The Statesmen Quartet had a unique sound that many tried to recreate, but you can't duplicate perfection. I've heard it said that it would be years before anyone could really compete with their sound. In my opinion, there's still no competition. No one else has achieved their style and class. Yes, there have been other great gospel music groups over the years, but no one will ever top The Statesmen Quartet, especially their perfect grouping of Denver Crumpler, Jake Hess, Doy Ott, and Jim "Big Chief" Wetherington along with Hovie Lister.

Definitely a unique sound and a unique group of spiritual men. Loved this song. It was a favorite of my Mother.

How nice that it was a song enjoyed by your mother. I am glad that you loved it, too. I've liked almost all of the songs that I've heard them sing so far. I know there are many more that I haven't heard yet.

My mother-in-law used to love sitting in her favorite rocker and listening to gospel music. I wonder if she ever heard this group.
ReplyDeleteThat would be interesting to know. We've asked my mother if she ever heard them. She had not, at least not that she could remember. David's aunt loves them.
