Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 24: #17

Please come on over to join us on Patrice's porch and don't forget to bring a carrot or two for Wendell!

QUESTIONS

How often do you wear a skirt or dress?

It has probably been at least seven years since I've worn one.

Did you feel unmotivated after Christmas and New Years?

Not really. Not any more than any other time of year. The motivation or lack thereof really depends on the subject at hand.

What was the last thing that made you say "Wow"?

The last thing that made me say "Wow!" would have to be when I found the death certificates of two of my great-great-grandmothers. I've been searching for *anything* that I could find on these two women for thirty years or so with absolutely no luck at all. Many of the brick walls that I've been up against with my research seem to be tumbling down. One lesson that I'm learning in all of this is that perseverance will go a long way in helping me to get the information that I need and want. Boy, do I have a lot more to say on that one!

Do you shop with a list, or do you "wing it"?

I guess that we do a bit of both. We write the list. We go to the store. We discover that we left the list at home. We go ahead and shop, hoping that we're remembering everything. We don't. We come back home and find that what we forgot most of what was on the list and decide that maybe we didn't need it so much after all. We try again next time.

I enjoyed this so much that I will ask this again. What questions would you like me to ask on our Chat?

Who in your family do you favor the most, either in regards to looks or personality?

  2. I used to not mind skirts or dresses but then I just got more comfortable in pants. I probably haven't worn a skirt or dress since the lovelies were little. I'm about to start a genealogy project- great find for your great-great grandmothers!

    1. I used to wear dresses all the time when I was a young teenager (which was one thing other kids picked on me about). There's just a lot more that you can do in pants without flashing to the world and they are more comfortable, to me, for that reason especially. It would probably just feel too weird to put on a dress/skirt after so long in pants. What do you think?

Thanks! I am very excited about my finds. I wish you the best of luck with your research. I'm no expert by any stretch (yet!), but if I can help, please let me know.

  3. I made a mini book on genealogy for my daughter for Christmas. It certainly took a lot of research, I spent hours and hours checking and rechecking, but I found a lot of great stuff--copies of my dad's enlistment in the Canadian army, the record of a great-greats marriage license. I had more fun working on this project than she will have enjoying the finished book.

    1. How cool that you were able to find the records of your dad's enlistment in the army and the marriage license of your great-greats. That is wonderful!

Maybe your daughter will surprise you and enjoy the book more than you can imagine. Personally, I think that it was a wonderful gift that you gave to her. :)

  4. Wow that is a long time to look. I am glad you found it. I remember when I found my grandmother and grandfathers wedding license. I was shocked when I found out they had to get married, because my Mom was on the way.
There are so many treasures like that when you start looking into your family.
It gets obsessive for me though. I can't stop and it is all I think about.

    1. I agree, a very long time...over half of my life so far. I think it works out to about 65% of my life so far, give or take. :)

How cool that you found your grandparents wedding license. Did it list on it that your grandma was expecting, or was it just a matter of you doing the math? I was thought to be on the way already, too, when my parents got married.

Yes, there are lots of treasures along the way that add to the excitement. I understand it becoming an obsession. It is very much one for me. Guilty I am. haha I go to sleep thinking about who I should search for next and where I might find them. And when I hit a glitch in my own research, I index records for FamilySearch.org. I was indexing draft registration cards in my dreams the other night, which I thought was hilarious. :)

How far have you gotten in your own research?

  5. Family history detective work is so exciting! I have spent many hours hunched over a microfiche reader squinting to make out the spidery handwriting on census forms.

    1. Do those microfiche/film machines make you dizzy, too? Back home at the library in South Carolina, I would sit there for hours scrolling through the old newspapers on microfiche/film. Sometimes I would move them so fast across the screen that I nearly fell out of my seat from getting dizzy. haha

Sometimes you go in looking for one person specifically and come out with ten more that you didn't even know to be looking for in the first place. I love productive days like that.

In regards to the census records...have you ever wished that they had a legible handwriting requirement for the census takers? Good grief, some of it in impossible to read!

  6. Wow, you're doing your family heirloom! This is so cool. I would really like to do this, but wouldn't know where to begin. I believe there are family members who keep a very good record of such stuff. One of my goals is to get up with them to get all the good digs on the family.
