Thanks, Joyce, for a home-filled Hodgepodge!
1. Can you believe we're rolling into the Labor Day weekend? What's a project you'll labor over this fall?
“Labor”...that word makes my tummy hurt. :)
The first thing that comes to mind is re-painting some of the rooms in this house and replacing window treatments.
2. Tell us about the best perks you ever had in a job?
The “perkiest” job I’ve ever had was with David’s family at their Western Auto Store. I think David covered the perks there pretty well in his post.
At another place I have worked, the confidence that the customers placed in me to provide them with the items they desired, and the smiles on their faces when I was able to follow through, were some of the best perks I can think of at the moment.
3. August 31st is National South Carolina Day. Have you ever been to SC? Any desire to go? According to Southern Living, these are the top ten things to do in South Carolina...
Explore Charleston, bike, golf or relax on Hilton Head Island, see the beach and the boardwalk at Myrtle Beach, visit the state museum in the capital city Columbia, observe the wildlife and natural beauty of the Ace Basin, take a walk or hop on a trolley and check out Greenville's charming main street, visit Fort Sumter where the Civil War began, stroll through Pearl Fryar's Topiary Garden in Bishopville leaving time to check out The Button Museum, also in Bishopville, see Morgan Island (also known as Monkey Island)-home to nearly 4000 Rhesus monkeys.
Which is most appealing to you today? If you're a SC native, resident, or frequent visitor what would you add to the list?
Oh yeah, boy, have I ever been to South Carolina. I was born there and spent the first 39 years of my life there. And before that, over 300 years of family before me was there. YES I do desire to go back. I have been awful homesick lately.
After reading the Liz Talbot Mystery books about Stella Maris, a fictional island town near Charleston, Charleston would be on my list of South Carolina things to take in if I ever got to go back to South Carolina. I’ve never been to the Ace Basin or to Pearl Fryar’s Topiary Garden. They sound like great places to visit and a definite photographic opportunity. I have been to Fort Sumter and that boat ride over certainly an experience. I’ve never been on waters so choppy as those were. It is funny that The Button Museum was mentioned as, not too long ago, I read about the Button King there. :) Going to visit the monkeys sounds like fun, too.
I would add the following to the list:
Old Stone Church in Clemson
Fort Hill (John C. Calhoun Mansion), also in Clemson
And, for an under-the-water adventure, how about swimming around to find my family’s plantation, Harrisburg Plantation, that got flooded during the creation of Lake Hartwell? The family cemetery is the only part of the plantation now above water. It is on an island in the lake somewhere.
4. Beef, pork, country-style, barbecued, baby back, spare or short...your favorite kind of rib? What's a dish you enjoy that really 'sticks to your ribs'?
I love barbecued pork ribs.
I love Thanksgiving dinner and the way Granny put on a feast, there was way plenty that could stick to one’s ribs. I also love a good pot roast with potatoes and carrots and yeast rolls to go with it.
5. What's one important skill you think every person should have? Why?
I think that knowing how to read is probably the most important skill a person should have. If you can read, you can learn about things that maybe you’ll never be able to see in person. You can learn how to do things, like how to cook or to speak a foreign language and a zillion other things. Knowing how to read unleashes the world before us. We are no longer bound by the limits places on us by illiteracy. Most importantly, we can read of Heavenly Father’s love for us and the sacrifice that was made for us by His Son Jesus on the cross. Reading leads us to hope!
6. Insert your own random thought here.
This weekend has been really weird for me. I have not been scared through this storm. When Harvey was first projected to hit as a Category 2 right here, I was concerned a little, but not scared. Excited would probably be the best word for it. When it was upgraded to make landfall as a Cat 3, I still wasn’t scared. When finally it was upgraded to a Cat 4, I still wasn’t scared. The river is predicted to top 50 feet, with it being at flood stage at 39 feet. I’m still not scared. Other folks are upset, some freaking out, but I have the sure feeling that we’re going to be okay. There’s no fear in me.
2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
I believe it because that is what He has given me!
Have a blessed week, y'all!

Yes, it is like God placed His hand over our little town. There is a little wind damage, but we made it fairly well through the storm. South Carolina is a great place to visit and live. I love you, Zing! Zing!
ReplyDeleteI love you, too, my Zing. :) I think that Heavenly Father heard Sis's prayer to let us borrow Tampa's bubble and I am grateful for that.
DeletePraise God for your faith in Him that your area would be spared. Joining you in prayer for Texas! I forgot to comment on David's Hodgepodge how important it is to have a knowledge of personal finance and I agree with your answer about being able to read. So much is available to us when we have the basics.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the prayers, Pamela! It got a whole lot wetter here in this town after I wrote this post on Tuesday evening. Our town is isolated from the others due to flooding and our neighborhood, last we checked, was isolated from our town due to the water being everywhere. Still, our neighborhood is sitting out of the flood waters. No water in our house, or the neighbors as far as I know, but very squishy yards out there.
DeleteHave a blessed day.
Read! I wish I'd thought if that! I knew I was as forgetting an important skill. So glad to hear you're safe and dry!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joyce. Right now we're in an island "paradise" of sorts. Water is everywhere around us, but not in our immediate neighborhood. So far, so good. Heavenly Father has really blessed us! The rest of town hasn't been so fortunate. David made a post about our friend Anwar and what happened to him. Thank you for the prayers.
DeleteHave a blessed day.
That's so true about reading as an important skill! You've listed so many doors that open because of being able to read...many of which we take for granted if we've been reading our entire lives. So happy to hear that your home and community is safe from the storm. It seems unfathomable the amount of rain that fell over such a short period of time.
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, it has been unreal! Our town is a whole lot wetter since I originally wrote this post, but the river is starting to recede now. Hopefully, things can get back to normal soon. Our little neighborhood has been cut off from pretty much everything.
DeleteHave a blessed day.
Why are we so amazed when God does exactly what He promised to do. He said "Do not fear, for I am with you!", but so often, we are surprised when He does His amazing works. I live in north Louisiana, so would be interested in knowing how close a neighbor you are to me. We are expecting what little Harvey has left today and tomorrow. Your reading answer is so right on. I enjoyed my visit with you today and reading your answers. Will also be paying David a visit.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't surprised. I knew He was going to keep us safe. I could feel it and had no doubt. I think, though, that sometimes we pray and pray for something and it doesn't happen that, when He does answer our prayers on something, it is a big surprise because we no longer expect Him to hear our prayers. So many prayers have been answered lately that this one was easy for me. :)
DeleteWe are 60 miles southwest of Houston in Wharton, Texas.
Thank you. Have a blessed day.
Reading! Of course! Can't get very far without being able to read. I'm glad you and your family are safe. I'll take pot roast with all the trimmings you mentioned and cover it all up in gravy!
ReplyDeleteOooh you are making me very hungry! I love gravy, too. We can't even get to the grocery store right now. Even if we could, they don't have anything. No trucks have been able to get in to re-supply them. Hopefully, soon!
DeleteWe are so blessed to have been able to learn to read. As I understand it, in some cultures (at least in the past) women were not allowed to learn to read. I can't image a life like that.
Thank you and have a blessed day!
Glad you are safe from the storm. I enjoy reading more about you through the Hodgepodge. I agree reading is a most important skill.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ellen. We appreciate the prayers for continued safety here. I am glad that you enjoy the Hodgepodge, too. I hope that you will hop in and join us!
DeleteHave a blessed day. :)
Thank you. :) What a wonderful supper you had! When you make a pot roast with potatoes and carrots, what do you serve along with it?
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed day. :)
We had done the front two bedrooms and hallway, now my husband just started painting the baseboards down the rest of the hallway. We have a lot of rooms to paint. Glad that you are safe from Harvey. Enjoyed reading your answers. Have a nice Labor Day Weekend.
ReplyDeleteWe have more rooms to paint than we use, but hopefully it will go quickly once we get started. I'm not looking forward to the paint smell. How many rooms do you have left to paint?
DeleteThank you. We have been very blessed so far. Our town is an island right now and our neighborhood is an island in this town, but we safe.
Have a blessed weekend!
