A to Z Blogging Challenge: E is for Evelyn

Evelyn Fowler Gunter was my granny, my daddy's mama. She was a character. She didn't take anything off of anybody. She'd tell you straight up what she thought of something and was to the point about it. You never had to guess where you stood with Granny.

When I was a little girl, I was afraid of Granny. But, as I grew older, I understood where she was coming from. She had endured a lifetime of hurt and her gruff exterior was a protective wall, protecting her heart from further pain. Inside, she was just a lovable teddy bear. She'd give the shirt off of her own back if she thought you needed it. The more I really got to know her and know what she had been through, the easier it was to love her. I wasn't so scared of her anymore. She was one of my heroes.

I had Granny the longest of all of my grandparents. She died 25 March 2010, just shy of her eighty-ninth birthday. You can see her picture in the slide show that is in my sidebar.

  1. That was my great grandma's name. She was, too, a lil' firecracker. Didn't take anything from any one, but was a sweet soul at the same time. Great post!

    1. Thank you! Our female ancestors had to be tough to survive some of the things they were put through. I like that you referred to your great-grandma as a firecracker. That sums up my granny pretty good, too. :)

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. I am so sorry that I didn't see your comment until now, almost a year later! It makes me wonder what else Google isn't notifying me about.

      Have a great week!
