Wednesday Hodgepodge - 13 July 2016

1. Do you find yourself influencing your world, or is it more the other way around?

I think more often than not, it is influencing me, and not necessarily for the better. There are things going on that are bad enough in their own rights, but reactions to them are making them even worse for everyone around. Why should I be punished for something someone else did just because I have some things in common with them? It's all making me pretty cranky!

'79 is the year that I met David.
2. July 14th is National Tape Measure Day...the device was patented on this date in 1868. When did you last use a tape measure? Do you always know where to find one in your house? Tell us one way in which you feel blessed 'beyond measure'.

I last used a tape measure a few days ago to measure the circumference of my pony tail. Did you know that people buy human hair to make wigs? While I likely won't cut my hair for any reason, including selling it, I measured it to see what I could possibly get for a 3" circumference, 6" long, gray, virgin (as in undyed, untreated, etc.) hair. If it were accepted by the place, I could earn $118 dollars for it. David likes it long, so it is worth much more than that staying on my head!

Update! I missed parts of this the first time through. I almost always know where to find my tape measure.  I have a bucket near my chair with my knitting/crocheting things in it and it is almost always in there.  Sometimes it goes on walk-about.

I am blessed with a great husband and beautiful children. I am blessed with generations of strong men and women behind me.  All of them make me who I am today.

3.The Plaza Hotel (Eloise), The Land of Oz (The Wizard of Oz), Narnia (The Chronicles of Narnia), The Hundred Acre Wood (Winnie the Pooh), Wonderland (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland), or Never Never Land (Peter Pan)...which storybook land (on this list!) would you most like to visit and why?

It would be between The Hundred Acre Wood and Never, Never Land. I love Winnie the Pooh, but Laynie has played Tinkerbell for the last few years at a local character breakfast. So, Never Never Land would be perfect.

4. Where and when do you get your best ideas?

It most often happens when I am somewhere without a pen and paper, like in the shower or in bed. If I'm lucky, I remember them long enough to write them down.

5. So what have you been watching on TV this summer? Anything good?

We don’t have a TV service anymore. When we watch something, it is a DVD or something on Amazon or Netflix. We generally watch My Little Pony and the cutest little movie called Hotel Transylvania II. It has the most adorable little curly-haired baby vampire baby. :)

6. 'Don't swim for an hour after you eat', 'Dog days of summer', 'Knee high by the Fourth of July'...choose a summer saying from the list or share one of your own, then tell us what image or memory comes to mind when you hear it spoken.

I don't know that this saying is inherently "summer", but it is one that I remember from my childhood. We had a neighbor named Joanne with a husband named Epp and a daughter named Dawn. We spent a lot of time at their house. She even let me vacuum her house, which I thought was way cool (we didn't have a vacuum cleaner or carpet). Anyway, one phrase that I often heard at her house and never anywhere else was, "I'll be jumped up!" It was an expression of surprise or wonder. I know what it means; I just can't seem to find the words at the moment.

7. In a single sentence, sum up one life lesson you've learned.

No matter what anyone else says about me or my worth, Heavenly Father made the determination of my worth when He sent Jesus to die for my sins.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

This world is not perfect, neither are the people in it. Sometimes we can hold so fast to our own thoughts that we do not open up to the possibility of a solution. We close our minds and hearts when the answer is standing there right in our faces, but we refuse to see it. If we aren't going to be open to a solution, then we need to quit whining about the problem.

  2. My oldest daughter donated hair to Locks of Love about four years ago. My niece passed away after a brutal battle with leukemia and my daughter wanted to donate hair that could be used to make a wig for somebody's child who needed it. They required at least 10 inches, but she ended up cutting 14 to get her now short hair styled. She has since regrown her hair long, but I like to think of a little girl being blessed by my daughter's gift. Hope you are staying cool and having a nice summer!

    1. I am so sorry to hear about your niece. That is so sad. How old was she?
That was a very sweet thing for your daughter to do. I know she'll be blessed for her compassionate heart.

Nope, we're not staying cool. We stay in our room with the window AC and a fan and we're still hot. Our heat index today is 115 degrees! Good grief!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Have a wonderful summer and a blessed day. :)

  3. Very good random thought and also your life lesson. It has almost taken me a lifetime to know that with confidence. When our dil was pregnant, she let her hair grow out and then gave it to Locks of Love. Happy Wednesday to you.

    1. Thank you, Connie. It is still something that I'm trying to grab hold of. I know it to be true. Applying it doesn't seem so easy. I just have to get to a point where that knowledge overrides the old voices that said otherwise over the course of my life. I'll get there.

I know that your daughter-in-law will be blessed for her compassionate heart, too. That was very sweet of her to do.

I hope that you have a blessed Wednesday, too. :)

    1. Thank you, April. I appreciate that very much. :) Now, if everyone could realize their worth and that of others, maybe things would be a lot less upsetting on this earth.

      Have a blessed day!

  5. You might be right about #1 because I'm certainly feeling angry at our world!!! I've seen a lot of Winnie the Pooh answers today and I realize I don't know anything about The Hundred Acres Woods. Yep, I get great ideas in the shower.

    1. Thank you, Debby. It is kind of difficult not to be angry with all the madness going on out there. We have to find a way to still be a good witness in all of this chaos. It isn't always easy.

I grew up in the woods, so anything called "Woods" and especially if it is big woods like 100 acres implies, it's a winner. :)

What has been your best shower-inspired idea? I get poems in there all the time, but they are lost by the time I get back to a piece of paper.

      Have a blessed day!

  7. Your final thought is a great one. And it is so true. The world is a sad place right now. I am not sure what we are going to do about it. Have a wonderful day!

    1. Thank you, Paula. I think if we each take care of our local area, how we treat our family members, our neighbors, etc., and treat them how we want to be treated, then collectively, we'll make a difference that will ultimately spread out to a larger area. We've got to start somewhere and someone has to take the first step or nothing will ever change.

I hope that you have a wonderful day, too!

    1. I hope that you do join us, Annie. It is lots of fun!

I miss Patrice's chats, too. It was wonderful to be a part of that. Patrice and I write back and forth to each other. She's a sweet friend. I wish she could pick the Chats on the Farmhouse Porch back up again. We especially enjoyed hearing about Wendell's antics.

    2. PS I don't know if you knew it or not, but Patrice's daughter wrote a book. It is called Call Me Luciano by Lauren Mariah. We have it and it is an interesting story. It is over in my sidebar with the other Kindle books written by friends.

      Have a great night. :)

    1. Thank you. :) I have never been to NYC. Our oldest son was there for one New Year's Eve celebration after he joined the Navy. If I were to go that is when I would want to go, to see the ball drop in person. But, since it would be so crowded then, it is also the time that I wouldn't want to be there. If you were to go to NYC, what would be first on your agenda to do?
