Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Let's talk holiday decorating. On a scale of 1-10 where do you fall? (1=Scrooge and 10= Clark Griswold). What's your favorite corner-room-table-space to decorate? Is it done?

I am not sure where I would be on the scale. I don't like all the flashy, hey we're in Vegas, gaudy things that I see in some places. I like the red ribbons, green garland, white lights, and sparkle. I think it has to do with the fact that I can't focus if there is too much visual noise.

The only decorating that we do is a Christmas tree and we even skipped that one year.

2. Is there a nativity scene in your decorating somewhere? Post a picture or, if it's special to you in some way, tell us why. Or do both-it's Christmas!

I love nativity scenes and would love to have one, but the wild animals in this neighborhood would just tear it up if we had one outside. We don't have a mantel or a hearth, so there's no really good place to put one inside either.

I have seen some crochet patterns for cute little nativity scenes. I might get brave enough to try those someday.

3. Do you live in a social neighborhood? If so are you glad? If not do you wish you did?

Our neighbors all around us entertain fairly often, but the neighbors for the most part are not socializing with each other. We say howdy, etc., but "playing together" just isn't happening. Everyone is busy doing their own thing. I'm fine with that.

The neighborhood where I grew up was a social one, at least amongst the children, and that was great back then.  I am much more of a loner these days, so am fine with the social level as it is here.

4. As the saying goes, 'there's no time like the present'. How does that ring true in your life right now?

The present is all that we have. Our mortality has been slapping us in the face lately. We know that if we don't do this or that now, we may never get to do it. There is a sense of urgency in our household these days.

5. Do you dread Mondays? Why or why not?

Yes, because I don't know what news the doctor will give us each time we go. The constant hospital/medical facility trips are just one more loud knock on that mortality door.

6. Poinsettia, Christmas Cactus, Amaryllis-which on the list is your favorite holiday plant? Are any of these on display in your home right now?

None of these are in our home, but I love them all, especially the poinsettia. Unfortunately, as I understand it, it is a poisonous plant for pets as well as humans. We don't have little kids here now, but we do have our grand-dogger and Petra might try to eat it. We don't want to risk it.

7. Share a favorite quote from a Christmas movie.

There are several: "I thought so!" ~ Natalie Wood as Susan (Miracle on 34th Street), upon basically being told "Try, try again."

"That's what this hearing will decide." Santa Claus (Miracle on 34th Street) at the committal hearing.

"Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" ~ Clarence the Angel, It's a Wonderful Life

Mary as a little girl: "Is this the ear you can't hear on? George Bailey, I'll love you 'til the day I die." (It's a Wonderful Life)

Conversation between George and Mary Bailey: "George: Your, your, your, ba- Mary, you on the nest?" Mary: "George Baily Lassos Stork!"

There are so many more! As you can see, I can't pin it down to just one. 

8. Insert your own random thought here.

"I know what I'm gonna do tomorrow, and the next day, and the next year, and the year after that." ~George Bailey, It's a Wonderful Life.

In many ways, George's life mirrors my own.  I can relate to his situation.  He had hopes. He had dreams. He knew what he wanted. Then, life happened, like it does with the rest of us. Heavenly Father has other plans for us that we can't see or see but don't understand. Other folks have other plans for us. Our own plans get pushed aside and life goes on. Somehow we get to a point of growing into the lives that we are meant to live. Like George, we just have to come to the realization that, no matter how bad it may seem on the surface, so long as there is love, it truly is a wonderful life.

  3. Your neighborhood sounds much like ours. It's very different from the previous ones we've lived in. We live on a pretty busy road, so that makes it nearly impossible to get to know folks well. Enjoy your day!

    1. Thankfully, the road right in front of our house isn't particularly busy. There is a farm-to-market road behind us that is pretty busy, so we hear the traffic from that.

In a fast-paced environment, it would be hard to get to know folks. Everyone is just too busy. David and I are the odd couple here. Most everyone either has little kids of their own or they are grandparents already. Our kids are grown and we don't have grand-kids yet. So, we're just the random old couple you hear about. :)

  4. Oh I loved reading all the Christmas quotes and had forgotten many. A pretty silk poinsettia might be just the answer for your dilemma. Merry Christmas!

    1. That is a great suggestion! I hadn't even thought of silk poinsettias. I'll have to look into that.

  5. I prefer simple decorations at Christmas too. I'm sure it's a challenge to keep anxiety at bay with weekly appointments, and the unknown ahead, but am so glad you have your faith to keep you strong. Take care.

    1. Thanks Joyce. Hopefully we're on the downhill run with these weekly appointments. It really depends on that new place that opened up in the ankle of his other leg. We'll see how that goes. Yes, I know whatever happens, Heavenly Father already has it covered and I am thankful for that.

  6. I'm more of a loner too, Suzanne. And that is okay!! You gave me some ideas on which movies to watch for Christmas. Good answers today!!

    1. Thanks, Paula. Some folks think loners are weird, but not all of us are psychopath serial killers. :)

I hope that you'll enjoy the Christmas movies. I've always loved these movies.

  7. I am late today...forgot to hit post before we left for the clinic...spent a lot of time there but Mr BC managed to stay out of the hospital. You are right it is a wonderful life.

    1. No worries. :) I am beginning to think that my new nickname should be "Always late" because I'm not getting anything done on time these days. There's just too much going on and I am pretty well overwhelmed.

I am sorry that Mr. BC is having some health problems. I hope that he is going to be okay. I am glad that he was able to avoid a hospital admission and hope that stays the case!

  8. I love the movie, It's a Wonderful Life, but I haven't watched it in years, I cry too much during it. I can't decide if I pity George Bailey or admire him.

    1. I think that I do both, pity and admire him. He planned for so much more out of his life, but is a trooper and deals with what is before him. I can both sympathize and empathize with him. It makes me cry in my heart, too. I understand his frustration. Sometimes it turns out that what we thought we wanted, isn't all its cracked up to be. And what we didn't know we wanted is what makes us the happiest and most fulfilled. We just need a new pair of eyes to see it, sometimes.

  9. We pretty much just say howdy to our neighbors too. Love the original "Miracle on 34th St." and yes it is so sweet when Mary says that to George.

    1. Are your neighbors nice ones?

I think what she says is just the sweetest thing. Imagine being so young and already knowing who is meant for you. That is just great. :)

I think my very favorite part of the original "Miracle on 34th Street" is when Santa is talking with the little Dutch girl. The awe on Natalie Wood's face is wonderful. It is almost like she wasn't acting, but was truly in awe. I think the little Dutch girl is just the cutest thing with her missing front teeth and such a pretty smile.
