Wednesday Hodgepodge - 17 August 2016

1. I read here four creative activities to try this month. They were-calligraphy, make your own cookbook, dance or learn a new type of dance, and letter writing. Which activity on the list appeals to you most? Will you add it to your August?

Letter writing and calligraphy appeal to me the most.  I used to be able to do calligraphy and would love to do it again, but my hands are so shaky that it wouldn't turn out very pretty.  It is highly unlikely that I will be adding calligraphy to my list any time soon, but letter writing is doable.  I've been meaning to write to one of my aunts anyway.

2. Bertrand Russell is quoted as saying, 'To be without some of the things you want is an indispensable part of happiness.' Agree or disagree? Explain.

I think that I would be happier if I had all of the things that I wanted, but I think that I get the point that he is making.   Not having it leaves something for us to look forward to and to work toward.  If I had everything that I wanted, with no exceptions, what would I do?  What effort would need to be made?

3. August 17th is National Thriftshop Day...are you a 'thrifter'? If so, tell us about one of your best or favorite finds.

I wouldn't be classified as a thrifter, but I don't mind shopping at thrift stores and antique stores.  I think it is great to be able to find practically brand new things (some still with the price tags on them) for next to nothing.  One of my favorite finds that I can remember is a wedding dress that we bought for a photography prop.   It was beautiful.  I think it actually was bought at the antique store, but it was at a thrift store price.

4. On a scale of 1-10 (with 1= almost none and 10=loads) how would you rate your sense of wanderlust? What kicks your wanderlust into high gear?

How about a 20?  I would love to go somewhere.  The last time we went on a trip of any significance was in 2005 and we had to evacuate for Hurricane Rita.  We counted it as a vacation. It was a blast. I don't know what in particular kicks it into high gear.  I think it stays in high gear.

But, if I can't go somewhere really cool or of historical significance or family history-related or loaded with photographic opportunities, then I'd rather just stay here at home.

5. Has life felt more like a marathon or sprint so far this month? How so?

Maggie's visit seems to be flying by, but overall, this month seems to be crawling by.   Nothing is fast and done; there's always something hanging over my head to be done.  So, I guess a marathon is the answer to this question.

6. What do you need to get a jump on before fall officially arrives?

There's nothing on my "have to do" list that has to be done by the fall specifically.

7. What's the last thing you did with friends or family where you lost track of time?

David and I lose track of time often while working on blog posts and maintenance.  Other than that, I can't think of anything.  For the most part, keeping track of time isn't something that we worry about.  We do whatever when we want to.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Please pray for all of our military folks and for the families that are worried for their safety.

  1. My hubs was retired for a while and we used to wake up and have to really think about what day of the week it was. Now that he's back working it's easy to identify the weekends : ) Have a great day. Our country and the men and women who serve in our military and police forces are at the top of my prayer list these days.

    1. Thank you for the prayers, Joyce. Things are pretty scary out there.

How come your husband didn't stay retired? Sorry if that is too snoopy a question. I know that lots of folks can't stand the idea of not regularly doing something, like going to a job every day. From this side of the big river, it looks to me like you have a great place to retire to and spend the weekends. :)

      Have a blessed day!

  2. I have to agree about losing track of time while blogging or reading everyone's blogs. Having relatives serving in the military, I certainly agree with you about their safety and the family's concerns. We are both retired and it definitely has its pros and cons.

    1. You're service folks are in my prayers, too, Connie.

What do you see as some of the cons of being retired? The first one that comes to my mind is money being tight. But, it was that way before retirement for us, too.

      Have a blessed day!

  3. There is certainly more of a need to pray for our military now than there was less than 48 hours ago. Our prayers are with these fine men and women.

It is also easy to lose track of time while reading a good book.

    1. A good book can definitely do that!

These are very scary times. I am having a very difficult time focusing because of what you were told. That dream just keeps coming back to me.

  4. Excellent post. I love learning more about fellow bloggers. I like to send hand written letters to people, so few do that anymore and I think that is sad. I have gone to Goodwill and the Salvation Army a few times and always leave disappointed that their prices are too high. I can get things cheaper on clearance at Walmart and usually Macy's too.

    1. Thanks, Ellen. I like learning about other bloggers, too. It is fun to learn the stories of others. The last letter that I actually wrote to someone never got a response, which is kind of disheartening. Maybe she couldn't read my chicken scratch, so didn't worry with it. Who knows?

I think that some of the thrift stores forget the market that they are supposed to be catering to. It is like they think they are there to service those with unlimited pocketbooks and that just isn't the case. Our local thrift store seems to have things at actual thrift store prices. The other day, the sign in the window said "10 t-shirts for $1" which sounded really reasonable to me. I'm sorry that your stores there are too high.

      Have a great week!

  5. Oh my! To have had to evacuate on your vacation because of a hurricane! Every time I book a beach vacation I struggle with the decision of whether or not to buy the hurricane insurance. So far I haven't and so far we've been lucky.

I'd like to travel to Massachusetts someday to Braintree, Salem, and Plymouth to do some digging into my family history. Trying to get my husband on board with the idea.

    1. I hope that you'll be able to get your husband to consent to the vacation that you want. It sounds fun. We have family history up there, too, from way back in the 1600s.

I must have worded it awkwardly. We didn't have to evacuate while on vacation. The evacuation was our vacation. To us, it was a fun adventure. I felt sorry for those poor folks that had been evacuated from Louisiana here to Texas because of Hurricane Katrina, only to have to evacuate again a few weeks later for Hurricane Rita. We did not go on vacations until we were forced into one due to the evacuation. We had a blast. :)

      Have a great week!
