Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 2013: #29

Everyday Ruralty

Questions

Have you cooked any interesting dishes lately?

Only if meatloaf counts.

What question would you like to ask Wendell?

Are you the senior horse on the farm?

Have you had any thoughts of Christmas yet?

No, not really. While the reason for the season is, and will always be, meaningful and special to me, the day itself is just another day at this point in my life.

Do you make jams and jellies?

No, but I would love to learn how. My Granny Gunter made apple butter and I always loved it. I sure miss it, too!

Do you have any board games that you enjoy?

I always enjoyed playing Parcheesi, Scrabble, and Chinese Checkers with my Grandma Spence. We don't really play board games around here. The kids play video games that are just too much for me. David and I like taking standard card games and bending them to fit our own version of fun. We've done this with Crazy Eights and Rummy. Our versions are called Dr. Pepper and Bobalated.

Patrice, regarding the cat: David says that no, we haven't seen your cat, but we have plenty and are willing to share!

    1. The humidity going on has to be the absolute worst lately. I can't stand being hot and sticky. ICK! Thankfully, I haven't had to be outside too very much in it.

The meatloaf...I had three pounds of ground beef (the cheapest that I could find and it was NOT cheap, at least not for my current budget) and a packet of meatloaf seasoning mix that I think was McCormick brand, but I'm not sure at this point. I mixed that together with 3 sesame seeded hamburger bun pieces that I crumbled up, two eggs, about 1/2 cup or so of milk. I squished it all together by hand (more ICK!) and put it into the loaf pan, spread ketchup over the top (I may use tomato paste or sauce next time), and cooked it for an hour. I can't remember for sure the temperature, but I think it was 375 degrees. These senior moments are for the birds. haha

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I hope that you enjoy your week, too. :)

  2. Hmm, meatloaf sounds good to me. I saw somewhere to make mini ones in muffin tins. Then you can freeze some to have whenever. Wish I had thought of that before it got too hot to want to turn on my oven :)

    1. I think cooking them in the muffin tins is a neat idea. I plan to try it that way at some point. Even if I had done that this time, none of the muffins would have made it to the freezer. The whole meatloaf was gone by the end of supper! It had been so long since we've had meatloaf, that it was inhaled. haha

  3. Suz, I've heard of people bending rules for card games and making their own versions. Sounds like fun. I forgot about the cat too... Patrice, when you see this... I've not seen any cats lately... kind of strange honestly.

    1. Making up our own games is a lot of fun. I also wonder with some of them if we've hit upon a marketable idea. Wouldn't that be cool, to be a game inventor? :)

We seen a herd of kitties every time we step out of our house. Our carport is the designated nursery. Pretty much anytime a cat in our neighborhood gives birth, she does it in our carport. Unfortunately, the last 3 litters that have been born out there have died. Only one kitty has survived of the recent newborns and it won't let anybody get near it.

    1. I love Scrabble, too. :)

The last time that I played Parcheesi was about 21 years ago with my grandma, the year before she died. I was at her and Grandpa's apartment; he had just recently died. It was just me, Grandma, and one of my brothers playing the game. She thought that I was her mama. I loved playing games with Grandma. :)

  5. Oh yes, I love Scrabble too! I keep forgetting about board games I enjoy!

    Great question for Wendell.

Love apple butter too but I've never made it!

    Blessings,

    1. Thanks. :) I was having a hard time coming up with a question for Wendell.

Do you read the RedHead Writer's blog? I just saw an apple butter recipe on her site that sounds pretty easy, but one part of it takes 23 hours. Here is the link:

      RedHead Riter's Apple Butter Recipe

I hope that link works. I followed the instructions for creating clickable links in Blogger comments, but it doesn't always work for me. :)

  6. We played board games a lot when our kids were small. We have an Xbox 360 that DH bought me for Christmas. The main thing we use it for is my fitness games, if you can call it that. We did get one "real" games for it - Madden NFL which hasn't been played too much. I prefer board games to video games any day. I am totally with you concerning Christmas, but you know, I still try to do as much of our traditional things as when our kids were young. The last child has finally moved out, so I'm not sure how the empty-nest syndrome will affect me around the holidays. Thanks for visiting!

    1. I agree with you about board games over video games. The video games these days make me way too dizzy. If I've got to play a video game, give me flat Mario any day. :)

I wish that we could still do Christmas like we did when the kids were little, but I think that we all feel about the same. It has just lost its 'magic'...too much has happened over the years. I do hope that we'll still have the family special dinners as they all go out on their own.

I hope that the empty-nest syndrome won't affect you too bad. I hope that they'll all come home for a traditional Christmas with you!

  8. Hi, it's Wendell here. I'm not the senior horse around here. Rocky and Ricky Percheron are 21. I am the most charming though. Horse hugs, Wendell

    1. Howdy, Wendell. You definitely have the most interesting character of any horse that I've ever met. You always make us laugh. :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Don't forget to pick up your carrots and go to see the video that David made introducing you to his visitors. There's more on the video, but carrots are a prominent feature. :)

      Have a great week!

  9. Hi Suzanne,
I so enjoyed reading your chat! Scrabble is such a fun game... thankyou for reminding me of it. I haven't played in so long just because of being busy and forgetting about it, but I think I'll pull it out soon :)

How neat your Granny made apple butter! I always think it is such a neat thing to make preserves and jellies and things like that and always admire the women who do that like our Grandmothers :) I hope to someday.

Ooh, meatloaf! I definitely think that counts and it is always a delicious treat.

I hope you have a blessed day! Also, thankyou so very much for your lovely comment on my blog recently. It was a delight to read!

    Blessings to you♥

    1. Hi Jazzmin,

Thank you and you're welcome. I hope that you were able to get out your Scrabble game and play it. We have been playing it the last couple of days. The kids are really enjoying it. Of course, we bend the Scrabble rules, too. haha

What type of jam or jelly would you like to make first?

My husband agrees with you on the meatloaf. He loves it. :)

I hope that you've had a blessed week and that the one ahead is as well.
