Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 19: #12

I was so worried that something had happened to Patrice and her family when the questions for Chats on the Farmhouse Porch weren't up yesterday. But, there's nothing to be worried about, PTL. :) There was just a wee bit of construction going on and all is well.

Please head on over to Everyday Ruralty to join in the fun!

This week's questions:

What's your favorite day of the week? Why?

I don't think that I have a favorite day of the week anymore. They are all pretty much the same. When my husband had a regular work week job, my favorite days were Saturday and Sunday because he was home with us. Now, we are self-employed and keep the schedule jam-packed. We're doing good to remember what day of the week it is these days. :)

What's your favorite Christmas movie?

I have two favorites that I've watched since childhood: It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. It just wouldn't be the same without those two movies.

Is there a Christmas Carol that's special to you?

Yes! I love, love, love Enya's version of "Silent Night", called "Oiche Chiun." It is absolutely beautiful and the most peaceful one that I've ever heard.

I found it on YouTube so that you can hear it now.

Is there an art or craft that you'd love to be able to do?

There are a ton of them! I have many interests and am not particularly talented at any of them. David says that I'm my own worst critic. No, there are worse. Anyway, I would love to be able to paint exactly what I see, using real paint and real canvas. I would also love to be able to master my digital painting program. Corel Painter 12is the newest version. I have a lot of ideas for paintings but can't get them from my head to a canvas (digital or otherwise). What is in my head never translates properly through my fingers. But I sure would love for it to!

Do you have a live Christmas tree or an artificial one?

We have an artificial one. After a major change in our family a few years ago, we threw out the old and brought in something new, kind of like shaking the dust off of our sandals as mentioned in the Bible. The one that we have now is white instead of green and is up year-round.

  2. Yes, those are two of my favorite movies, too. I agree on the desire to paint. I have no talent in that direction so it's an impossible dream for me.

So, what can we do to get from our "impossible dreams" to what we want to do? One thing that I struggle with is wondering how to know if I truly have this talent or that one, or if people are just humoring me when they tell me that I've done good. Do you struggle with that, too?

The flip side of that is just because someone tells us that we're bad at something doesn't mean that we really are. How are we to truly know which is right?

It can be very frustrating! Some folks say not to worry about whether other people like it or not, that if we enjoy doing something we should do it. I agree with that up to the point that my perfectionist side kicks in and says "you can't do that right, so don't even bother!"

If it is something that you're wanting to do, do you get encouragement or discouragement when you talk to others close to you about it?
