September 19-Somethin’ Challenge: Day 18

18. Did you like to roller skate? Did you go to a skating rink or did you skate on the sidewalk/street at home? If you went to the skating rink, did you spend more time skating or socializing?

I fell in love with roller skating at a pretty young age and still love it, even though I'm not brave enough or steady enough to do it anymore.  I used to go every Saturday morning when I was a kid.  Saturday mornings had mostly the child crowd, with a few adults skating, too.  There were two men there that were very nice (not at all creepy) that were wonderful on skates. They could skate backwards, speed skate, dance skate, the works.  It was like they were just gliding across the floor.  Or, as some would say, they were one with the skates and the rink.  I remember one time the younger of the two men (and he was probably my parents' age) skated with me.  I felt so honored that someone as talented as he was on skates would take the time with a little pip squeak like me.   I never did learn to stop with the toe brakes, though.  I always used the carpeted wall around the rink to stop whenever I wanted to stop.  I was afraid that if I tried to stop with the toe brake, I would end up with my face smashed into the floor.
