The 3 Biggest Mistakes of New Animal Rescues

Failing to target or niche their rescue.

Targeting your rescue to provide a specific type of help, for selected animals, for a particular community, will help make your rescue stand apart, and gain wider support.

Failing to plan how to fund their organization.

Assuming that enough donations will come in to fund a new rescue is one of the biggest mistakes made. Planning for a diverse source of funding provides the greatest chance at success. Nonprofit groups may charge fees for some services. It’s also a good idea to let people know the actual cost of food, veterinary care and other costs, and seek sponsorships to cover specific activities.

Failing to operate their rescue like a business.

Nonprofits may not have “owners” or stockholders, but in most other respects they are, and should be managed like, a business. Just like for-profit businesses you must bring in more revenue than you spend or you won’t be around long-term. Nonprofits may obtain exemption from some taxes, like federal and state income tax, and sales tax in states, but nonprofit groups must pay employment and other taxes. Just like any business, you need operating and marketing plans, and to stay informed of all the rules and requirements to operate your animal rescue business legally.

5 Steps to Get Your Animal Rescue Off and Running with the Big Dogs

Step 1: Choose your niche.

Your chances of success is better the more “niched” you are.

Step 2: Gather your pack.

Build your pack, including volunteers to serve on your board of directors, and to help with running your organization.

Step 3: Structure for success.

The IRS and your state government have rules for how to set-up a nonprofit animal rescue. Make sure that you, and your board of directors understand the legal requirements to get and keep your organization in compliance with federal and state tax-exemption & fundraising rules.

Step 4: Raise support.

Plan how you will fund your operations. The more self-sustaining your plan the better.

Step 5: Risk management & insurance.

Know the risks involved with operating an animal welfare organization and the steps you can take, including obtaining insurance, to reduce your liability.

Animal Shelter Appreciation Week November 5-11, 2017

Tomorrow starts Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, November 5-11, 2017.

Please let your local animal shelter know how much you appreciate all that they do for the animals in your area. These shelters often need donations, not just money, to meet the needs of those in their care. If you can sew, knit, or crochet, how about making blankets for the crates the animals sleep in? The Snuggles Project and Comfort for Critters both offer patterns for animal snuggles and blankets.

If your local "shelter" is a kill shelter, do what you can to get it changed to a no-kill shelter. Contact local officials and let them know your thoughts on the matter.
