip over?

Yes, unlike here on the Texas Gulf Coast, Anderson County, South Carolina, experienced all four seasons and it was wonderful! Summers were hot, spring and fall were cool and colorful, and winter was cold, just like it is supposed to be.

23. Are you ever homesick for your hometown?

YES! I think about back home very often and wish that we had never left. But, we did and now we play the hand we’re dealt.

That being said, it just wouldn’t work for us to move back. So many things have changed back there and within us. We are where we are meant to be at this point in our lives.  Now, to bloom where we are planted, in spite of floods and droughts - of all kinds.

22. Did you have chores when you were a kid? What were they? What did you think about having chores? What was your least favorite chore? Is it still?

Yes, I had chores. I had to wash dishes and mop the floors. Our Wellington Street house had wood floors.  I didn’t mind mopping them, so long as they had been swept properly first. Sweeping was my little sister’s job.  I hated washing dishes, especially after we got older. There was always an excuse for her not to do her part of the dishwashing and I would end up having to do her share, too. Yes, it is still my least favorite chore.

I think that it is good for kids to have chores. They need to learn how to run a house and chores are a part of that. It helps to teach responsibility. A family is a team, or it should be.  Teams work together for the good of the whole team.  It shouldn’t be that one person does everything while other people do nothing and that includes the children.

21. Were there any flowers growing in your yard back home? What kind? Were you or your parents good gardeners?

There was a forsythia bush out front of the Wellington Street house in Anderson. Otherwise, I don’t remember any flowers any place I lived with my parents, other than the flowers on the dogwood trees that bloomed every year, just in time for Easter..

I don’t know that I am a good gardener. I have had successes along the way, but many more losses. I don’t remember my parents ever having a garden while I lived with them, or afterwards, for that matter.

20. Did you have a neighborhood park/playground?  Did you play there?

In the mill village in Anderson, there was a park and, yes, I most definitely played there. I loved to climb the slide and turn flips at the top of it before I slid down it.  Even after we moved to Starr, we road our bikes over there to play. It was this park where The Great ‘I Reckon’ Incident occurred when I was 15 years old.
