Day Forty-Eight: Poisonous Love

Toxic relationships, by their very nature, are destructive. Some of them are brought to us by a blood kinship and still others are friends or acquaintances that enter our lives at, perhaps, a vulnerable moment. I think that, overall, our basic human nature is to trust that a friend or family member has our best interests at heart. This would be a wonderful thing to always be the case. Unfortunately, it is not, and we find ourselves inside of a relationship that only brings with it hurt and wanting.

Sometimes, out of the blue, a miracle comes along and wounded relationships are given the opportunity to be made right, to become the healthy relationships that they could have been- should have been- from the start.

For our own sake, if for no other reason, we need to pray for those that have hurt us and we need to get to a point of forgiveness. In praying for those that have hurt us, even if we have to let them go, healing can come into our own hearts, too.

Have you ever experienced a toxic relationship, one that, although you loved the person as friend or family, the relationship was so full of pain and poison that you had no choice but to abandon it?

48. I am thankful for family and friends that remain steadfast and true. I am thankful for those that have come into my life for just a season. They each brought with them lessons that were necessary for growth, although sometimes it was a painful lesson. I am thankful for a Heavenly Father that never deserts me, even when I am acting like a human... especially when I am acting like a human.

Note: This post was intended for Monday, 28 March 2011, but in all the chaos here, I never posted my Day 48 Gift. I am sorry for missing yesterday.

  1. This hit home with me. I have an friend that I was very close to for a number of years and slowly I started realizing how toxic they were to me. Maybe I am just superstitious, but it was like whenever they were with me, bad stuff just seemed to always happen.

The more closely I looked at our friendship, I realized that they were also bringing me down as well. When they cut the friendship off (because their needs weren't being met) it was a true blessing in disguise. I focus on positive people in my life. The moment I smell a miserable person, I am running the other way.

  2. Sonia, thank you for your response and for following me.

I am sorry that you have also experienced a toxic relationship. I don't think that this sounds superstitious at all. I believe that a bad attitude is a magnet for bad things. It is hard for the good stuff in life to find room in a place full of negativity.

I have spent the majority of my life with a very pessimistic, negative, "why me" attitude. The "why" is a very long story.

Over the last year, specifically, after I almost died, I have had a completely different feeling inside me about life in general and have tried to become a more positive person. As often happens when someone works to be happy, a bad thing came along to knock be back a step or two. I went back into the pit, but it didn't keep me.

The book this blog is based on, One Thousand Gifts, has helped to bring me back to the more positive side of things once more. I still have my moments, but I have no intention of going back to the "dark" side. I intend to be truly thankful in all things, good and bad.

I am glad that what seemed a bad thing on the surface turned out to be a blessing for you in reality. It can be such a positive release to be let go and to let go.

We may be taken in by the poison, but we do not have to succumb to it. We just need to know when to let go.

Thanks again for posting your thoughts and sharing a bit of yourself here. :)

    Your sis in Christ,
    Suz
