Wednesday Hodgepodge

Wednesday Hodgepodge 1 March 2017

1. 'Slow and steady wins the race'...tell us about a time this was true in your own life.

While nothing specific comes to mind at the moment, this is generally my idea when it comes to driving around here. Slow, steady, and alive, beats fast, maniacal, and crashed into a concrete barrier anytime, as far as I’m concerned!

The speed limit here in most places is at least 60 mph. In some areas, it is 75 mph. I don’t need to get anywhere bad enough to go 75 mph. For one thing, it is dangerous, and for another, it sucks the gas out of the car much too fast. Usually, I drive between 55 and 65, depending on what traffic is around me, and the condition of the road I am on and, of course, the posted speed limit.

2. 'As slow as molasses'...Do you like molasses? How about maple syrup? Caramel? Butterscotch? What's your favorite of the slow-moving treats mentioned here, and what's your favorite food made with that sweet treat?

I like all of those mentioned. My teeth don’t appreciate the sweet treat, but the rest of me sure does! I can’t pick a favorite. I like them on different things. I like pancakes with maple syrup. I like buttered toast with molasses. I like caramel on most anything, but especially apples, though I can no longer eat them the way they were intended to be eaten. I also like the little butterscotch-flavored hard candies.

3. Your favorite slow song?

While I don’t know the exact one that would absolutely win a lifetime achievement award in my book (I can’t choose just one!), one of my favorite slow songs is “Are You Lonesome Tonight” by Elvis Presley, my 7th cousin, 1x removed. Yes, there is a story attached to that song, but this post would be way too long if I told it. I’ll save it for the Master Story-teller. A little bird tells me that he chose that song, too.

4. Your favorite thing to make in a slow cooker or crock pot?

Roast beef with carrots, potatoes, broccoli, garlic, and onions is probably my favorite thing to cook in a crockpot/slow-cooker.

5. 'You may delay, but time will not.' ~Benjamin Franklin Are you more a hurrier or a delayer when it comes to unpleasant tasks that need doing? What are you currently either delaying or hurrying to get through this week or month?

I am both, depending on the situation involved. When it is something that I really, really want to do, I’m all “come on already!”. With things that I don’t want to do, I usually want to go ahead and get it over with, but sometimes I am a heavy-duty procrastinator. When I am overwhelmed, which is very often lately, I tend to procrastinate, I guess hoping that whatever is overwhelming me will just go away. It doesn’t generally. Usually more things come along to add to the overwhelm.

I guess I am hurrying to get to the wildflowers and maybe the mountains and delaying on this stack of books that I need to read and review.  How can I concentrate on reading when there are flowers out there calling for me?

6. Tell us three things you encounter regularly or even just occasionally that you find to be annoyingly slow.

Fast food drive-thrus
Red lights
Doctor appointments

7. March is National Craft Month. Are you crafty? Tell us about something crafty you'll try in the next thirty-one days. Or something crafty you'd like to try or wish you had the skill to make happen.

I will try to get a good bit done on the Grandmother’s Flower Garden crocheted afghan that I’m working on.

Also, I am going to try my hand at photography with a reverse-mounted lens and see what happens with that.

And, once the tree part gets delivered to me, I am going to try my hand at making a clock from a part of one of the trees that the Valentine’s Day tornadoes ripped up at the local college here where our kids started their college careers.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Something was shared with me earlier that really irks me to no end. There is evidently this thought out there that shy people cannot learn. While I realize that asking questions can be a good way to learn, so can listening. Being loud and out there on display isn’t the only way and sometimes that “out there-ness” gets in the way of learning. Just because someone is bashful and/or introverted doesn’t mean that their brains are turned off, that they aren’t listening, that they are incapable of learning. Not everyone has to be loud and obnoxious to learn something. If everyone is on stage putting on a show, who is going to be the audience?

How about celebrating our differences rather than belittling me because I am not like you?
Heavenly Father made us both. He made me, so who are you to decide that I am worthless, or incapable, or inadequate?

  1. What a great idea, making a clock with part of that tree.

I agree with your random thought.... I won't add too much more other than say I feel irked too that someone would even think that about introverts or shy people.

    1. Thank you! I am glad that someone else feels the same way as I do about this. It was very upsetting to me and felt like another round of "you're totally inadequate and worthless". That message seems to be everywhere these days.

I am excited about making the clock and can't wait until the woodcutters can get the piece of the tree to me. I've never done anything like this before. :)

  2. Have never heard of a reverse-mounted lens for taking photos. Would enjoy seeing what your photos look like. Looking at wildflowers sounds like a relaxing way to spend a day. I can see why other things would be put on hold to do that! :)

    1. It is a very relaxing way to spend a day. We ended up not going out today on our wildflower hunt, but plan to stop by a nearby field sometime tomorrow if the weather allows it. Right now, we're being teased about rain. The clouds are there, but no rain yet that we've seen. Its just cloudy enough to keep us unsure about making a long trip to hunt for the fields full of flowers. We wouldn't want to drive 200 miles and then not be able to get out of the car because of thunderstorms or rain.

I will be sure to post pictures here and on McClendon Villa when I do the reverse-mounted lens experiments. Hopefully I'll be able to do that by the weekend.

  4. I often tend to be a slow person, though not so much when driving. If there were no speed limit on interstates in the desert I'd drive 100 MPH or more if I could.

I used to eat molasses a lot on pancakes and such, but haven't bought molasses in years. I especially like sorghum but I never see it here where I am.

In a crock pot I typically fix spaghetti sauce or chili and on St Pat's day I'll usually fix a corned beef brisket in my crock pot along with potatoes, carrots, and cabbage. The time is coming again soon---mmmm!

    1. I see that we have a similar foot - a lead foot. haha I have had to work hard to slow down. My natural tendencies are to drive fast, especially if I'm mad. But, the people out here go way, way too fast.

I haven't had molasses in years, but I sure enjoyed it back then. I don't know that I've ever had sorghum molasses. We see sorghum growing all over the place around here, but I don't know if these stores have sorghum molasses or not.

The thought of corned beef, potatoes, carrots, and cabbage makes me hungry. Enjoy your St. Patrick's Day meal. :)

    1. Thank you, Debby, on all counts. :)

Can you believe that someone really thinks that shy people can't learn? I think that is unreal (and unfair!). I wonder what rock this person crawled out from under. OY!

  6. I think you prove the shy people cannot learn is wrong. You are very shy and introverted and were an honor graduate. I am very extroverted and was a surprise graduate. That is everyone was surprised that I accumulated enough credits to graduate while being so goofy. The person who made that statement is full of beans.

  7. WOW!75 is fast, I am glad 65 is the fastest around here. I never drive on highways so I never go fast anyway.

    1. Yes, it is very fast! Back home in South Carolina before we left, the school buses couldn't go over 35mph. Out here, they go zipping by on the freeway as fast as the other traffic. I can't imagine driving a school bus at those speeds. My mama drove a school bus for about 30 years and nearly had a heart attack when I told her how fast they go out here. It is just way too fast.

  8. I cannot imagine a high speed limit where I live; we don't go more than 50 yards without a curve in the road. Roast beef is always a slow cooker favorite for me. I'm with you on #8. :) Have a wonderful day!

    1. Most of the roads here are pretty straight. There are a few curvy ones, though. One can usually see for miles on these roads.

Thank you. I wish that more folks felt the same way. I can't figure where a person would get such an idea, that shy folks can't learn.

    1. Thanks, Paula. That is a good question. And where did consistent goodness run off to? Used to be, you could always get good fries at McDonald's. Not so anymore. It is frustrating never knowing what you're going to get in the way of quality.
