Book Review: Deadwood and Beyond by Kip Meyerhoff

Deadwood and Beyond by Kip Meyerhoff

Kip Meyerhoff proves that one can write a good mystery book without having to have graphic sex scenes every chapter and without having to have profanity.

Deadwood and Beyond is a great detective story about a private investigator and multiple investigations. The question is, how do all these investigations tie into one another? One simply has to read the book to find this out.

There are all sorts of mysteries in this book. It isn’t your typical “figured it out in the first chapter” kind of book.

Deadwood and Beyond is very well-written and very entertaining. We give it all five stars and a pot of coffee to boot. If you are tired of reading the drivel that normally makes up a mystery novel, you will be pleasantly surprised with this book.

Book Review: Forgotten Violets by Martin Niewood

Forgotten Violets by Martin Niewood

Forgotten Violets by Martin Niewood started off slow for me. Maybe I’m just too old for this genre, but it was very confusing to me...at first. I couldn’t follow what was happening. It was this way for the first 96 pages or so. However, on that page, it took a turn with a revelation. This is the way the last 100 pages went. I couldn’t put it down after this point.

Wow! There are many twists and turns packed in the last half of this book. Just when you think you may have it figured out, you find out that you don’t, and are a long way from figuring it out.

I am afraid to say much of anything for fear of spoiling it for you!

Nothing is as it seems. Meadow (the lead character), Elizabeth, and Parker try to sort through all of the chaos to get to the truth and not get killed in the process. This book has battles, both physical and mental, romance, friendship, and betrayal.

There is one intimate incident, but it was very conservatively written, not graphic at all, and only a sentence or two long. There is one scene describing illicit drug use, its consequences, and suicide.

If you like mysterious and supernatural story lines, you’ll enjoy Forgotten Violets.

Book Review: Jaybird’s Song By Kathy Wilson Florence

Jaybird’s Song
By Kathy Wilson Florence

If you like smiles, you’ll like this book. If you like books that make you cry, you’ll love this book.  All the way through, Jaybird’s Song was an emotional experience.

This book does a bit of time travel in that in one chapter, you’re in the turbulent 1960s and in the next chapter, you’re in 2003 and 2004.  This was a bit frustrating for me at first because I tend to prefer chronological order.  But, it grew on me and the back and forth rhythm became a bit of a comfort, a respite from the sad parts of one time frame or the other.

There are lots of smiles and tears shared, along with memories of events during the Civil Rights movement, integration, and personal family heartbreaks.  We get to witness some of the trials of the teenage years, some rather graphic, and those of the not-so-very young years.

Jaybird’s Song ultimately becomes about the struggle of the little girl inside of a hurting middle-aged woman, struggling to reconcile the love and the hurt of her family’s past and bringing that love - and forgiveness - forward to share with her children.

It is a great book and I give Jaybird’s Song all five stars. It has made me do a great deal of soul-searching myself.  Maybe it will do the same for you.

Book Review: Lowcountry Bonfire by Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bonfire
By Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bonfire is book #6 in the Liz Talbot Mystery Series by Susan M. Boyer. All of these books are great, but Lowcountry Bonfire is, I think, the most powerful one yet!

Once again, we are treated to Mama’s wonderful, drool-inducing cooking and Daddy’s antics, which aid in his favorite pastime of getting Mama riled up. Also, there is a bit of after life assistance as Liz and Nate seek to uncover the mysteries of the most recent crime on the island of Stella Maris, South Carolina. They have a few sticky moments that might cause you to hold your breath for a moment or two.

This one kept me wondering for the longest time about who did it and the answer was a definite surprise to me.  The wrap-up on this crime was a very sad one that left me on the verge of tears.  The discovery of “whodunit” was an emotional situation that was very believable. I could see it happening.  The sucker punch was enough to throw anybody over the edge.

There are some bad words in this story, one being the “f” word near the end. There are no really graphic intimate scenes. This book is pretty clean as far as that goes. I like this because when I read a crime caper mystery, it is for the mystery, not for any romance.

Lowcountry Bonfire gets all five stars. If you love a good mystery, you can’t go wrong with this one!

Book Review: Double Whammy by Gretchen Archer

Double Whammy

By Gretchen Archer

Double Whammy is a steady-paced mystery based in the world of casinos.  The main character is a young woman named Davis Way, who is a former police officer.  She takes on a potentially exciting – definitely not dull! - new job in Mississippi.  It quickly becomes clear that not everything is on the up and up.   Trusting anyone is a significant risk.  It seems that you never know who you’re working with or who’s your friend or your enemy.
We wondered throughout how the events in this story would be brought together.
We give this book three stars due to profanity and adult situations.  Although it isn’t particularly graphic, it is obvious what is happening.  Infidelity and violence are also included in this story.
Negative aspects aside, it was an interesting story and one couldn’t help but share in Davis’s frustrations.  If you’re into crime capers, you will find Double Whammy very entertaining.

We were provided a free copy of this book in order to review it.
