Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 2013: #26

Everyday Ruralty

Questions

Do you enjoy grocery shopping?

No, not really. It is just one of those things that has to be done.

Are you following any particular news stories?

The only news that I really have any interest in watching this time of year is the hurricane news. We live on the Texas Gulf Coast, about 50 miles inland. We learned our lesson back in South Carolina with Hurrican Hugo in 1989. We were over 200 miles inland and were still hit pretty badly. We keep a pretty good eye on it here.

How do you feel about all of the technology we have today? Is it too much, just right, or not enough?

I believe that some of it is just too much; it removes too much of a need to think. Who needs to think when there's an application that can do this or that so that you don't have to? I think that some people would cease to function if all of a sudden today's technology died. Also, for all the "connecting" going on out there, families are more disconnected than they've ever been. Rarely do they sit down and talk anymore; I mean real talking. Folks are too busy Facebooking or yapping or texting on the phone and not engaging with the person across the table from them.

On a scale of 1-10(1 being the least) how much do you worry?

Ten would probably be close to accurate, but I'm working on it. Maybe becoming a Stepford woman would be the way to go. I wouldn't be real, so nothing would faze me.

Without any of your responsibilities or concern with how you would accomplish this, what would your three dream jobs be?

1. A professional genealogist. Those that came before us deserve to be remembered. We are because they were. Good or bad, if it weren't for them, we wouldn't be who we are today. We wouldn't even be here!

2. A memoir writer for hire. I don't want anyone's story to be lost.

3. Being a gospel singer like Sandi Patty. Heavenly Father gave me a song years ago in a dream, but not the memory to hold onto the words, nor the beautiful voice of my dreams to be able to sing it as the angel did in my dream.

This is my favorite Sandi Patty Song: We Shall Behold Him. I've only ever matched notes with her once in my life. I'll never forget it. :)

  1. I know what you mean about hurricane news. I can handle that news without going on an opinionated tirade against the overly opinionated reporter. You spoke of Hugo in 89. Some friends of ours lived in Florence, SC when that came through. They lost so many trees they bought a portable saw mill & built a brand new house! So hurricane news is pretty important this time of year. Have a blessed week :O)

    1. I think that hurricanes can be pretty exciting just trying to figure out where they're really going to go. I like trying to figure out which storms coming off Cape Verde are going to become hurricanes. I agree that reporters can be very aggravating at times. :)

I am glad that your friends were able to get a new house out of the wreckage of Hugo. That is wonderful and quite resourceful. Most of all, I am glad that they survived it.

Thank you for stopping by and commenting. I hope that you have a wonderful week!

  2. I absolutely love Sandi Patty! She is awesome. Her dad (Ron Patty) is an awesome singer too. Quite the voice range. And her mother is an excellent pianist. Very talented people.

    1. I agree that she is awesome. That voice and a sense of humor to boot...she's so blessed and we're blessed by her great music. I didn't know that her daddy was a singer and mother a pianist, too. I'll have to see if I can find their music online as well. Thanks for that information.

It would be wonderful to be able to sing like that. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!

  3. I agree with every word you said about technology! I need to work on the worry thing too. The faster the world goes, the harder it gets. I wasn't anywhere near this bad until I became a mother.

    1. I know what you mean. Things are going so fast that it is hard not to worry.

You're right. Our worries increase when we become mothers. One thing that they forgot to tell us when we became mothers is that the worry isn't over once they turn 18; it is just beginning!

    1. I can't sing in front of other people either. I just can't do it. I love to sing, just not to be heard. I'm shy, too. :)

I was in the teen choir as a kid and loved it, but I don't know what possessed me to sign up for something that I was terrified of doing, especially since I had to sing where others could hear me for the director to decide whether I was alto, soprano, or something else entirely. My mama's opinion was that I couldn't carry a tune in a tin bucket (who could, I mean, really?). They would have had to drug me to get a true solo out of me. haha

I don't sing in the shower...glad to hear that you do! My youngest daughter gives us a concert with every shower that she takes. We love it. :)

    2. I don't know what happened to my original response back to you, Beth. It was a long one and I can't remember everything that I wrote. OY!

I am a very shy person, too, and do not sing in front of or in earshot of other people. However, as a teenager, I was in the teen choir. I don't know what possessed me to sign up for something that terrified me, but I did. I had to sing alone for them to determine whether I was alto, soprano, or something else. I enjoyed being in the choir, but they would have had to drug me for a true solo. :)

  6. I grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast (Orange, TX, to be exact) so hurricanes were a big part of my childhood summers. My dad used to get me my own tracking chart every summer.

I'm with you on the technology, too. I think it has insulated us from true human contact. I kind of like it, but kind of wish it would go away.

    1. Our oldest daughter makes sure to get the tracking charts for us, too. Keeping up with the storms is an exciting part of summer, especially when our only real chance at a vacation is having to evacuate for a hurricane. haha We've only had to evacuate once, though, and that was for Hurricane Rita. Did you ever have to evacuate?

I'm glad that I'm not the only one to feel this way about technology and the true disconnect that it causes. I don't really see it as progress, but an ending.

Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!

  7. I live in Tx but not that close the worst I have to worry about here is the Tornadoes.

    1. The tornadoes on their own are worse than the hurricanes, I think. At least you get warning with a hurricane. A tornado can be on you before you even know there's a problem. There was one here several years back that flattened a barn at the end of our road. One minute it was there, the next it was obliterated.

I'm glad that you don't really have to worry about the hurricanes. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!

    2. I think that tornadoes are a bigger problem than hurricanes. At least a hurricane sends you notice. Tornadoes just show up unannounced, and they don't give you time to glue anything down!

There was a tornado here a few years ago that took out a barn just up the road from our house. One minute the barn was there, the next minute, it had a new address.

  9. One of my fondest memories growing up were Sunday mornings at my grandparents. My granddaddy would put gospel music on the television while we got ready for church and I loved it! Hurricanes. Hate them. But I do have a healthy respect for them. We're in Charleston, SC and were here for Hugo in '89. SCARY.

    1. I bet that made getting ready for church go much more smoothly. :)

My sister was at Coastal Carolina University when Hurricane Hugo hit and pregnant with her first baby. We were worried sick about her, especially since it was so bad on us so far inland, too.

I'm glad that you survived that scary storm! Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!
