Monday Quiz About Me

Acting Balanced

Questions:

1. July is National Ice Cream month - are you celebrating?

Yes! We will be having ice cream today, but not because it is National Ice Cream Month. Today is our daughter Dorian's birthday. She was stillborn twenty years ago, on this date in 1993, in Greenwood, South Carolina.

2. What is your favorite rainy day activity?

I like to read and crochet. Sometimes I draw or do digital painting or create fractal images. If it is storming to the point that it is unsafe to have the computers on, we watch television and I crochet while we're watching television.

3. What is the one book from High School that you remember reading most? Why?

We had to read A Tale of Two Cities in the ninth grade. I remember it because it was probably the longest and most confusing book that I'd read up to that point. I was further amazed to find out that my grandma had to read it in the third grade! This further goes to prove the dumbing down of America to me. If the elementary school children of the 1920s were expected to comprehend it, then why shouldn't the third graders of the 1970s or the 2010s also be expected to read and understand it? Somehow this is progress? I don't think so. I think that the children of today (and in my day, too!) are being underestimated. If they are treated like they can't do something, what reason do that have to be able to do it? Give them the challenge and just maybe they'll rise to the challenge!

4. Have you ever visited Charleston, SC?

Oh yeah! I grew up in Anderson, South Carolina, pretty much the entire state away from Charleston. I was blessed to go there on several occasions. My husband and I took the harbor tour out to Fort Sumter and boy was that an experience. The water and the wind didn't even want to let the boat get to the dock, but we finally made it onto the island. Later, we were blessed to be able to take our children there so that they could see the awesomeness of the city that survived Hurricane Hugo and learn more about its history. It was a wonderful time.

A friend of our family took this picture on one of her visits to Charleston and allowed me to do a digital painting of it.

Bonus question for you to answer in the comment section:

Do you know anything about the history of your home or the land that it is on?

  1. My current home is about 60 years old and was originally owned by a gangster. He did something bad and ended up on the run. The house was then purchased by an air force family and then by us.

    1. I think that it is very cool that you have lived in the same area all of your life. When I was young, I couldn't wait to get out and away from where I grew up. Now, I just wish that we'd never left. It isn't easy to leave so much family history behind.

    1. I think that it would be interesting to find out the history of what may have been there before the apartments were there, don't you? The house that we live in now was the home of a doctor's widow. She had it built several years after he died. But, years before that, this neighborhood was a cotton plantation, which is interesting to us because the neighborhood that we left in South Carolina was built on what once was a cotton plantation, too.

  4. I love your digital painting! You've captured the 'southern charm' of Charleston :)

As for the history of my home and land. Yes, I know it well. Hubby built our home with his own two hands, back in 2004. The land we live on has been in hubby's family for over sixty years, before that, I don't know who owned it.

How wonderful that your husband built your home and on family land, too! That is just great. May it be in your family for many, many more years to come. It sounds to me like you're living what I dream of. :)
