We’re Related is an app connected to Ancestry.com.  It is available through iTunes and Google Play.  I learned about this app from a post on GeneaMusings.  It is a great site!

It searches through the trees on the Ancestry website to find connections between the various trees to help you find more relatives.  It shows famous potential relatives as well as your Facebook friends if they have a tree on Ancestry.com

It has not shown me any common ancestors with Facebook friends yet (apparently none of my Facebook friends have family trees on Ancestry), but it shows me at least one famous potential relative each day.

I don’t know why two of the common ancestors would be marked “Private”.  Either someone was forgetful when adding in the information and didn’t mark the ancestor as “deceased” OR maybe their family tree is private.  As I understand it, Ancestry doesn’t show information on living people to anyone but the tree owner or those that have the owner’s permission to see the information.  I’m sure these two folks are long gone by now, especially considering the fact that ALL of my great-grandparents have been dead for 50+ years!

We're Related - Oh, Yes, We Are!

This week, I have a hit!  The verified relationship is with John Edwards, who was a senator from North Carolina, involved in some very unfortunate, scandalous things.  Regardless of things a person does, family is family.  According to the We’re Related app, he is my 4th cousin 1x removed. 

Here is how we are connected:

William Rowland is my 3rd great-grandfather and the 4th great-grandfather of Johnny Reid Edwards, aka John Edwards.

This one was easy enough for me to get verification on. I have obituaries and information from my Granny Gunter regarding her part of this line. So, I just had to work my way down from Grandpa Rowland to John Edwards.  Ancestry.com did not provide the name of John Edwards' father as he is apparently still alive, so I had to go to other sources for that. A quick Internet search netted me the name of his father. 

Biography.com only lists his father's first name in this article: John Edwards. Wikipedia lists his father's middle name as well in this listing: John Edwards.  Wikipedia is typically not an approved source, and I understand that, but it at least gives me a place to start.  Until I can find information via an approved source, this works for me.

I will continue to search Newspaper.com for relevant articles pertaining to this family and attach them to my tree at Ancestry.com.

We’re Related – Or, Are We? is going to be a weekly posting sharing with you the potential relatives that Ancestry has shown me via their We’re Related app. All of these are *potential* relatives.  None of the relationships have been proven or confirmed yet.

As I am able to prove or disprove each potential relationship, I will make a post about what I find and will cross-link the posts.

We’re Related – Or, Are We?

We’re Related is an app connected to Ancestry.com. It is available through iTunes and Google Play. I learned about this app from a post on GeneaMusings. It is a great site!

It searches through the trees on the Ancestry website to find connections between the various trees to help you find more relatives. It shows famous potential relatives as well as your Facebook friends if they have a tree on Ancestry.com
