September 19-Somethin' Challenge: Day 17

17. Do you remember where you were and/or what you were doing when the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded?  This happened on 28 January 1986.  Were there any big events going on in your personal life at the time?

Yes, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing and what big thing was going on in my life at the time.  I was mid-trimester in my first pregnancy.  I was at home cleaning the house. I was standing in front of the entertainment center/bookshelf thingy dusting and straightening things and watching the news.

Then, there it was, big as day, those poor people getting blown to smithereens right in front of America as they looked on and could do nothing about it. I started bawling my eyes out and called David at work to tell him what had happened.  I don't remember what happened immediately after I called him, but I do remember days, weeks, maybe even months, of that scene being played out on the television, a constant reminder of the awful death those poor astronauts endured.  It was probably the most traumatic event in my life that did not involve one of my loved ones.

    1. It is hard for me to believe it. He turned 30 back in June. He is a Chief Petty Officer in the US Navy. We don't say too much about him, really, because he has chosen to not allow us to be a part of his life anymore. We can only hope that some day this will change. All we can do is continue to love, pray for, and be proud of his service to this country.

      Have a great weekend. :)

  3. I was at work that day and we were gathered around a small tv watching it. Everybody was stunned. And yes, I was going through something very big and personal that month which cannot be shared.

    1. This sounds like it wasn't a good big thing. If that is the case, I'm sorry and hope that everything worked out okay. {{{Hugs}}}

      It was a very upsetting day all around.

      My first airplane ride was on or near the year anniversary of the Challenger explosion. That only fueled my fear of being in an airplane. It turned out to be a very exciting ride for me.

      Have a great weekend, Nonnie. :)
