Please head on over to Everyday Ruralty to join in the fun!

This week's questions:

Questions

1.Where is your favorite place to think, reflect, or pray?

To be totally honest, my favorite peaceful place is a cemetery. I could sit there for hours, but rarely have had the opportunity to nor would it be safe these days to go there alone.

2.Did you believe in Santa as a kid?

Yes! I also didn't particularly believe my mama when she explained "reality" to me. I remember waiting up, watching for Santa, just to see if she was telling me the truth or not. I also remember climbing around in that mile-high closet looking for presents. Sometimes, in a moment of wishful thinking, I still listen for him. :) This whole belief in Santa backfired for my husband and I. All of the other kids had a relatively calm reaction when the "facts" were shared with them. Not my baby girl. Even at sixteen, she's still mad because we had her believing there was a Santa when there wasn't. What's a parent to do? I do believe in being honest, but isn't believing in Santa a normal part of childhood?

3.What's your favorite kind of Christmas cookie? You can add a recipe if you have time.

I like sugar cookies, but I don't like them to be frosted. Sprinkles are okay but the frosting is usually too sweet.

4.Did you grow up around any of your grandparents?

Oh yes! I was blessed to grow up around all of my grandparents. We all lived in the same county and most of us in the same town. I spent time with all of them quite a bit throughout my childhood. I knew all of my paternal papa's siblings and my maternal grandma's older sister. I knew her middle sister's name, but can't recall ever going to see her. I only knew my maternal grandpa's sister. I think that his brothers were dead already by the time I came along. I knew the names of some of my paternal granny's siblings, but only remember going to the house of one of them on one occasion. One of her brothers I only knew through her. He died when he was just a little boy. He died of pneumonia when he was about two years old and my poor Granny was eaten up with guilt over his death. She had been playing outside with him under the porch and it had started to rain. I guess he got sick from getting wet and cold and then he got pneumonia. She felt like it was her fault for not taking him inside sooner. His name was Bobby.

5.What's your favorite winter sport-skiing, skating, sledding, other(?) ? If you are in a warm place, what is your favorite winter sport to watch when the Winter Olympics are televised?

I live on the Texas Gulf Coast which has to be one of the hottest places on the planet (well, it seems like it!). I love to watch figure skating. I wish that I could do that! Instead of looking graceful, though, I would be smacking the floor with my face and behind more often than not. :)

  1. I'm no figure skater but it's not that hard to do. I never worried about how "graceful" I looked - just concentrated on having fun.

  2. I've never been on ice skates before, just roller skates. My cousin told me the 'truth' about Santa and I was furious! But then I came to my senses and realized he way lying. LOL

I thought I was already following you but I wasn't! I am now though!

  3. I love your answers. My family wanted me to believe in Santa so bad, they had the best stories when I started to question it. Still makes me laugh. But Christmas never really seemed the same the few years after I stopped believing.
I don't like frosting on a cookie either.
    PS - I'm a new follower too.

  4. Ha, ha! I'm with you on the skating. I wish I could be that graceful, too. But isn't it wonderful to watch?
How wonderful to have had your grandparents so close.

You reminded me that I also like sugar cookies - unfrosted, definitely. That is way too much and I think makes them kind of too soft.

  5. @My Kid's Mom

I think that I would be so worried about staying upright that I wouldn't have fun at first. After I got used to it, though, I know I'd have a grand time ice-skating. I used to love roller skating. I never did master stopping without the aid of a carpeted wall, though. haha I'm glad that you had fun!

Thanks for commenting. I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas. :)

haha I thought that you were already following me, too. :) I've had that happen several times to me, being sure that I was following someone, but it apparently didn't "catch" when I clicked to follow. I'm glad that you're here now. Thanks!

Anyone that says there isn't a Santa Claus has to be lying, right? Did you pop him on the nose for telling you such a fib? I love hearing these childhood memories.

How often did you go roller skating? I used to go every Saturday morning when I was a young teen. I loved it!

  8. @Kim

Hi Kim. Thanks so much for being a new follower and for commenting. :)

It does seem to remove some of the magic of the season once we're given the "news", but we have to find a way to keep the spirit there by believing in the idea behind Christmas - love and kindness and the gift of eternal life. That's a pretty tall order for a little kid hoping for a houseful of goodies and realizing it isn't going to work out that way.

I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas!

  9. @Stephanie V

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Stephanie. Yes, it is wonderful to watch the ice skaters. It just seems to freeing to be able to glide across the ice like that and dance on the skate without breaking your neck. :)

I was very blessed to have my grandparents so close for as long as I did. I wish it could have worked out the same for my children, but it hasn't. We're a thousand miles away from my parents.

The frosting, to me, is usually way too sweet and, I agree, it makes them too soft. I like a little bit of crunch to the cookie.

I hope that you have a wonderful Christmas!
