Chats on the Farmhouse Porch 15: #8

Please head on over to Everyday Ruralty to join in the fun!

This week's questions:

Alison asks: What's the biggest obstacle you've overcome or need to?

Insecurity. I have always been an insecure person and, according to my husband, my own worst critic. I need to stop "stinkin' thinkin'", as Zig Ziglar calls it, to not allow it to enter my head.

Julia asks: If you won $100,000 what changes would you make?

We would pay off our car and make a downpayment on a house of our own. That is one of our dreams: to become homeowners once again.

McGuffy Ann asks: What's the most unusual pet you've had?

I was the oldest of four children, you take a guess? OK, OK, siblings aren't really pets (though I did think they were my own personal baby dolls!). I can't really think of any unusual pet that I've had. It has always been the basics: cats, dogs, hamsters, and fish.

When do you start decorating for Christmas?

We do any Christmas decorating on December 18. We have a child with a nearly-Christmas birthday and want her to have her day without it being overshadowed. We've done it this way for almost 21 years now. However, our tree is up year-round, just not decorated.

What's your favorite type of magazine to read?

I love to read photography, art, and writing magazines. Also, anything architectural, like This Old House, Fine Homebuilding, any houseplan magazines as well as home decor magazines.

  1. Wow, how do you keep your tree from getting dusty? I have always wondered that if it was up all year,
That is why I take my Christmas decorations because my sons birthday is the 28th of December and I wanted it to be about him.
    Nice Answers this week.

  2. I'm with you on the Christmas timing. I think I got the idea from my mother who may have been respecting my birthday, too. But I think it was more about having five kids hyped way too soon.

  3. I'm a December baby, as well, but I absolutely love the decorations and want them up. In fact, when I make my birthday cake & ice cream request each year I almost always ask for a chocolate/chocolate with peppermint ice cream. Yum-yum!

Hi! There's no keeping anything dust-free living in this area. I think it is the dust capitol of the world! No matter how much a person dusts, it comes right back. I'm not sure the cause of it unless it is because there is a coal plant just down the road from our house.

One of my uncles was born on Dec. 27 and another on Dec. 28, too. Does your son get short-changed by other folks because his birthday is just after Christmas? I hope not. Things are harder for December babies than for most people, I think, when it comes to birthdays.

Thank you for visiting and commenting. I hope that you have a great day!

Stephanie, I read your comment and realized that I have no clue when my mama started decorating for Christmas when I was a child. I do, however, remember climbing through the closet looking for the presents after I was told the reality of Santa's existence. :)

I got the idea of leaving the tree up all year long from my mother-in-law. Hers is up, maybe not all year, but for many months before Christmas. I know one year it was up in August and fully decorated. Mine is up, just not decorated.

So, Cathy, want to convert over to the "all year long" committee? We could use some more members. haha

Chocolate cake is one of my favorites, too. I usually have either a Black Forest cake or a standard chocolate cake for my birthday. I've never had peppermint ice cream before. It sounds interesting. :)

  7. I like Zig Ziglar too. Stinkin thinkin can be easy to have and hard to get rid of. Hubby and I like to listen to CDs by Ziglar, Rohn, and some of the others. I like that you let your daughter have a birthday separate from Christmas. All three of us kids have holiday birthdays. My two sisters have Thanksgiving and New Years. They always get lost in the shuffle!See you next week!

Thanks so much for stopping by, Patrice, and for your comments.

Wow, all of you having holiday birthdays must have made it difficult to maintain the big deal that a birthday should be. My December daughter is my only near-big-holiday baby.

I think that Zig (I usually call him "Ziggy, baby!" haha) is great! I feel so good listening to him talk. I know that if anyone could help me over the stinkin' thinkin', it would be him. The only other person that ever came anywhere close was my late father-in-law. I'm glad that you enjoy listening to Zig, too. :)

I hope that you have a great week. Thanks for letting us visit on your porch. :)
