The Statesmen were a group for a very long time, beginning in 1948 and ending sometime in the early 2000s. Over the years, there were several personnel changes. The group that David and I like the very best included Denver Crumpler (tenor), Jake Hess (lead), Doy Ott (baritone), Jim "Big Chief" Wetherington (bass), and Hovie Lister (piano). They were considered the perfect quartet and I believe it!
The video that follows has two of our core group missing - Denver Crumpler and Jake Hess. In their stead are Sherril Nielsen as tenor and Jim Hill as lead. They aren't Denver and Jake, but they do a fine job of it, I think. Doy, Chief, and Hovie are as great as ever.

What a wonderful blend of voices. I enjoyed this video and the previous ones here on your AtoZ Challenge. Always good to hear from fellow 'Genealogy/Graveyard' researchers. In answer to your comment on CITexas Gal.. those 'Name Rocks' do Rock my world...especially when they confirm ancestors existence and birth/death dates. Thanks for your visit and following. Remember seeing them on TV from time to time! I love the barbershop style of old gospel music. Church I grew up in had a men's quartet that would sometimes so specials. When that music starts, you just feel like you are having church!

I've always loved the barbershop quartets, too. I agree. Some music just totally wraps around you and you can feel the Holy Spirit. Some other music just sits there. There's nothing quite like Southern gospel music to get one in a worshiping mindset.
DeleteHow cool that you saw them on TV! I don't know that I ever did. I went to lots of camp meetings and tent revivals as a child. I don't remember all the groups that I saw, but I think it would be cool if the Statesmen had been one of them.
