Sick Computer

My computer appears to be having some serious problems and may not be salvageable.  I am making this post from my phone, but that probably won't happen often. I need to figure out how to increase the text size on my phone so that I can see what I am typing!

David has generously offered me the use of his laptop computer, but it has the Windows 8 operating system and does not like me. The feeling is mutual.

Please be in prayer for the University of Houston community. A dorm student has committed suicide. Please also pray especially for this student's family.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Challenge Day 15: My daddy, Jimmy Ray Gunter, died of a heart attack. Daddy had just had his 71st birthday 6 days before. My father-in-law, Robert Bruce McClendon, Jr., died of a dissecting aneurysm of the aorta. He was only 52 years old. There are many cardiac events sprinkled across our family history.

Our oldest daughter has Marfan Syndrome, which itself comes with a multitude of heart issues. My husband has Marfanoid Syndrome. He met most, but not all, of the criteria for Marfan Syndrome. There is nothing that we can do to prevent Marfan Syndrome to my knowledge, but there are things that we can do to help protect the heart. Eating healthy foods, the more natural, unprocessed, the better, and we can exercise at a safe level for our individual bodies. Avoiding alcohol abuse and not smoking can also help protect our hearts and other organs as well as those of our loved ones.

Remember the Veterans

"Freedom is never free."
Author Unknown

Today is Veteran's Day. We should remember those that have died in service and honor those that are serving or have served in the military. In honor of those who have given their lives for our freedom, there will be a ceremony honoring the veterans at the courthouse square. Here is a photo of the local veteran's memorial.

One of the local veterinarians in town also has a flag display, along with a message on their sign.

While you're out and about, how about shaking a veteran's hand and thanking him (or her) for his service to our country?

Photographing Trees

I am still trying to learn how to use the camera on my smart phone. It is pretty bad when a phone is smarter than its user. :)

Some of the pictures are coming out looking like impressionistic images instead of regular photographs. I guess that is because I do not know how to properly use the zoom feature and they were shot in low-light situations. Anyway, I decided that I would go with that thought and play around with the pictures in Photoshop and Painter to try to get an even more impressionistic feel from the images.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this image. I have a zillion more to play with!

31 Days in the Moment - All Grown Up and Voting!

31 October 2014

Today was a memorable day!

Maggie was able to vote for the very first time, thanks to early voting here in our town. 100% of our household is voting age now and that gives me some misty moments. It means that all of our children are over 18 years old, no longer babies.

Maggie was sad that she wasn't able to vote in 2012 when Davey voted for the first time. His first vote was the presidential election. She wanted so much for them to vote together. They've done most everything together over the course of their lives, such as baking cakes in the kitchen floor and the peanut butter dance. Although she is thirteen months younger than Davey, they graduated high school together, started college together, and had hoped to graduate college together. Davey went to the Marines instead and now she doesn't plan to walk for the graduation ceremony when she graduates next spring/summer.

But, for today, she was happy that she was finally able to vote!

31 Days in the Moment - Check Your Engines!

30 October 2014

An engine should purr, sure. But, this time of year our vehicle's engine could be purring for an entirely different reason.

As the weather gets cooler, little animals, especially kitties, like to crawl under the hood to get out of the wind and to warm themselves on our vehicle's engines. Over the last week or so, our little kitty, Yang, has found it to be the perfect spot to warm up on these cool mornings and a safe place to escape the neighborhood tom cats. It is, however, quite distressing to me!

I am afraid that one morning I will forget to check and we'll have a chewed up kitty. For most of the last week, I have opened the hood to find Yang sitting on the battery. Today, however, Yang was sitting right on the middle of the engine!

Please, please, before you crank your car in the mornings, take a moment to open the hood and check to be sure that you don't have any unexpected passengers warming themselves in your engine compartment!
