Do you remember your first day of school?

YES! I remember it like it was yesterday and it had to have been one of the worst days of my little girl life. I had never been away from my mama for an extended period of time (that I know of) and I was scared to death. Mama took me inside the classroom and told me that she would be out on the porch waiting for me when school let out. She told me later that she didn't know what she would have done if I had come out looking for her, only to find her not there. Of course she wasn't going to spend the whole school day on that porch. I know that now, but I guess my little girl mind figured she would be out there all day, however long all day was going to be. Hers wasn't an irrational concern, considering that I scared one little girl so badly with my crying that her mama turned around and found her back at home in the living room with her! I was pitching such a fit that mama took me into the bathroom that was at the back of the classroom with me to have a personal, private chat with me. I don't remember if she spanked me or not. What happened next pretty much wiped out and trumped anything my mama may have done to me in that bathroom.

Mama left. I was scared in this room full of strangers and didn't want to sit at the desk. Instead, I sat as close to the door as I could and still technically be inside the classroom. Behind me was one of those huge notebooks that teachers had back then that was on a tall stand (everything is tall when you're not even 4 ft tall yet!) The teacher stood up and that startled me. I scooted back and that toppled the tablet stand. Miss Cromer walked up to me and popped me on the leg and set her stand back upright. She then went back to her desk and sat down.

Then, my little Irish spitfire temper came out for a visit. I mustered all of the courage that a 6 year old shrimp could muster and marched up to Miss Cromer's desk. What did my sweet, innocent, little self say, you might ask? Well, I said to that woman, "You big dummy!".

Bet you can't guess what happened next!

Okay, so maybe you can. It was back during the days when they could practically peel your skin off and get away with it. She placed my little self across her stool and commenced to paddling it to a pulp. I have no clue what happened next, but I do know this set the stage for my avoidance of public performances of any type. Some of the best teachers on the planet have tried to rid me of my fear of public speaking, all to no avail.

Do you decorate for the different seasons? If so, have you decorated for fall yet?

No, the only real decorating around here is for Christmas and that is pretty much just a tree with ornaments and stockings.

What food do you associate with fall?

Turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce...think of Thanksgiving, and there's your answer!

Do you order books online, buy books in a bookstore, download books to a device, or frequent the library? If not interested in books, how do you get your music?

We do all of the above! We have a zillion free books on the Kindle Fire, but we still purchase books for it as well as print books and still make fairly frequent use of our local library.

When was the last time you realized that you had just been talking to someone really special?

Every time I speak to my husband and children I realize that I am talking to someone pretty special. :)

  2. Hi Suzanne! Wow, that's quite a memory of your first day of school. Yikes! I'm surprised you could ever return. Thank goodness we don't paddle kids anymore.

I am a definite season decorator. Even though the kids are 'up and out' I love to put out their artwork and little banners!

    Nice to see you today!

    1. I never was particularly impressed with school after that, although going to school ultimately beat the alternatives.

I think that children's artwork makes a great decoration. :)

It's nice to see you here, too. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a great week!
