A to Z April Challenge: S is for Snakes

I love nature photography of all types, most especially flowers. Sometimes, though, nature gives me special living, breathing surprises while I'm on the hunt for flowers to photograph.

Here is a not-so-little surprise that I found in our backyard back in June 2009. He (or she) posed for me like modeling was its day job. I wasn't scared of it and it didn't seem to be scared of me either. I believe the ID that we got on this snake was that it was a broadband water snake. It wasn't a poisonous snake, though I didn't know whether it was or wasn't at the time. I just wanted to take its picture. :)

We've had other snakes grace our yard with their presence. On at least two occasions there have been coral snakes. Boy, are those things fast! On another day, there was a juvenile copperhead that was way too near our dog Shep. It blended in with the dirt very well. There have been others during our ten years here on the Texas Gulf Coast, even one slithering through our kitchen. So far, we've been very blessed that none of us have been bitten by one.

Snakes love plain M&Ms.

What about you? Have you ever been bitten by a snake? Have you ever seen a snake in your yard or house? Finally, are you afraid of snakes?

    1. That is understandable. They can be dangerous and there are lots of poisonous snakes around here.

I don't remember ever being really scared of them, but I hadn't really had much occasion to be until we moved out here. I've seen more here in the last 10 years that I ever did in my 39 years back in South Carolina.

I figure if I approach them with caution and maybe a long lens! and don't move fast, everything will be okay. So far, so good.

  2. I have never been bitten by a snake. I saw a snake in my yard only once when I was living in a rural region about twenty years ago. I am afraid of snakes, and I don't want to encounter one when I am alone.

    1. I am glad that you've never been bitten by one. My husband's nephew has been bitten several times. I hope that you don't ever encounter one alone either.

  3. I have never found a snake in our yard, and I'm glad, because we would have to move. So, yes, I am afraid of them. :-)

    1. Thank you for the kind comment on my photos as well as being a new follower. I am a new follower of yours, too. :)

You saying you'd have to move if you saw a snake in your yard reminds me of a funny story that happened to my husband and I when we were working in a convenience store. We're in a sort of rural area of our town. A snake got into the store and was slithering around under this shelf and especially liked the shelf with the M&Ms. One of the lady customers jumped straight up and landed on the counter. The male customers, many of them gang-bangers, wouldn't even come into the store once they found out a snake was in there. Here they are, big, tough, knife toting guys, and they were asking me to go into the store to get their beer/cigarettes, etc. for them. They were too scared to enter the store! That makes me laugh to this day. It was kind of hard to be scared of these "tough" guys after that. :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!
