Writer's Workshop Thursday: Down Under Dreams

The following prompt was brought to me by Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop. Please visit her site and join in the fun!

"What was your big dream for yourself when you were 18 and had graduated from high school?"

When I turned 18, I had been out of high school for 2 months already and, although I had been engaged for two years, I had no idea what was going to happen in my life at that point.

My biggest dreams were to get married and to move far, far away from the place where I was raised. I was all for growing and going. Although I loved my family, my roots weren't as solidly planted in my heart as they are now.

I wanted to move to Australia. My fiance had a job offer from a media-related company there and all was looking good to go for us to be moving to the Land Down Under.

Those were the plans. Things happen, plans changes, and I ended up living in a little town about 7 miles from where I grew up. So much for growing and going. But, I had the man of my dreams and I would be happy anywhere so long as he was with me.

Life has a way of getting in the way of dreams and you're too busy doing the day-to-day to worry about girlhood dreams of happy ever after.

I'm not the same girl that I was in the summer of 1983. I have changed and dreams have changed along with me over time. What used to be so important just isn't so important anymore.

I didn't get the Land Down Under, but I still have the man of my dreams and a down line that I wouldn't trade for anything in this world. :)

  1. To move to Australia at 18 would have been really brave. But, you're right. Life happens! I'm inspired that you still have your man! Here's to a life long commitment!!

Hi! Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

That would have been quite an adventure for one so young, but I thought that I was ready. I don't think that I could be in an airplane for that long these days. :)

Thank you! When we got married, we knew going into it that divorce was not an option that we would take. We married for life, and so far we've been married for 26 years, together for 30. :)

Thanks again for visiting and commenting. Have a great night!

  3. I think the man of your dreams anywhere in the world beats Down Under any day!

  4. Yup being with your soulmate anywhere trumps living somewhere without him.

Now you've got a lifetime of memories together!

  5. Life happens, true. But I'm finding that even though I took a different route, I ended up in the same spot. That's the way it goes, right?

  6. Anne and Angela, definitely!

Miel, yes, that's the way it goes. We end up where we're meant to be, even if it isn't necessarily where *we* meant for us to be. :)

Thanks, all of you, for your comments!
