Update on Prayer Request

valentines-day-3983300_640

As you all know, on Valentine's Day, David's sister had open heart surgery. The surgery went well. However, on Friday she was dealing with some serious complications, including a collapsed lung. She was put into a medically-induced coma.

The message that we received earlier today from David's mother said that Sandra's blood pressure had come down some and that they were awaiting the lung x-ray results. She was doing some better and they had her sitting up.

Thank you for continued prayers for her and for their family. We all appreciate the prayers very much.

Have a blessed weekend.

Prayers, Please

heart-700141_640

I would like to ask all of you to pray for David's sister, Sandra. She had open heart surgery yesterday. The surgery itself went well, as we understand it. However, this morning there are some severe complications, severe enough that she is in an induced coma.

Please pray for her healing, also for comfort and strength for her family, especially their mama, for whatever lies ahead.

Thank you.

Press Release: The Aging Brain: A Road Map for Keeping A Sharp Mind Into Old Age

man-1284515_640

The Aging Brain: A Road Map for Keeping A Sharp Mind Into Old Age

Chattanooga, TN, February 27, 2018 ― Growing older is inevitable, but many of the afflictions associated with old age—including dementia, disability and increased dependence on others—don't have to be. So if you could, would you choose to break the mold of aging?

Psychiatrist and international speaker Timothy R. Jennings, M.D., may have some insights. Dr. Jennings prescribes simple, everyday actions we all can take to stave off disease, promote vitality, and prevent dementia and late-onset Alzheimer's. "The choices we make now can help us to keep our minds sharp and maintain our independence as we age,” says Jennings.

An easy-to-use guide to maintaining brain and body health throughout life, The Aging Brain is based on solid, up-to-date scientific research, and the interventions discussed may help prevent progression toward dementia, even in those already showing signs of mild cognitive impairment. The recommendations also may help reduce disability and depression.

"This book isn't just for people hoping to slow the aging process,” says Jennings. "It's also for anyone who is a caregiver to someone at risk of or already beginning to suffer from dementia. It offers a hopeful, healthy way forward.”

Jennings, who maintains a private practice in Chattanooga, TN, has authored several books, including The God-Shaped Brain and The God-Shaped Heart. He has spent more than two decades researching the interface between biblical principles and modern brain science. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and Life Fellow of the Southern Psychiatric Association, Jennings is president and founder of Come and Reason Ministries.

The Questions and the Answers

1. Are you currently operating at 100% capacity? If not, what % are you? What's keeping you there?

No, I am not operating anywhere near 100%. After the extended hospital/nursing home stay, I was very depleted. Now, with a major heart-ripper going on, I have absolutely nothing left, mentally, physically, nor emotionally.

2. Have you done your taxes? Planned/booked a summer holiday? Thought about or started your 'spring cleaning'? Besides what's listed here, tell us one task that needs doing before spring rolls around.

David handles the taxes and is very efficient so, yes, they are done. No summer holiday in the plans. Decluttering will continue. I had started “spring cleaning” before we left for the hospital in December. I don’t have anything that needs to be done specifically before spring gets here. It just needs to get done!

3. What's a favorite food from your part of the country?

Shrimp! But, that would be a favorite of mine no matter what part of the country I was in!

4. This isn't a leap year, but let's run with it anyway...look before you leap, a leap of faith, grow by leaps and bounds, leap to conclusions, leap at the opportunity...which phrase might best be applied to your life currently (or recently)? Explain.

“A leap of faith” comes the closest of all of the choice and that is because we need to hold desperately to our faith right now that everything is going to be okay. Right now, everything is not okay, and is the farthest it has ever been from okay. I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow. I have to keep holding on to that.

5. As the month draws to a close list five fun and/or fabulous things (large or small) you noticed or experienced in February.

After the heartbreaking things that have gone on this month, this is going to be a very difficult one for me to answer. I am going to try…

1. Funny - I just looked at the calendar behind my computer and noticed that it is still on January.
2. Fabulous - The waiting and watching for the wildflowers is on!
3. Fun - My Twitter feed is getting more attention. I don’t know what has perked it up, but whatever it is, I hope it keeps it up.
4. Fabulous - David’s foot is looking better and better.
5. Better than fabulous! - While going through some boxes that have been packed up since we lived in South Carolina, I finally found my Glamour Shots pictures from way back when I was 31 years old (February 1997). This gives me hope that I might soon recover our photo album that I haven’t seen since we left South Carolina. See, I had little unpackers that kept going behind me undoing things as I was packing for the move out here to Texas, so nothing is/was in the boxes where I initially packed them. Each box is a surprise.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.
Frank Herbert

706px-The_Scream

The second line of this quote stands out to me because I know it to be true. Right now, my mind feels dead and totally useless to me. So much has happened over this last month that I just can’t fathom and I don’t know how to deal with it. Heavenly Father will get us through it, but recovering my mind? I don’t know if that will ever happen. They say we only use 10% of our brain. What happens when something really big and scary comes and takes away even that 10%?

Guest Post: 5 Reasons Why Seniors Should Volunteer at a Church Nursery

5 Reasons Why Seniors Should Volunteer at a Church Nursery

boy-20233_640

The sound of a child’s laugh delights many people, but did you know that it may also be good for your mental health? The average adult laughs just 15 times a day, while children laugh as many as 500 times in a 24-hour time frame. Science shows that laughter is contagious and can improve your physical and mental health, so spending time with happy children may benefit you. Aside from making each other chuckle, there are numerous other perks associated with volunteering in your church’s nursery. Here are five of our favorites.

Enjoy Time With Little Ones When Grandchildren Live Far Away

If your grandchildren don’t live in the area or a hectic schedule prevents you from seeing them as often as you’d like, you can bond with other children in the nursery. Obviously these children aren’t a replacement for your grandkids, but they can help you forget about the ache in your heart that you feel when your family isn’t around.

Get to Know Other Senior Citizens

Make new friends by volunteering in your church’s nursery. In addition to meeting young men and women, you may have the chance to connect with fellow seniors. Increase your chances of meeting older adults by volunteering during times when seniors frequent the church, such as early-morning yoga classes or midday Bible studies. If your church doesn’t offer childcare during these times, talk to the youth group leader or pastor. The church might be willing to open the nursery during the day if enough parents and volunteers are interested.

Remain Mobile

It’s no secret that aches and pains often plague the elderly, but that’s not an excuse to eliminate physical activity. Volunteering in a nursery helps you remain mobile, especially since you’ll probably end up chasing after energetic kiddos as they play.

It’s important to remain active as a senior. Seniors who are rarely mobile spend more time visiting medical professionals than active seniors, and they’re also more likely to need prescription drugs.

Just be careful not to overdo it while you’re playing with the kids. If you have a bad back, don’t offer to give piggyback rides. If your knees ache, be careful not to kneel on the floor for extended periods of time. Talk to your doctor about your volunteer work for specific recommendations.

Brighten the Lives of Children

Although many parents do the best they can to raise their kids, there are still children who feel unwanted or do not receive much attention from adults. Volunteering in a nursery with babies and toddlers can bring joy to your life, but it can also benefit the kids you work with.

You can strengthen or improve kids’ self-esteem by spending quality time with them at church. You can also act as a role model by showcasing appropriate behavior for little ones. If kids do not receive much attention at home, you can let them know they are loved by engaging in fun activities with them at church.

Improve Your Well-Being

Volunteering with children gives you a sense of purpose, which may help you feel healthier and happier (and less apt to turn to bad habits). Research shows a connection between volunteer work and a decreased rate of mortality. Simply put, you might live longer if you volunteer in your church’s nursery.

Spending time with children may require you to memorize songs and dances, and you might have to learn the rules for kid-friendly board games. It also requires creativity, as little ones may expect you to cook fake food in their play kitchen or pretend you’re a superhero. All of this can help keep you mentally active as you age.

Volunteering in a nursery is beneficial for children, but it can also have a positive impact on your life. Talk to a leader at your religious center to learn how you can make a difference in the lives of local children by committing to volunteer work.

Billy Graham: Apostle of Changed Lives and Second Chances

Christian History Magazine Issue #111 Features: Guest Editor, David Neff; Author, Grant Wacker and
Fellow Historians Chronicle the Life of the World's Best Known Evangelist for Christ
Worcester, PA, February, 23 2018 -- Christian History Institute (CHI), a quarterly magazine series, published a special edition of Christian History - issue #111, titled: Billy Graham - Apostle of changed lives and second chances, originally released in 2014. Christian History magazine continues to publish informative and entertaining history, now alongside its companion website, christianhistorymagazine.org.

In this issue #111, Christian History magazine's guest editorial consultant, Grant Wacker, a Duke Divinity School professor and author of America's Pastor: Billy Graham and the Shaping of a Nation, leads a team of distinguished historians and writers who tell the epic story of Mr. Graham's life and career, a unique contribution to the character and spirit of the evangelical church, the nation and the world. The issue's 10 articles, rare archive photos and intimate writing style documents the life and family of Billy Graham, who has personally shared the salvation message of Jesus Christ with more people than any other individual in history.

Guest editor, David Neff, former editor of Christianity Today, has assembled the talents and expertise of several leading historians and writers, to capture the essence of the life and times of America's most prominent religious figure, Billy Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association ministry (BGEA). Outstanding among many central themes associated with Mr. Graham in the issue, and lasting throughout his career, is his core preaching message focused on belief in Jesus and the believer's life, lived in faith and holiness.

In addition to Graham's primary message of salvation in Christ, the issue's contributors have identified and examined many of Graham's famous milestones and associations that have helped to shape the Graham legacy. These themes include:
  • The 1949 Los Angles tent revival, that garnered the attention of the newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, who urged his editor to pay attention to Graham
  • Graham's use of television and radio that positioned him in the living rooms of millions of Americans, where he introduced the values of evangelical Protestantism
  • His commitment to world evangelism that took him throughout Europe, the Far East and Africa as an ambassador of Christ
  • His interest and gift as a confidant to presidents, prime ministers and statesmen that made him a cultural influence in over 150 countries, 49 of which hosted his mass meetings that reached, in the aggregate, billions of listeners and millions of believers
  • Graham's marriage to Ruth Bell which inspired men, women and families to a deepened personal faith life and encouraged future family and relationship ministries
  • His intellectual engagement with education leaders and students that spawned seminaries, colleges and universities, helping shape a worldwide evangelical movement and revival
  • His pioneering vision for racial integration that inspired the American civil rights movement - in 1953, he shockingly removed ropes that separated his audience by color - and in association with Howard Jones, a full-time BGEA associate
  • Graham's uncompromising stand for ethics and morality, setting strict rules for his own behavior and that of ministry associates, which helped prevent moral scandal and compromise that destroyed many other ministry leaders and organizations
"No man has had more personal, one-on-one, impact for faith in Jesus Christ than Mr. Graham," said Michael Austin, a Christian commentator and spokesperson for Christian History magazine. "He and his family are a living testimony to the faithfulness of the Biblical message he so clearly delivered from the start of his ministry. Billy Graham's impact for good in this world is incalculable."

Organizations, mentioned and profiled in the issue, which played pivotal roles in shaping Billy Graham, as well as the BGEA ministry, include: Youth for Christ; Christian Businessmen's Committee; Navigators; Christian Endeavor; Decision Magazine and Christianity Today, both of which Graham helped found; National Association of Evangelicals; Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization, more commonly known as The Lausanne Movement; Samaritan's Purse (directed by Graham's son, Franklin Graham, CEO, BGEA); Fuller Seminary and Gordon-Conwell Seminary (both co-founded by Graham). These Institutions demonstrate and promote, with passion, the themes Graham expounded throughout his ministry career - living a life of faith and holiness - the pathway to eternal salvation in Christ.

To honor Rev. Graham, CHM has dedicated an issue to his life, his ministry, and his legacy for a reduced price of $3.99 until March 22. For purchases of 10 or more copies the price is $1.99 per issue.

Christian History magazine issues, each of which focuses on a single subject, are intended as a study guide and personal reader for the home, schools, and church libraries. Its companion website, www.christianhistorymagazine.org, includes CHI's entire archive of all 125 issues, downloadable files and multi-media features that are packed with information designed for fast and easy access. Programmed to serve as a self-study library or virtual encyclopedia of the Christian historic record, CHI makes a vast storehouse of reliable Christian history, easily accessible through the website's downloadable study guides and support material.

Christian History Institute (CHI) is a non-profit Pennsylvania corporation founded in 1982. CHI publishes Christian History magazine and also produces books and videos featuring important Christian history, including Torchlighters®, an animated history series for children. CHI is a donor-supported organization that provides church history resources and self-study material aiming to make Christian history accessible to the widest possible audience, through video and the internet. My favorite president was Ronald Reagan. I liked him because he seemed to be genuine and an all-around nice guy. He didn’t appear the least bit arrogant or uppity to me.

This weekend, I have plans to finish losing the rest of my sanity, whether I want to or not.

I love my Zoomie. He is officially 100% mine now. :)

I believe that Jesus loves me and I need to sing that song a lot right now. Holding tightly to 2 Timothy 1:7:
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Book Review: My Cells Made Me Do It by Robin R. Hayes

My Cells Made Me Do It by Robin R. Hayes

This is not the type of book we normally read. If we were looking on Amazon, we would smirk and think, “cute title” but that is as far as that would go. However, we were sent a copy of My Cells Made Me Do It to review and it fell within our normal guidelines, so we read it. We have to say this is one of the most interesting and fascinating books we have reviewed in a while.

This isn’t the kind of book one just plows through. One must stop and think about what the author means and the implications of what he is saying. It is a different world.

The book is extremely entertaining, if one could ever call a book on cellular biology entertaining. It touches on just about every field in the sciences one could imagine. It does so in a very intriguing way.

My Cells Made Me Do It is not some long-haired book that only academics can enjoy. It is a book for us poor, dumb, rednecks who are still fascinated by trying to figure out if the light really does go off in the refrigerator when we close the door.

If you are a science major, this book may very well help you to understand better what you are studying. If you are the kind of person whose only interaction with a science book recently was to use one to squish a spider, you will love it, too. By the way, it does work well for squishing spiders, too. We tried that out.

We give My Cells Made Me Do It all five stars. We enjoyed it immensely. You will, too.

We were sent a complimentary copy of this book. We are under no obligation to write any review, positive or negative. We are disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255.

  2. My zodiac sign is ___________________.
  3. Income tax season ___________________.

Here are my responses:

My Chinese zodiac animal sign is the snake, which I think is incredibly funny because *someone* I know isn’t particularly fond of snakes. .

My zodiac sign is Leo, and the description fits me in a lot of ways. Other ways, not so much.

Income tax season usually is a good thing for us. People call David for help and he is usually able to help them out of whatever mess they might be in. One of those somebodies is going to bake us a coconut pie. :)

In hindsight, I never should have tried going back to college. It cost money that we didn’t (and don’t) have. It did not help my self-esteem issues to be called “abnormal” because I am an introvert. It just left us broker and me feeling even worse about myself (and deepened my introversion!). Besides, our health issues have removed opportunities to use what I was learning anyway. I would have been better off fighting it through on my own in regards to learning what I wanted to learn. YouTube has lots of educational videos and there is a plethora of websites discussing anything that I would want to learn. AND I can watch/read those on my own time table!

Have a blessed weekend, y’all!

Rising on the Wings of the Dawn by Simon R. Ninsiima

If you need to have your faith revived, then Rising on the Winds of the Dawn by Simon R. Ninsiima will do it.

This is a very interesting and detailed story of a little boy in Uganda who gets polio and his family’s strong Christian faith.

We are painted a picture of the author’s early life, before polio, and then all of the struggles, hardship, and pain he and his family went through after polio.

Here are the fill-ins:

1. The Winter Olympics _____.
2. I think the most romantic movie (or book) is _____.
3. Recently, I had an odd experience when _____.
4. I believe that love _____.

Here are my responses:

The Winter Olympics isn’t something that I will be watching, but of the sports involved, figure skating is my favorite. I wish that I could do that!

The most romantic movie or book is a difficult one for me. I don’t really get into romance movies or books. So, I took a different perspective on the word “romantic”.

Merriam-Webster has this as one of the definitions of “romantic”:

4 a : marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of what is heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized

With that definition in mind, I chose two of my favorite Christmas holiday movies: It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. Both meet the definition above AND include the more traditional view of romance, with the lead characters being either engaged or married by the end of the movies.

I can’t really think of an “odd” experience lately, other than one that was incredibly embarrassing. I have been visited (walked in on) in the bathroom a zillion times over the last 30+ years, since we started having babies. While David was at the nursing home, a young man that I did NOT issue forth walked in on me. That was odd in that it has never happened before. With any luck, it will never happen again!

I believe that love can be at first sight. That is how it worked for me! The first time I looked across the courtyard and saw David’s eyes looking back across the courtyard, I knew I loved him. I was just too terrified to talk to him. haha

Product Review: Tea Tree Oil Shampoo

Tea Tree Oil Shampoo

We were given a free sample of this cruelty-free Tea Tree Oil Shampoo by Maple Holistics to try and see what we thought.

We are impressed. It has a pleasant smell, although it may be a little strong for those with serious breathing issues.

It works really well and has a mild tingly sensation. This was not overpowering. We think anyone looking for a great cruelty-free shampoo should try this tea tree oil shampoo.

While nothing specific comes to mind at the moment, this is generally my idea when it comes to driving around here. Slow, steady, and alive, beats fast, maniacal, and crashed into a concrete barrier anytime, as far as I’m concerned!

The speed limit here in most places is at least 60 mph. In some areas, it is 75 mph. I don’t need to get anywhere bad enough to go 75 mph. For one thing, it is dangerous, and for another, it sucks the gas out of the car much too fast. Usually, I drive between 55 and 65, depending on what traffic is around me, and the condition of the road I am on and, of course, the posted speed limit.

2. 'As slow as molasses'...Do you like molasses? How about maple syrup? Caramel? Butterscotch? What's your favorite of the slow-moving treats mentioned here, and what's your favorite food made with that sweet treat?

I like all of those mentioned. My teeth don’t appreciate the sweet treat, but the rest of me sure does! I can’t pick a favorite. I like them on different things. I like pancakes with maple syrup. I like buttered toast with molasses. I like caramel on most anything, but especially apples, though I can no longer eat them the way they were intended to be eaten. I also like the little butterscotch-flavored hard candies.

3. Your favorite slow song?

While I don’t know the exact one that would absolutely win a lifetime achievement award in my book (I can’t choose just one!), one of my favorite slow songs is “Are You Lonesome Tonight” by Elvis Presley, my 7th cousin, 1x removed. Yes, there is a story attached to that song, but this post would be way too long if I told it. I’ll save it for the Master Story-teller. A little bird tells me that he chose that song, too.

4. Your favorite thing to make in a slow cooker or crock pot?

Roast beef with carrots, potatoes, broccoli, garlic, and onions is probably my favorite thing to cook in a crockpot/slow-cooker.

5. 'You may delay, but time will not.' ~Benjamin Franklin Are you more a hurrier or a delayer when it comes to unpleasant tasks that need doing? What are you currently either delaying or hurrying to get through this week or month?

I am both, depending on the situation involved. When it is something that I really, really want to do, I’m all “come on already!”. With things that I don’t want to do, I usually want to go ahead and get it over with, but sometimes I am a heavy-duty procrastinator. When I am overwhelmed, which is very often lately, I tend to procrastinate, I guess hoping that whatever is overwhelming me will just go away. It doesn’t generally. Usually more things come along to add to the overwhelm.

I guess I am hurrying to get to the wildflowers and maybe the mountains and delaying on this stack of books that I need to read and review.  How can I concentrate on reading when there are flowers out there calling for me?

6. Tell us three things you encounter regularly or even just occasionally that you find to be annoyingly slow.

Fast food drive-thrus
Red lights
Doctor appointments

7. March is National Craft Month. Are you crafty? Tell us about something crafty you'll try in the next thirty-one days. Or something crafty you'd like to try or wish you had the skill to make happen.

I will try to get a good bit done on the Grandmother’s Flower Garden crocheted afghan that I’m working on.

Also, I am going to try my hand at photography with a reverse-mounted lens and see what happens with that.

And, once the tree part gets delivered to me, I am going to try my hand at making a clock from a part of one of the trees that the Valentine’s Day tornadoes ripped up at the local college here where our kids started their college careers.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Something was shared with me earlier that really irks me to no end. There is evidently this thought out there that shy people cannot learn. While I realize that asking questions can be a good way to learn, so can listening. Being loud and out there on display isn’t the only way and sometimes that “out there-ness” gets in the way of learning. Just because someone is bashful and/or introverted doesn’t mean that their brains are turned off, that they aren’t listening, that they are incapable of learning. Not everyone has to be loud and obnoxious to learn something. If everyone is on stage putting on a show, who is going to be the audience?

How about celebrating our differences rather than belittling me because I am not like you?
Heavenly Father made us both. He made me, so who are you to decide that I am worthless, or incapable, or inadequate?

Product Review: myCharge Portable Charger

myCharge Portable Charger

Recently we were sent a myCharge HubPlus portable charger free of charge or obligation so that we might review it on our blog.
We put this little charger through an ultimate test.  It came just in time for us to put it through a major challenge.  We were asked to help a friend.  This meant that we would be at his place of business anywhere from nine to eleven plus hours at a time.  Due to the nature of his building and his heavy demand for electricity, he has multiple surge protectors plugged into outlets and chained together.  There simply was not an available outlet that was not already overloaded.
This is where the myCharge HubPlus came in so handy.  We had some time to kill while we were helping with his business, so we took our Kindle e-readers with us.  We also had an iPhone 5s and an older flip phone along with a Bayer Contour Next blood glucose monitor.  All needed to be charged along the way.  The myCharge HubPlus was able to provide for our month of charging needs without ever running completely out of charge.
We would charge it at night using the attached AC prongs.  Throughout the day, it provided for our charging needs.  This device allows the user to charge an iPhone using the attached lightning cable as well as a Kindle or older phone using the attached micro USB cable.  It also has a USB port so that almost any device that has a USB charging cable can be charged.
The device even comes pre-charged so it is ready to go when you take it out of the box.
We were very impressed by the small size of this charger and how well it worked.  We have discussed buying this product to give to our kids.
