Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 2013: #2

Today is the birthday of my favorite celebrity of all times. He died two days before I turned twelve. He would have been seventy-eight years old today. Happy birthday, Elvis!

QUESTIONS
What's your favorite thing to have in hot cocoa/ hot chocolate?

Marshmallows! Big or small, I don't care, though I prefer the big marshmallows.

Did you have a white Christmas? Have you had snow since then?

No. I'm in Gulf Coast Texas and snow is an extreme rarity here, though it did snow our very first Christmas here. That was way back in 2004.

Have you been looking over seed catalogs? If this doesn't apply, what kind of catalogs do you like to leaf through?

I'm waiting for the seed catalogs to get here. I haven't figured out how to have a garden in this totally shaded yard, but I would love to! I also love looking through yarn catalogs and dreaming about someday being able to knit the fancy patterns.

Gas stove or electric?

This house is plumbed for a gas stove but I feel safer with an electric stove, so that is what we have.

What's new or interesting?

The year?

Really, something interesting to me at the moment is alkaline-glazed pottery and its relevance to the history of both Edgefield County, South Carolina and Hart County, Georgia. One of my forefathers, Allen Gunter, originally from Edgefield County, was one of the men that introduced alkaline glazing to Northeast Georgia. I think that it would be an interesting thing to learn and carry on an important part of my family's history.

Have any of you ever had experience creating pottery? How did it go for you? Was it fun? Was it a smelly mess? Please let me know in the comment section.

  1. I remember when Elvis died. I had just graduated high school and was leaving on a camping trip with my brother when the news came over the radio.
I loved that little happy birthday video. I sent it to my daughter whose birthday it is in 2 days, and she thought it was crazy and hilarious! So did I!
My girlfriend used to do pottery years ago and then stopped, but often talks about how she misses it. I'm sure it's a bit messy but very rewarding!

Maybe you could send your friend my way so that she could share her pottery experience with me. I'd love to hear about it.
