Wednesday Hodgepodge - 6 July 2016

1. How did you welcome the month of July, and tell us one fun thing you did to celebrate the 4th. (or the weekend for any non-USA residents playing along today)

We slept through most of it. It was too hot here to be awake for anything. We didn't venture out of the house for anything except that I went out to water the tomatoes (that are being stubborn!) and feed the neighborhood kitties.

2. Right now..what's your favorite red thing? white thing? blue thing?
Zoomie after getting stuck in the yard.

Red thing(s): My Zoomie and strawberries.
White thing: My family.
Blue thing: Their eyes.

Of course, Davey's brown eyes are my favorite brown things, too.:)

3. Wave the white flag, raise a red flag, fly your freak flag...which 'flag' have you flown most recently? Explain.

Probably the red flag. Menopause and 100+ temps. Need I say more?

4. According to Cond Nast Traveler these are the seven best places to visit in July-

a boat safari in Botswanna's Okavango Delta, Riviera Maya Mexico (it's whale shark season and apparently you can swim with them), Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons, Pamploma Spain, St. Petersburg Russia, the Fuji Rock Festival at Mount Naeba Japan, the Salzburg Festival in Salzburg Austria

If time and money weren't factors would you want to see any/all of these? Which would you most like to see and why?

I think that going to the mountain in Japan would be nice. Davey is in Okinawa and I don't know how far that is from that mountain, but it would be wonderful to see him and go to a cool place like that. Also, I think the festival in Salzburg would be fun. David's most recent immigrant ancestors were from Austria. It would be kind of like going home.

5. Grilled cheese, pimento cheese, or mac and cheese...your favorite from the cheesy treats listed?

I like all of them, but they don't like me. I like them in this order: Mac and cheese, grilled cheese, pimento cheese.

6. What makes you sweat?

Texas.

7. Your favorite movie with a 'patriotic' theme of some sort?

Gone With the Wind, Braveheart, Rob Roy all touch on patriotism. GWTW, both the South and the North fought for what they thought was right.  It was what it was.  Braveheart and Rob Roy, …fighting for freedom from oppression, for love of country.   Like Prego, patriotism is in there.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Why does it have to be so bloody hot in the summertime? I feel sorry for my mama for having to carry me through a long Southern summer, with no air conditioner!

I love this quote:

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
~Albert Camus

  1. Seems we all love to complain about the weather. You're moaning it's too hot (and I sympathise with that, especially at a certain time in life) we've been moaning it's too wet and where is summer? Although yesterday it decided to reappear and it's nice today but fortunately we don't have the kind of heat you have to put up with too often.

    1. Very true. We never have to ask where summer is around here. It seems we're always there. Very rarely does it get really cold here. We've had a lot of wet weather this year (a flood at the end of April and again in May) but we've had a couple of days now with no rain. I hope you get a break in the rain, too, unless your area is actually in a drought. Even then, it is nice to have a dry day where you can go out and do something fun. :) I hope you never have to deal with this kind of heat. I'd rather be cold than be this hot.

    1. I'll bet, especially if you're accustomed to a much cooler climate like the Blue Ridge area. What brought you to Texas in July?

    1. Was it an indoor or outdoor wedding, Joyce? I think outdoor weddings are pretty, but I can't imagine planning for one of those out there and especially not in July.

I'd love to stay cool. We have air conditioning, but my body has decided to melt even if I am standing right in front of the thing. haha

  4. Texas! HaHaHa....I spent a summer in Houston working as project manager on a Home Depot new store construction project...no AC on a construction site. I'd sneak off to sit in the rental car with the AC blasting, it was a miserable job assignment. I did get some time to visit the hill country in the fall, I loved it.
    Cheers!

    1. I think that I would have demanded frequent breaks and lots of ice water on that job. Of course, the water would have necessitated even more breaks for me. :) I'm glad you were able to spend some time with the AC in the car. That was better than nothing, that's for sure.

Have you ever been here for the spring wildflower displays? Late March/early April is the best time, it seems.

  5. A Southern summer doesn't sound like fun to me either. We think it's hot when it reaches the mid eighties! Lol

    1. The summer itself would be great if it didn't get so blasted hot. haha David and I are hot once it gets to 70 degrees. Neither of us like hot weather. It never really gets cold here, at least not cold to us. Some of the natives here are in parkas once it hits 60 degrees haha.

  6. It is hot here in NC too. It's actually the humidity that makes it so bad. I guess we complain when it gets too cold too...lol!

    1. I know that it got cold back home in South Carolina, but it has never really gotten cold here where we live in Texas, at least not sense our first Christmas here. We got snow that year. If I'm remembering correctly, it snowed in Mexico that year, too (2004).

I'm willing to risk complaining about that, too, if it ever happens again. haha

How hot is it there in North Carolina?

Our heat index at the moment (1:10pm) is 106 degrees, projected to go up to 109 degrees.

  7. This is a hot summer. Menopause or not! I love Texas. It is a lot like Kansas in the summer. I have lived in Kansas most of my life. I loved your answers to red, white, and blue!!

    1. Yes, it is very hot. From what I was told, Wednesday was supposed to be the hottest day of the year. That means it can only get better from here, right? :)

I've been to Kansas once. It was back in 2005 when we had to evacuate for Hurricane Rita. It was great! I loved how windy it was. I want to go back there some day. One of David's great-grandmothers was born in Oak Valley, Elk County, Kansas was back in 1879. She was a first generation American. :)

Thank you. I'm glad you loved my answers. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hope that you have a blessed day!

  8. Oh, I am feeling your pain. I endured my first pregnancy during the summer in Florida and my hot flash phase during summer here in PA...maybe not as hot, but killer humidity. Stay inside and crank the AC till it's over!

    1. I'm sorry you had so much heat to deal with during those heat-inducing times of your life. Wouldn't it be great if, when we're pregnant or menopausal, it could just stay in the 60s until our bodies are back to normal, so we aren't always on melt mode?

Humidity is horrible. The heat might be tolerable if it weren't so blasted sticky. Sometimes it is like walking into a wall of water, but it isn't raining.

I've only successfully carried one pregnancy through a summer and that baby (our oldest daughter) was born in December. Thankfully, I wasn't so sick with my girls as I was with the boys. The two boys were born in mid-to-late spring. Our baby girl was born toward the end of June, just after it changed from spring to summer. I don't know how my mama stood it being great with child twice, mind you, during a Southern summer! But, you endure what you have to.

I've been tempted to just make the inside of our chest freezer my room until this heat wave is over. haha.

  9. I agree with you on the weather. It's in the triple digits here and I can't take the humidity.

    1. Our humidity is at 55% right now, the temperature 93 degrees, but the heat index is 104 degrees. Here's hoping we both get cooler weather very soon! Have a blessed day. :)

    1. Thank you. :) Aside from sweating, did you have fun in Florida? I've only been there once and that was over 20 years ago.

      Have a blessed weekend!
