Book Review: Lowcountry Book Club

Lowcountry Book Club: A Liz Talbot Mystery
By Susan M. Boyer

Well, here we are back on Stella Maris. Susan M. Boyer takes us back for a fun trip to the South Carolina coast.

We have to say, we love the Liz Talbot mysteries.  They are very entertaining and they help us to enjoy what would otherwise be a same-ol’ same-ol’ life.

Life on Stella Maris is never same-ol’ same-ol’. Take in a crime, which may or may not be a murder, add in a cast of characters who all have some type of secret to hide, stir in a cast of good ol’ Southern people, mix in a guardian spirit, and poof, you have the perfect recipe to overcome the same-ol’ same-ol’.

Boyer is not like many writers of a series.  Instead of becoming predictable, dry, and repetitive, each new book is like a continuation of the last and takes new twists and turns.

These book are well-written and just plain fun.  Our author makes us hungry for good old Southern comfort foods.  This makes our mouths water and our tummies plead for some of that good old food.  We give Lowcountry Book Club all five stars along with two snaps up in a circle and some ham biscuits, too.

Even yankees can like the Liz Talbot books.  They can read them and pretend they grew up in God’s Country.  When you order your copy of this book, order all six books that have been written so far.  Just like eating certain potato chips, no one can read just one.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book.  We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative.

Book Review: Lowcountry Bonfire by Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bonfire
By Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bonfire is book #6 in the Liz Talbot Mystery Series by Susan M. Boyer. All of these books are great, but Lowcountry Bonfire is, I think, the most powerful one yet!

Once again, we are treated to Mama’s wonderful, drool-inducing cooking and Daddy’s antics, which aid in his favorite pastime of getting Mama riled up. Also, there is a bit of after life assistance as Liz and Nate seek to uncover the mysteries of the most recent crime on the island of Stella Maris, South Carolina. They have a few sticky moments that might cause you to hold your breath for a moment or two.

This one kept me wondering for the longest time about who did it and the answer was a definite surprise to me.  The wrap-up on this crime was a very sad one that left me on the verge of tears.  The discovery of “whodunit” was an emotional situation that was very believable. I could see it happening.  The sucker punch was enough to throw anybody over the edge.

There are some bad words in this story, one being the “f” word near the end. There are no really graphic intimate scenes. This book is pretty clean as far as that goes. I like this because when I read a crime caper mystery, it is for the mystery, not for any romance.

Lowcountry Bonfire gets all five stars. If you love a good mystery, you can’t go wrong with this one!

Book Review: Lowcountry Bordello By Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bordello
By Susan M. Boyer

Have you ever read a whodunit book that drags you in early in the story so that you just can’t put it down?  Lowcountry Bordello by Susan M. Boyer is that kind of book.

This is the fourth book in the Liz Talbot Mystery series. This book might well be the best so far.  From the very beginning, there are so many people who could have done it that the reader stays engaged with the story throughout the book.

We feel Lowcountry Bordello rates all five stars.  It is very well-written, spellbinding, and entertaining.

We look forward to reading the next in the series and hope the series will go well beyond the promised sixth book in the series.

The pinnacle of Lowcountry Bordello is so exciting and dramatic that we know any mystery lover will love this series.

When you order your copy of Lowcountry Boil, the first in this series, you should go ahead and order all five of the books that are available so far.  That way you won’t have to wait on the painfully slow next day air delivery.

Book Review: Lowcountry Boneyard By Susan M Boyer

Lowcountry Boneyard
By Susan M Boyer

Wow! is all we can say about Lowcountry Boneyard.  This is a very intriguing and entertaining book.

We love the Liz Talbot books because they are set in our homeplace.  Susan Boyer, the author, is from South Carolina and incorporates a lot of real South Carolina places and even some real South Carolina citizens.

In Lowcountry Boneyard, we are given the facts and suppositions in doses just large enough for us to create our own theories of who done it. Most of the time we are wrong but, the evidence that actually leads up to the criminal is there all along.

This is a great story of how family is supposed to work, and so often doesn’t, alongside another family that just doesn’t work like it should.

We give Lowcountry Boneyard all five stars.  It is masterfully written with all kinds of excitement.  Many mysteries today leave you asking yourself, “Why didn’t such and such happen?”  This is not like that.  The evidence all fits very well together.  There are no loose ends like in some books out there.

Too many fiction writers fall into a predictable rut and readers who have been following the series can guess the outcome early in the book.  So far Boyer has not fallen into that rut.

Lowcountry Boneyard is anything but predictable. We read it straight through, only stopping for a quick bite to eat. You won’t want to put it down, either.

Grab your copy and put on a pot of coffee and enjoy Lowcountry Boneyard.  You will love it.

Book Review: Lowcountry Bombshell by Susan M. Boyer

Lowcountry Bombshell
By Susan M Boyer

We received a review copy of Lowcountry Bombshell for the purpose of writing this review.

Lowcountry Bombshell by Susan M. Boyer is part of the continuing Liz Talbot Mysteries.  Liz is still on the island and cracking cases.  We did not like Lowcountry Bombshell as much as we liked the first book Lowcountry Boil.

In the first book, we had implied sensuality and some profanity but nothing really egregious.  In Lowcountry Bombshell, it was less discrete and more in your face.

The story is interesting and suspenseful. We have to wonder throughout the book what is going to happen next and who done it.

We give Lowcountry Bombshell three stars.  This book is not as interesting as the first book and it is not as Christian-friendly as the first one.

Book Review: Double Whammy by Gretchen Archer

Double Whammy

By Gretchen Archer

Double Whammy is a steady-paced mystery based in the world of casinos.  The main character is a young woman named Davis Way, who is a former police officer.  She takes on a potentially exciting – definitely not dull! - new job in Mississippi.  It quickly becomes clear that not everything is on the up and up.   Trusting anyone is a significant risk.  It seems that you never know who you’re working with or who’s your friend or your enemy.
We wondered throughout how the events in this story would be brought together.
We give this book three stars due to profanity and adult situations.  Although it isn’t particularly graphic, it is obvious what is happening.  Infidelity and violence are also included in this story.
Negative aspects aside, it was an interesting story and one couldn’t help but share in Davis’s frustrations.  If you’re into crime capers, you will find Double Whammy very entertaining.

We were provided a free copy of this book in order to review it.
