Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 2013: #21

"Big Mama" Annie Black Gunter

It is time again for another fun chat on Patrice's front porch, but before we get down to the chatting, I want to introduce you to the lady that this blog is named after - Annie Black Gunter. Annie was my daddy's paternal grandmother and he called her "Big Mama". She was a very important person in his life, one of his few anchors in the chaos of his childhood. He loved her dearly and, though she was gone by the time that I was born, I loved her through him, for loving him. She is one of the women that built me though I was not privileged to have her physically in my life. One of my cousin's sent me a picture of her and I wanted to share her with you.

QUESTIONS

Are you a heavy sleeper, light sleeper, or somewhere in between?

I take it in spells. Sometimes I sleep so heavily that a hurricane could come along and I wouldn't know it. In fact, that did happen. I slept through the actual storm part of Hurricane Ike. Other times, an ant could walk across a leaf in the oak tree on the other side of the neighbor's yard and it would wake me up. Most of the time I'm somewhere in between.

Are you currently reading anything interesting?

Yes, Patrice's chat questions and post. :) As far as books are concerned, I have several going at the moment. One is called Craft Business Heroes - 30 Creative Entrepreneurs Share The Secrets Of Their Success; another one is Kalevala (not sure I spelled that right!); one about the Fowler ancestry and several devotionals. I just finished one about writing one's legacy. It was very interesting. It talked about writing personal legacies, but also about writing legacies for businesses and organizations. I think the idea would work for small towns, too.

Do you like to enter contests?

I have liked entering them in the past, but I most always lose, so it seems like a waste of time most of the time.

Are you good about taking time to do things you enjoy?

Energy and circumstance stand in my way more than time does when it comes to doing things that I enjoy. Thankfully, I enjoy visiting other blogs and writing on my own, as well as research, all of which can be done from my computer. The other things that I can't do right now will have a place in my life again some day.

What's your favorite food to cook on the grill, or enjoy at a BBQ?

Steak, barbecued chicken, brisket - all of those come to mind. Hamburgers and hot dogs are good on the grill, too.

  1. The craft book sounds interesting. I like books about people who succeed and it sounds like it would be that kind of read. Big Mama actually look small. Small can have BIG personalities though! :)

    1. I agree, Patrice, she does look small, but had a big heart especially for her grand-babies. :)

The name of the book is Craft Business Heroes. It was free on Amazon when I got it, but it is $2.99 for the Kindle now. It can be borrowed for free if you have Amazon Prime.

  2. I love that you named your blog after your GG, that's what the Girl calls my grandmother. I think it so important to learn about where we came from & preserve it. The Girl loves to hear the stories that my immigrant grandparents told me. Have a blessed week :O)
