Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. When was the last time you chatted with a neighbor? About what? (sharing that last bit is optional)

It was probably a few weeks ago, neighbors on both sides, and it was about their dogs. The nice young people on the one side of us has a puppy and it had gotten itself tangled up, nearly hung itself, on the side of its house.  The neighbors on the other side, it was about their big growly dogs coming after us in our own yard.

2. River, lake, ocean, or waterfall...which one are you most like and why?

All of them. They are all water features and as often as I’m in the bathroom, I must be full of water, too! Other than that, I guess I would choose a waterfall because I’ve been doing a lot of crying lately because of some extended family drama.

3. July 13 is National Delaware Day. Ever been to Delaware? Delaware is called 'the first state' because it was the first to declare independence from the British. What's your state's nickname and does that moniker make sense to you? If you were in charge, what nickname would you give your home state?

I have never been to Delaware. I have never been higher up than Virginia. The nickname for South Carolina (where I was born) is the Palmetto State.  The nickname for Texas (where we now live) is the Lone Star State. Yes, the nicknames make sense to me.

For South Carolina, maybe I would go with the “We’ve Got It All State”.

For Texas, I would probably choose something like “You’re Going to Melt Here State”.

Of course, those are way too long for the space on the license plates!

4. What dish did you contribute to the last potluck meal you attended? Do you have a go-to recipe for potluck suppers?

The last potluck supper I went to was probably over 30 years ago and I have no idea for sure what I took. I possibly took a green bean casserole and maybe homemade cloverleaf rolls.

5. What is your number one tip for a brand new parent?

I would say get as much done as you can in the house two or so weeks before the baby is due to be born and spend that last week before the birth resting as much as possible because it will be a long time before it happens again afterwards. :) After the baby is born, nap when the baby naps or you’re going to be exhausted more often than not.

AND…

Pick that baby up when he or she cries. It won’t spoil them. It will help them to feel safe and secure. They learn that you are there for them and that they can trust you.  This stage doesn’t last forever and we don’t get do-overs.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I'm so optimistic I'd go after Moby Dick in a row boat and take the tartar sauce with me. ~Zig Ziglar~

I’m in! What about you? Don’t forget to bring the cocktail sauce and the hushpuppies! :)

  1. Good Ol' Zig. Got to love him. As far as kids are concerned, once they are here you never get to rest again. Even when they are gone you sit on edge worried. I love you. Zing! Zing!

    1. That's the truth. They grow up and the worries grow up with them, just getting bigger. Thankfully, Heavenly Father has it all under control.
I love you, too, my Zing. :)

  2. Great advice for the new parent, Suzanne. And I haven't made clover leaf rolls in about that long either.

  3. ((Hugs)) on the family drama. Yum, green bean casserole is a favorite of mine. That was my advice, nap when the baby naps. I didn't do that and I wish I would have. Love your random!

    1. Thanks for the hugs, Debby, and hugs back to you, too. I didn't always nap when the baby napped, but sometimes I did. One time one of the babies and I fell asleep while nursing and missed the school bus bringing back the older kid. They were out there laying on the bus horn to get my attention because they couldn't let a kindergartner off the bus without a visual on an authorized adult. I think that was a good policy, but what a way to get awakened. haha

Thanks! I've always loved Zig Ziglar. I wish that I could have met him in person. If anyone could have brought me out of my shell, he could have. :)

      Have a blessed week!

  4. I love your advice to pick up the baby when he or she cries. I have not had a baby, but it makes sense that it helps build trust knowing you are there for them.

    1. Thank you, Ellen. I never have liked the idea of just letting them cry it out. We all need to know that someone has our back and holding the baby is one way to let them know that.

      Have a blessed week!

    1. Thank you, Debby. I could probably eat an entire green bean casserole on my own. I love the stuff, too. :)

      Have a blessed week!
